per a suggestion on the blu-ray.com forums, I turned off 24p output on the BD player. Now it works.

That you have to turn that off is ridiculous in the first place. They probably instituted some new copy protection scheme that isn’t compatible with older players.

Probably. But what doesn’t make sense to me is that 24p settings have anything to do with copy protection schemes.

It kinda/sorta makes sense.

I had the exact same problem on my sony S5200 player as well. I picked up the 4k combo thursday morning at best buy on my way into work. I don’t have any 4k gear, but I’ve been future-proofing the physical media purchases whenever possible. In any event, that part is irrelevant since this issue has also been affecting people who only bought the regular blu. It’s the exact same bd whether it comes with a dvd or a uhd.

Anyway, finally got home late that night, unwrapped the plastic, threw the blu-ray into the player, saw what I assumed to be the background for the language select screen Disney always loves showing us first on all their titles and … the languages didn’t appear. Worse, my player completely locked up and I had to unplug the power just so I could start over. It randomly worked the second time, and I watched the movie all the way through (my first viewing since catching a 12:45 AM screening at the Uptown here in DC back on that first Thursday night in December!) before starting the audio commentary and getting a few scenes in before passing out. When I tried it again the next day it froze up again forcing me to unplug the power, and kept doing so even after nearly a dozen attempts. I have no idea why it randomly worked the second time the night before.

I tried messing with some of the player’s other settings. It should go without saying I made sure the firmware was up to date. I swear this is the very first disc I’ve had any problems with since getting the player three years ago. Finally I tried turning off 24p as suggested on the blu-ray.com forums, and the disc loaded successfully.

My theory?

This new breed of DRM that Disney put on the disc is finding something suspicious about the hardware chain in the player and thinks something on the other end of the hdmi connection might be trying to capture the native 24p signal coming off the disc. That’s why switching to 60p gets the disc working, because the DRM doesn’t care as much (I guess?) about the hdmi signal being captured on the other end if it’s had 3:2 pulldown applied to it and is no longer the pure 24p source itself.

You’d think they’d test this stuff out on some older players before inflicting it on innocent consumers who just want to watch the movie they paid for the way it was meant to be seen.

The only Blu-ray problems with menus I’ve ever had are those discs that want to connect to an online service after you select the first option and it crashes. Had to just turn off the auto-connect settings and deny it when asked.

Do they even have any of that BD live stuff anymore?

Not really surprising, but worth a mention…

You know what doesn’t suck about Canto Bight? The music.

Also other stuff.

Such as? I mean I liked the last jedi alot and i even liked Rose and Finn, but I hated the whole Canto sequence except DJ. It takes the whole movie to a grinding halt and the only real purpose it serves the story is to get all the characters into an even worse situation. Granted it is nice to have more of Finn and Rose bonding, and without the sequence there isn’t enough of that, but that doesn’t excuse the (IMHO of course) poor quality of it. But I’m legitimately curious to hear what you like about it, because I love the film as a whole and would love a different perspective to consider while watching it when I get to this scene to excuse it in my mind while watching.

Yes I like DJ and I like Finn and Rose. Seems you answered your own question, but if you don’t think that’s enough then ok.

This may be of some interest to you for consideration mate - https://i.redd.it/lrjogkba1c701.jpg

It has been posted before - so apologies if you’ve already seen it. Whilst I think some of the Canto Bight scenes could have been done better… I think it’s an important part of how Finn comes to commit to the Resistance (culminating in his ‘Rebel Scum’ line to Phasma) - where previously in the film he’s really just looking out for his friend.

Just my two penneth on it.

Is it a bad thing I kind of wish Finn and Rose’s roles were reversed in the film? Rose loses Morale over the death of her sister, while Canto Blight gives her reason to fight again.

^ Yes, a terrible thing! 😉 An intriguing idea, that.

On the same line of thought, one thing one of my casual star wars watching friends noticed is that to them Rey felt more like she was a supporting character for Luke and Kylo’s stories, rather than the lead character she was touted to be in TFA, and I can’t say I disagree. Now, as a director I can’t say my own ideas would be any better than RJ’s, but my idea to fix it would’ve been to at least give Rey her own plot point in having little to no control over the force. Like her force abilities are growing faster than she is able to keep them in check.

I feel doing that, it’d change the dynamic of Luke and Rey’s lessons, with Rey growing more frustrated that Luke is focusing more on telling her why the Jedi were bad than actually helping her with her problems. It’d also give Rey a reason to turn to Kylo for help, as he could actually be trying to teach her what she needs to learn, rather than a vague sense of, “I still feel good in him.”

Besides the obvious pros of Canto Bight from a story perspective, the aesthetics are fantastic. Great costume and production design.

Hmm. That does help a little, I still don’t like much of the execution. (Drunk aliens stumbling on each other. Yes it’s at least implied people are drinking or whatever in other movies but they don’t make asses of themselves. The whole bb8 getting coins drunkedly shoved into him and then taking out guards by shooting them out later is dumb too)

I actually don’t mind the fathiers though.

Well I agree there’s parts that are annoying, never said there weren’t.

It’s probably safe to assume to that the stuff you didn’t like some people like too. I thought the coin gag was inventive and fun. It’s all subjective really.

But yeah stuff like the visuals is something I think people take for granted with these movies. The concept of a Canto Bight type place is cool and different for Star Wars, but I thought they definitely made it feel completely a piece of the universe (whereas you’d often get designs in the PT that veered a little too far into seeming like a different franchise).

I feel the exact opposite way lol

It would have been better if it wasn’t set up by a bad drunk CGI creature out of the PT.

I don’t completely disagree, though I will say half the reason why I hated stuff like that in the prequels is because they served no purpose whatsoever, which isn’t the case here at least.
