Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers ** — Page 93

I mean, in a universe where there are a ton of different alien species, Lando of all people being open to all of it makes a lot of sense.

Unless this is part of the story it’s all just pre-release clickbait though.

^ a shame that, was looking forward to seeing them on screen - though like Colin Cantwell says, hope it is in a ‘Directors Cut’ or deleted scenes etc

Just seen a preview.
I liked it! After a dodgy first few scenes, it becomes entertaining, the acting’s pretty good, (especially Paul Bettany) the script is ok too. Way exceeded my expectations.

That cameo though. Not only is it chronologically nuts, but it’s a totally avoidable self-own by the studio after 2 hours of a solid movie.

Why must everything be so slavishly canon, even to the detriment of the audience’s experience?

That aside, 4 stars I’d say.

If what I’ve stumbled upon (and assumed was BS trolling) is that same cameo, it far outweighs Ponda Boba in Rogue One for completely unnecessary.

It is a plot point in “Last Shot” novel (Han and Lando). He and a Twi’lek.

Plus, supposedly Lando is pretty flirty with Han in the movie.

It’s already out here in the Philippines. I went in with realistic expectations, and was pleasantly surprised to find it the best of the Disney SW flicks so far.

It’s well-written, and pulls off a decent job of giving more depth to Han’s character. It’s quite light and a lot of fun, too, much the same as A New Hope.

I recommend it for anyone on the fence about this film–especially for those disappointed by The Last Jedi.

I saw the movie in a preview screening and… I actually liked it! ^_^

First thing out of the way: Harrison Ford is irreplacable as Han Solo, no matter wether you agree with the casting choice or not. Given the impossibility of the task, the actor did a formidable job and there were a few scenes where he managed to get close.

Oddly enough, more distracting to me were the famous actors I knew from other appearances. They are all great, but just having them in there threw me out of immersion quite a few times. Especially Woody Harrelson stuck out to me like a sore thumb.

The most prominent character who really works is Chewbacca. Second to that you have an excellent Lando, who really is spot on in his portrayal.

The whole “Lando is a robo-sexual” thing is just blown out of proportions SWJ clickbait. What is shown in the movie could be seen that way, but is by far open to interpretation - even if you have read that dumb article and are forced to look at it through that lens. Lando just cares about his droid, much like Luke treated 3PO and R2 as equals instead of underlings.

The writing is fun and doesn’t do any over the top universe rewriting.

Other than that it has great alien creatures and what stood out for me: Droids! Lots of very cool banged up customized droids. Stuff like this really helped to root it in the StarWars universe.

Over all things have more of a used look, except for the Falcon which really is just so squeaky clean not because it’s brandnew but because it’s Lando’s ship who is all about style. You can almost imagine him looking for a different parking spot not to get a ding in the pristine paint job.

All in all it’s a fun little space heist adventure with Han, Chewie and Lando. And that is all it had to be.

Right now, I have to say this is (unexpectedly) my favourite post Lucas era StarWars film.

While watching Solo, did any of you get the Portal 2 reference?
In Solo that robot tells Han and the others to turn around while she is breaking the gate, in Portal 2 the robot Wheatley tells Chell (the player) to turn around while he “HACKS” breaks the door in the turret manufacturing place.

Pretty nice for Alden to get such an open show of support. Ford still seems more engaged in Star Wars than he ever was in decades past, even not being in the film. If the creator of the character is on board with Alden and feels the torch has been passed, who am I to argue?

I love how the 80+ years old Han is much taller than the 20 years old one. He grew a lot obviously.

One thing that I can already assess: I hate all the Solo posters. Any of them.

VERY relieved to read your post. These days you never really know how to take reviews online. Will be seeing ASAP.

Thanks

Just back from a surprisingly poorly attended showing here in the UK. Overall really enjoyed it, the second half of the movie is probably where it really hits it’s stride. Alden Ehrenreich does an excellent job with the nearly impossible task of following following Harrison Ford, there are a number of times he completely captures the personality of Han with feeling like he is trying to be Harrison Ford. Donald Glover is almost perfect as Lando. The plot is pitched just right with enough action to keep you interested but is a small enough story to not make Han’s, Chewie’s and Lando’s adventures in the existing films feel underwhelming in retrospect. Quite a few folks have wondered how the pristine Falcon was going to end up in the state we see it in the OT and it is answered sensibly and believably.

On the negative side I think this probably has the weakest musical score of the movies so far. The soundtrack seems almost invisible at times and doesn’t seem to drive your emotions in line with the scene in the same way Williams does, which is a bit of a shame. Maybe after a second viewing I’ll change my mind.

The cameo of a certain prequel character actually works quite well and I didn’t really get the normal “it’s a small universe after all” feeling that these things can sometimes create.

There is a nice “han shot first” nod as well, and this could nicely tees up potential sequels if it makes enough money for Disney’s liking.

After a first viewing 7/10.

Now that we know Enfys Nest is a woman, do we think there’s going to be some kind of big casting surprise? The only actress on the IMDB cast without a character listed is Lily Newmark, who seems to be far too young, so I have to think it’s someone else.

I was so close to calling it. It was sitting right in front of me, damn it.

So what did people catch in terms of EU references? The film was chock full. I counted a reference to possibly each of the Smith Lando novels (mentions of Oseon, a “Starcave,” and being inside a temple which I can only assume is a nod to the first book), yet I didn’t notice any reference to the Daley books, oddly enough. Beckett killed Aurra Sing apparently. There were a few other good ones I’m forgetting.

The Maul thing is dumb, though chronologically it makes sense. We don’t know what he was up to before his Rebels appearances.

As for Lando being pansexual: the situation makes sense now. I can see why Jon Kasdan and Glover would see it that way (and it is supported by the film itself), and I can see why Disney/LFL haven’t said anything (because it’s small and not a big deal and making a big deal of it would just get everyone mad, which I guess has happened anyway).

Couple other EU things I noticed were the imperial academy on Carida and the Teras Kasi fighting style.

Lots of great EU references, but no great film moments. The absolute worst Star Wars film since the animated Clone Wars. This one makes TPM and AOTC look like masterpieces. I was literally sick to my stomach at the end of the film, sitting in complete shock and silence at how offensively BAD This was. This movie spoon fed me information I already know and don’t care about. Like a Mike or Rich of Red Letter Media freakout the whole time: “THIS IS STARRRR WARRRS. WANNA SEE THE KESSEL RUN? THIS IS IT!!!” I rate it 3/10 only because Donald Glover was awesome as Lando. I hated everything else about this film.

Hahaha, hey I like those movies, but they aren’t exactly cinematic gold. but compared to this film, they are Citizen Kane.
