Which VHS Trilogy should I get to replace my 1995 'Faces' set?

Well, my vcr decided that my RotJ Faces VHS was delicious, so I’m looking to replace it. With VHS tapes so cheap though, I thought it might be worth investing in a different set if it was generally accepted to be “better”.

Any suggestions or personal preferences? I just like the VHS feel to the films. Something about the lower resolution just blends the effects that much better in my opinion.

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

Thanks 😃

I picked up Ep 1 and 2 on VHS today, I’ll keep an eye out for that set of the OT.

Does anyone here know - does the Japanese VHS of Revenge of the Sith have English audio? Seems to be a hard find, but seems the only way to finish off an NTSC set.

I’m pretty used to Faces, but definitely the odd point is “there’s sand people, I can see one now” with none in sight.

^ nightstalkerpoet - Video Collector may be able to help you with that one mate 😃

Love that box JawsTDS 😃

I have an old '95 THX full screen set, like this:-

To be honest I’ve forgot all about the differing quality of each sets - and just look for how cool the art/covers were for each set (and also how cheap a set is too 😉)

Love looking through sites with the differing sets on - like Video Collector’s quality http://www.swonvideo.com/

Though keep on promising myself one day I’ll get this (just for the weird, yet cool box 😃):-

I just watched The Empire Strikes Back from the 95 vhs fullscreen set last night and noticed that in the asteroid chase scene , the T.I.E. Fighter lasers are blue instead of green ! also,on the cover of the VHS box , the word trilogy between Star and Wars looks a lot like the modern logo they use for the sequel trilogy

I know this is going to be controversial, but I HIGHLY recommend the 1997 SE Limited Edition Collectors Set if you happen upon it at Goodwill or something. The '92 set is supremely badass as well. The Phantom Menace widescreen set is pretty cool too, with a strip of 35mm film like the '97 set and a concept art book.

Luke astro-projects himself to Salt Lake Planet, gets shot at by gorilla walkers, has a non-lightsaber duel with Darth Millennial, then dies of a broken heart, inspiring broom boys throughout the galaxy to get creative with their sweeping. - DuracellEnergizer

I’ve been looking for an excuse to justify my absurd Star Wars home media collection! Haha.

There’s a huge assortment of options you can choose from. My personal favourite for both aesthetics and quality are the '94 UK Widescreen releases. Great quality and the artwork is to die for.

Excuse the crappy photo on my bar, but I was watching it earlier today, so here’s my copy of ESB under the aforementioned banner:

does the Japanese VHS of Revenge of the Sith have English audio?

Don’t count on it. I’ve only got the Australian and UK copies of ROTS on VHS, but I have several copies of TPM and AOTC from non-English speaking regions on VHS and they’re all dubbed in another language.

Get a PAL or Region Free VCR, you’ll be better for it 😉

I highly recommend the 2000 reissue if you’re interested in the SE on VHS. It’s a much nicer, cleaner box in my opinion, plus you get some extra bonus features on there. Video Collector has all this on his site if you’re interested.

As Jason mentioned, Video Collector is seriously a great resource for this sort of thing. I’ve got a massive collection but it doesn’t even compare to his, and the amount of work he’s put into cataloguing it all is amazing. His site has helped me out numerous times. His VHS section is insane.

speaking of comprehensive home video collections , this guy literally wrote a book on it and has just about every release of the films on every format in multiple countries , from super 8 to beta to laserdisc, ced and far beyond …the collection sits in the background on his shelves and is drool worthy…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow8AJdgZTAg&list=PLjlPnivr6wGhIimehcIbKm3dhIXTBPpsu

If you’re still after the Executor VHS tin box set there is one available in the US for $35 on ‘Buy It Now’ (plus whatever p&p there is; described as ‘like new’ - with the tapes themselves seemingly still sealed):-

^ It is indeed a beautiful set.

I have all of the theatrical version vhs tapes (both cbs fox sets, and the last official set), and I recommend the set from the nineties (theatrical). I got it for 8 bucks. I probably paid thirty dollars for all nine of my theatrical vhs tapes. I also have Harmy’s and the official versions with the GOUT, too. Again, I’d recommend getting the THX theatrical versions. They’re cheap and look great. I believe the RotJ has Yoda on the cover.

The VHS set I have is the 1992 Fox Video set.

This is the one I’d recommend. It looks and sounds the best. You can usually find them for $8-$10, or maybe cheaper at a pawn/thrift store.
