Minor point: Which do we all prefer? Luke saying “go away” as he heads toward the hut, as in the theatrical, or leaving the line out as the deleted scene version does?

Nah, leave it out. It makes him sound childish.

That’s very nice! It deftly avoids RJ’s double/triple/whatever fakeout while infusing a meaningful sense of emotion. Instantly sold. Do you already have it in full 5.1? If not, I should be able to recreate it.

Ha, I’m glad you like it!

I do not have it in 5.1 at the moment. I used the center channel of the 5.1 to grab the dialogue (mostly just Rey breathing) and added music from the Torn Apart track from TFA, but I’m not actually sure the best way to go about making the new music 5.1 with proper reverb. Any ideas? Should I send you my edits for reference so you can recreate it?

That’d probably be handy. I oughtta be able to do a reasonably close approximation.
Did you alter the speed of any shots?

No I didn’t alter the speed so you should have no problem matching it to the frame. I’ll send you the QuickTime with some audio references!

Author

Missa like it. The fade in of the new track could be a little bit tweaked but it’s good.

Really well done, that 😃

Yasss! Great work, Hal! I’m so happy this will be a part of your version, and I just love the way people collaborate here!

My only questions / suggestions:

  1. At 0:25, I put a slight zoom on the closeup of Kylo (100 to 105%) that for me helped match the camera motion of the shots before and after.
  2. I rode the levels of the Torn Apart music a little, starting it soft and only letting it reach full volume for the last couple of seconds. I defer to your judgment of how it sounds in the full mix, but thought I’d mention it!

Yes, thank you I am aware of both of those things. I haven’t given up on the saddle zoom, but I did not have time to implement it yet without screwing up the widescreen matte.
It’s such a joy to work on this project in this community. Thanks to everybody.

Wow, that is even an improvement in the original edit. Very eloquent. This edit is getting polished so nicely!

I take the liberty to sum up the current state of the edit one week after the previous sum up (that way people joining forces know what’s currently going on):

Work in progress changes (to be implemented):

  • Apply DrDre’s LUT to the complete movie
  • Rescore the Luke deleted scene with Torn Apart
  • Trim even further the heavy, direct hinting before Snoke’s death (add Torn Apart strings)
  • Trim the ladder sequence with Rose’s sister
  • Removing Snoke berating Hux at the end of the opening battle

Changes considered but not decided yet:

  • Sir Ridley’s enhanced Yoda puppetry (postponed to a v2 next year ?)
  • Remove the captain obvious scene of the “we’re taking heavy loses”
  • Remove Poe’s “big ass door”
  • Rework Rose and Finn meeting (maybe put back the cut portions, or cutting more)

Things that WON’T be altered in this edit (but Darthrush is changing all of that in his edit for those who wish something more radical):

  • Luke tossing the saber
  • Leia using the Force
  • Maz caméo
  • Luke milking the female alien
  • Luke making PT references
  • The ending with the broom kid

Changes already implemented (see workprint#2):

  • Trimmed the opening ‘prank call’ joke to prevent it from venturing into SNL territory while retaining the core of the humor
  • Reinstated the ‘Luke Has a Moment’ deleted scene
  • Reinstated the deleted scene where Poe gives Finn back his jacket (with scene transition provided by OT.com user pleasehello)
  • At their first meeting, removed Finn telling Rose to breathe
  • Removed Rose repeating, “They can track us through lightspeed.“
  • Removed both appearances from the ‘Caretakers’ on Ach-to (with a visual effects shot courtesy of OT.com user snooker)
  • Trimmed away the lone porg who gives Chewie the doughy eyes, though leaving the joke intact otherwise
  • Removed Luke’s line to R2, “Nothing can make me change my mind.”
  • Cut down the first sequence at Canto Bight to focus solely on finding the master codebreaker (also removing sounds of coins rattling around inside BB8 in two shots)
  • Blended the original Anakin lightsaber ignition sound with the existing different sounds for two shots
  • Made it appear as though Finn and Rose follow DJ out of the cell, briefly elude the guards, and the scene ends. Next time we see the trio, they are already in hyperspace (also removing the implication in the later scene that BB8 helped steal the ship).
  • Removed Rey asking Kylo Ren is he has a cowl to put on
  • Added a center wipe transition from the scene with Finn, Rose, and DJ in hyperspace to the fleet losing their medical frigate
  • Used a few shots from a deleted scene to remove the iron/spaceship gag, which borrowed from an old spoof which laughed at Star Wars rather than along with Star Wars
  • Trimmed some of the comedy with BB8 being placed under a basket
  • Removed the detail from Kylo Ren that Rey’s parents are buried in the Jakku desert, as this seems at odds with the vision we saw in The Force Awakens.
  • Moved the scene with Luke and Yoda to immediately prior to Leia looking out over Crait (using audio and video provided by OT.com user Darthrush)
  • Removed Finn’s line about the battering ram canon being “old Death Star tech.”
  • The crate Luke sits on as he talks with Leia is now stationary and motionless, unaffected by him (effect provided by OT.com user poppasketti)
Removed Rey’s triple-TIE combo shot, with the Falcon’s involvement in the battle being first revealed with its shadow swee- ping by and a single TIE being shot down
  • Trimmed Hux ordering fighters to follow the Falcon, leaving this poor tactical move to be attributed to Kylo Ren’s emotional priorities
  • Removed Finn’s line, “Oh, they hate that ship!”
  • Abbreviated Finn’s suicide run, so that the audience hasn’t had enough time to accept it and get totally on board with it (toward the end of a film that relishes jerking its audience around)
  • After Rose saves Finn, removed her line about not “fighting what we hate” and “saving what we love.”
  • Snuck in a Wilhelm scream… somewhere in the movie.

