Hahahaha what? No.

Hahahaha what? No.
Oh ok
He wasn’t screening it anyway, just talking about the techniques he used in restoring it.
Oh, he wasn’t? Yeah, so this event is even less Star Wars related than I thought. I honestly would be surprised if the home video rights to Star Wars were even mentioned at this event.
The Person in Question
Do you remember, when Disney requested a print of the original cut from Library of Congress why would they ask for it if they say “oh we don’t care about the OUT” so clearly something is happening is not why ask for the print. Here is a quote from reddit:
“For those unaware, the only thing Disney didn’t get when they bought Lucas Films back in 2012 was distribution rights to Episode 4. According to insiders, Disney has a 4k copy of the original cut of the film but can not release it. Now that Disney has bought all of 20th Century Fox, they now have full control of that movie and can release it to the public.”
Disney has all of the original elements for the 1977 Star Wars and has scanned all of the elements in 4K for archival purposes.
They would have absolutely no need of a LoC print, do you have a source for this?
Lucasfilm did at one stage try to retrieve the LoC prints and replace them with the Special Editions, the LoC refused.
Also when making the SE release, Lucas did dig out an IB Tech print and showed it to the colourists as reference for the SE, saying that the IB was the look he wanted to achieve. I’m wondering if these events may have gotten confused into the “Disney requested a print” story, as I can’t see a reason that Disney would need one.
I’m not saying the story is definitely wrong, but I’d be interested to know what the source is.
I’ve spoken again with people inside the Disney archival and restoration team, and they still say there is no interest internally in releasing the original versions, but that they have digitally scanned all of the elements that they have. There is talk internally of a 4K SE release however.

I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.

The source is a Lowry restorationist whose friend, an LoC librarian, complied with Disney’s request.

Lowry Digital Images hasn’t existed for ages now, since 2010 I think?
I do know that Disney did get a print when making Rogue One, they wanted it as reference to make sure they matched the look of the original Star Wars. It may have come from the LoC.
If the request was more recent than Rogue One, it might be for some other purpose though, which would be interesting.

This story made the rounds before RO was released. Makes sense then. Though it’s hard to believe Lucasfilm doesn’t have prints on hand or something else better quality than the copyright deposit.

Lucasfilm does have a 4K restoration of the SE, and tons of elements, but they had to send out for an IB print back in 1997 as well, so they may not have one in house, and all the others have faded to pink.

The concern for matching the style of the original is perplexing. Why not match the release versions?
I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.
I think it was the Director, I remember an interview where he talked about wanting it to look like the 1977 film, I think with the SE having the additions that look decidedly 90s, they wanted to get back closer to the original design and look of Star Wars. Or he just really wanted to watch the original on film and had the perfect excuse!

It seems everyone who makes movies at Lucasfilm thinks the originals should be released. Abrams and Rian are both on transcript or Twitter defending the originals or trashing the SEs. Is it really just organizational respect for George holding it back?

That is really sad news
mverta hasn’t logged in here for near-on a year - his last post here was two years ago - and there has been no news of this for a good while too.
Until mverta returns - or there is a development re Legacy - this thread will remain locked (edit: now unlocked…)

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

Recently, Lance Maurer, CEO of Cinnafilm, invited me to speak at a presentation of cutting-edge film restoration techniques. He has been a supporter and advocate of the Legacy project for many years, and has done much to try and use his industry connections to get presentation time for the project. We’ve set up such meetings before, but they’ve been canceled by attendees for various reasons.
This time however, we knew that in attendance would be appropriate people from Fox and Disney, as well as a who’s who of film restoration technologies; Technical Academy Award winners; ILM/Lucasfilm, members of the Visual Effects Society, etc. Legacy is based on several new techniques and technologies, so this seemed like just the right, brutal, impossible-to-please audience of experts to screen the results to. If there was really something unique to the process, these people would know it, and would talk about it.
In the end, Disney and Fox approached me about a number of options, ranging from restoring other marquee films to licensing exclusively my process and tools, and I was similarly asked about a variety of ideas by other studios/agencies. I also got a really interesting rundown by one of the guys who actually mastered the Star Wars Blu-Ray, who was funny and sympathetic, despite the fact that part of the presentation included handing the Blu-Ray its ass.
In the end, what wheels there are are in motion. The film’s future is fraught with a multitude of issues, but getting Star Wars is why Disney’s trying to buy Fox in the first place, and they are interested in revitalizing/remonentizing all their assets for their soon-to-be-launched streaming service.
It is always fun to be able to show people shots from the film and say without exaggeration or hyperbole that they’ve never been seen at that quality before. Not in theaters in 1977, and in no home release since. It’s pretty obvious looking at it, but hearing gasps from industry veterans, some of whom worked on the original film, makes the whole tiresome journey worth it. I am encouraged by the attention the presentation has gotten the project, and have been asked to present again at several upcoming venues. Mostly, I’ve said I’m happy to consider restoring other films so long as Star Wars is in the deal. Discussions are happening/emails are being exchanged. It is an important step; I suspect many to go yet. But one never knows. I will try to have one of the upcoming shows filmed so you guys can see what goes down.
More to come.
Best,
_Mike

This is awesome news - congratulations on the great response!
I’m local but didn’t learn about the presentation until after it happened. If there are any more in LA that are open to the public (as the Cinnafilm one seemed to be?), I’d love to attend.
Glad to hear that there’s progress on this! We can make as many projects as we want on this site, but nothing compares to an official release of the original film.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
Episode 9 Rewrite, The Starlight Project (Released!) and ANH Technicolor Project (Released!)
Congratulations on getting an attentive audience, Mike!
I can only hope all goes well for this getting future recognition, and a possible release.
This is fantastic news!!!
Congratulations Mike on a great show, great monetization options for your proprietary process, and for Star Wars and all that happened in that regard.
Well done sir.
Good luck with all yet to come.
Thank you for the update.

So glad to hear this is still alive!
Holy Santa Claus shit.

Congratulations!
What a wonderful update. We wish Star Wars Legacy (and you) the very best of good fortune!
