Higher end audio cards can capture at 96khz which seems ideal for vinyl, even if you convert it down to 44.1khz for CD it should sound better than capturing at 44.1khz.

Seems I signed up too late to the newsletter, could someone forward the first news piece to i@dontcare.org ? thanks.

Well, that's the real trick, isn't it? And it's going to cost you something extra. Ten, I mean seven thousand, all in advance. Just kidding. Couldn't resist that one.

Well, I have been in contact with someone who sells X9 and X0 Players, but I don't think that is of much good though. You probably already know them. They live in Japan and said it would be $5,000 U.S. for one without the packaging and $6,000.00 with packaging. Shipping alone would be $700.00. They can also have it looked at by Pioneer's Facility to make sure nothing is wrong with the unit and replace any parts that need it for $1000.00. They said they could get a unit to me or anyone else for $7000.00 U.S.

If you guys receive $100.00 donations from 70 people, it could happen.

I'm going to do some more checking around. I have some friends scattered around the States and Japan who were LD aficionados and never cared much for DVD when it came along. Maybe one of them can point me in the direction of one that could at least be used for your purposes. I know Japan wouldn't be of much help because the shipping, but maybe someone Stateside could help.

I know it is a longshot, but I'll keep you posted on that.

just read the newsletter and i was compelled to say how amazed i was by what you guys have done...im in total aww.

on a somewhat related note, do you think at some point you guys could either write a nice how to, or point us to a good guide on writing these kinds of scripts for programs like avisynth (i know, videohelp and doom9 probably have all ill ever need). I have the programming knowledge (at least i think i do) i just dont have the video knowledge to acompany it to do the kind of things you guys are doing.

Nevermind on the newsletter request, my proper one turned up.

Amazing work on the stars! are you willing to share the AviSynth scripts? also on an inverse related note, does anyone have any scripts/filters that can remove 'stars'? A few of my laserdiscs have rotted and they're extremely difficult to find replacements of, I had a go at filtering out the rot dots/dashes but couldn't do very well:

Wow ... this is just amazing ... and I second Doctor M's question: "Wouldn't the process in theory allow you to improve the quality of the whole movie's capture?"

Great read guys, I read this before going to work something to make my friday interesting

Just a quick question as i'm a mac user and use Shake any chance you could give some pointers in constructing a similar script.

Citizen, if your problem Laserdiscs are all really old titles with analog soundtracks, the older top loading players cope with laser rot much better than most models made later on. (I have some discs that are virtually unwatchable on my 1704.) Finding one that works is the tricky part though!

Where were you in '77?

Citizen, you could try the AviSynth filters DeSpot or DeScratch. With careful tuning of the parameters you should be able to sucessfully remove most of the defects.

I used DeScratch on my capture to remove the occasional single line dropout with good results.

Thanks for the newletter lads

I take it using PAL discs would not give much extra to the quality of the starfiields either? - great work with what you've done - I wonder how many other tricks and surprised you have in store for us...

Am looking forward to your next issue

Re- getting another XO Player - would it be worth putting a sticky topic up asking if anyone has any info or sourcesas to whether they may know of one? Maybe putting it up at other SW/LD/DVD restoration sites etc too?

I too would love a copy of the newsletter (I signed up this morning, but it's probably too late for the distribution). brimley1138 (at) yahoo.com

Edit: Should have refreshed before I posted this! Thanks for the re-send, Zion!

I got the newsletter. I've seen only one other project to try to recreate the stars this one. Although, he went through and, repainted the stars. I think that the X0 result is a lot better(though, it's hard to tell becuase, he doesn't have a bigger picture.). Overall, great work http://graphics.gaiaonline.com/images/template/smiles/icon_3nodding.gif. Good luck getting the whole project together and, completed.

Awesome work guys, great read. At 1st I was really jealous of the Legacy Edition and not releasing it to the masses, but am now completely over it and can't wait till your release. Will donate soon (once the funds come in ). Keep up the great work.

I have found a two Pioneer HLD-X0's in Japan. One is under $2400.00 U.S. and the other is under $3200.00 U.S. That is an awesome deal. I wish I had the money. If anyone is interested, I can provide a link. I'm trying to do some translating to see what is what. From what I can make out, they are selling it for 12 more hours before they give up and give it to a friend.

The one for $3200.00 still has over 4 days left.

Ahh, finally got my newsletter!

We will share the code when we get it to the point we are 100% happy with it. (Or 95% anyway)
I'm still developing it in Shake, and then the other guys are doing it in AVISynth, we will end up trying to get the two code bases synchronised to get the same effect, or at least as close as possible. At that point we will release the scripts to the masses for use in whatever.

It is fun inventing new ways of processing images for the project, it is throwing up challenges that I don't really get in my day job - restoration is a different kettle of fish to production, but the required skills are similar I guess.
So the stuff we are developing here will probably end up being useful in some form in production anyway.
The starfield thing was one of those 2am ideas that we weren't sure would fly, and it was immensely satisfying when the stars popped back into existence after the first code run!