  • Removing Snoke berating Hux at the end of the opening battle

I can get behind that. Not for just Hux’s sake, but for Snoke too. Snoke is an older, wiser leader who would not berate is generals in front of his “underlings.”

Think about those under Hux’s command. It would be terrible for moral if the men/women under Hux’s command to loose respect, or not take him seriously, if hux was pretty much spanked in front of them in a humiliating way.

For Snoke, it takes away from his character. I don’t see Snoke reflecting their personality of a Trump-like personality to be honest. (Not being political in any way, just based on personality and power position)

Heck, Snoke didn’t make a big fuss when starkiller base was destroyed.

I say this in respect to how Snoke presents himself in the open. Of course behind closed doors with his high position commanders/generals he would not hold back on them since they are in his “inner circle.”

By doing this to Hux, it cuts down on him personally. Yes he is Nazi-like and he should be cut down a peg or too. But that scene is just not necessary. The opening dialogue/scene with Poe and Hux has a perfect balance that does not demean Hux.

So personally I see two options. The first would be what Darth Rush did is ending the scene after the rebels make the jump with Hux look of panic and disbelief.

As an alternate to that idea, add the dialogue of the FO officer saying her line about Snoke hailing Hux and end on Hux’s expression.

Both those work but the alternate Segways nicely on the next time you see Hux he is with Snoke.

I’ll have to sit down and see which works better.

In other news I can’t get the musical transitions to sound good to my ears while working on removing Paige kicking the ladder more than three times. It’s such a little thing, and I don’t really mind it, so I’m afraid this’ll be one to leave as it in the end.

I think that things are shaping up nicely for fanedit options of episode 8. I kind of see it as Hal’s edit being the conservative cut. It retains the same movie, but polished and trimmed up to make for an overall better experience. Mine is a more radical cut but still retains the same story. And DigiMod’s edit is for those who want to see an entire story restructure.

It is great to see the community band together and create all these options for people to see Episode 8 in an fanedited form.

I’m not able to do better with this idea than Darthrush, so consider his clip my candidate clip as well:

Per the suggestion of many to revisit my removal of Snoke throwing Hux around after the Resistance escapes, here is a new clip which restores one more line of dialogue before we cut back to the Resistance.

I must say that I really like how this flows after getting used to it. I tried including one more shot of Hux at the end but it just didn’t fit.

^ That’s great! I’m also glad to see “Hux as a floor mop” go. I haven’t seen TLJ after the cinema so watching these upcoming edits with fresh eyes just might do the trick (sway me to the “Hey, I really like this movie!” column).

Also, in order to reinstate the shot of Finn’s speeder’s guns from melting, I would have to reinstate the majority of the part of the sequence which was cut. Therefore, the lack of gun melting is going to have to be part of the package, weighed as such.

All good! It’s not the biggest of deals; I was just partial to it. If I didn’t know it was there I wouldn’t miss it!

Hal, I wanted to give a suggestion in regards to the ladder kicking…

I tried this out and it works perfectly. So she does her first two kicks and then it cuts to an aerial shot of the ship. After her first kick, there is an shot looking up at the remote. If you cut to the aerial shot right from there, and just do a simple crossfade, then it is a seamless cut. And it gets rid of one extra kick which is nice!

Excellent take ! Is there a possibility to end the transition to the rebel fleet with a close up on Hux ? (I need to rewatch the original version to see if such shot exists). Anyway, this clips already is perfect.

I’ve added to the sum up list the kicking ladder alteration, according to Hal it might not be feasible but Darthrush has brought another idea, so until the alteration is fully dismissed it’s on the list.

One last thing: Hal, the crawl stays as it is, right ?

Author

Mala, I couldn’t find a suitable shot. There is kind of an medium shot of Hux where he makes an odd expression with turning his eyes and it just looks awkward so the above clip is as good as it gets.

I’ll have to post a clip in the morning for what I mean with the ladder kicks. Removing the second kick is completely seamless though and you can’t even tell a difference at first.
