New Star Wars films to be produced and written by D. Benioff & D.B. Weiss (Cancelled) — Page 2

I think this is a misstep, but the right director could make all the difference in the world. If it’s bad, I guess I’ll just choose to think of it as the universe reestablishing proper balance after we lucked out with Trevorrow getting fired. Still, I’m not exactly thrilled to have the geniuses behind Confederate at the table.

http://www.starwars.com/news/game-of-thrones-creators-david-benioff-and-d-b-weiss-to-write-and-produce-a-new-series-of-star-wars-films

It was announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators of the smash-hit, Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Yeah, that’s because Game of Thrones was actually written by George RR Martin. Nothing against these directors and that’s fine if Disney want them to write and produce new SW movies but give proper credit where it is due.

Game of Thrones’s success on TV is from Martin’s story and characters which these directors have done a great job in transitioning them to a TV series. But it’s pretty clear to me that the story and character quality started dropping of to a large degree when they started significantly diverging from the books in later series and then continuing to write the full story themselves after they passed where the books were up to.

Hearing about these two writing new SW movies doesn’t give me any additional confidence over other directors/writers that I’m not familiar with outside of that one piece of work, confidence in the new SW movies themselves being great with good stories and characters just because they had great books to directly reference for what they are now getting acclaim for. It’s just Disney doing their usual marketing thing by linking to their prior success of which the best parts are actually derived from someone else’s work…

Edit: fixed my post to say “producing and writing” instead of “directing”.

Some posts have been deleted - they brought nothing to the topic at hand and derailed the thread. Just more repeated negativity and past petty bickering.

Mala - You have been asked before to reign this negative thread-crapping in. Consider this a last warning.

Collipso - Sorry your thread got trashed mate. I’ve edited the OP for you to include more info as Tobar quoted.

Everyone else - Apologies for the temp-locking of the thread (and also to those who may have had their previous posts referring to the above ‘conversation’ deleted).

Back on topic…

Thank you jason. It happens sometimes. Thanks for editing the OP too. 😃

And now this… hope they’re good, but once again I feel NO anticipation. It’s weird to feel this way about new Star Wars movies…

Genuine question, do you in general get excited about new movies? I myself have felt my anticipation levels for major franchise movies (and maybe just new movies in general) drop significantly as I’ve gotten older. I just wonder if I’m the only one.

Yes I do still get excited for movies (and many other things in life). I may be in my mid thirties, but I never really grew up in spirit. That’s not to say I’m a mindless obnoxious person on the internet going “ZOMG EVERY NEW THING IS THE BESTEST THING IVE EVER SEEN!!!” I have a brain with logic and critical thinking and reasonable judgement.

I’m sure that my excitement is oftimes more muted, level headed, or cautiously optimistic as an adult than it might’ve been as a kid, but it’s still there. And there are some things that I like so much that I still get downright giddy about as they come near. Kong: Skull Island and Justice League were two recent films that I was very excited to see. Kong was perfect, I love that movie. Justice League wasn’t perfect, but I liked it a lot more than most seemed to have.

Heck, I was genuinely excited for TLJ. I thought TFA set up a very cool premise with good characters and was eager to see where it went. While I didn’t hate TLJ, I’m far from loving it and initially felt a bit disaapointed. But disappointments like that don’t squash my enthusiasm for future films that I’m excited to see.

But I don’t get excited about everything that comes my way. I feel no excitement for these new unnamed Star Wars films. Maybe as more info comes out or a trailer drops, that will change.

In the end, I’m happy I can still feel the type of genuine excitement I felt as a kid sometimes. The world is too hard and life is too short to get jaded about everything (not accusing anyone here, just thinking outloud). It’s fun to still get excited about a movie that looks cool or sounds like it’s right up my alley (whether other people like it or not, like Justice League).

Well, I only got really really really excited for TFA, RO and TLJ literally hours before leaving for the theater on opening night. But I got so excited I couldn’t even sit down. I walked a total of 6 miles inside the kitchen on the afternoon before TFA’s opening. And I think the same will happen for the next Star Wars movies, just like it did for RO and TLJ.

I never got that excited for superhero movies after The Dark Knight Rises anyway so I guess there’s that. Up until 2016 I’d still go opening night for superhero movies just because I enjoy opening nights, but not because I was excited for the movie itself.

Star Wars is still in a league of its own for me, and this still hasn’t changed. I really hope it doesn’t change at all. But we’ll see.

Assuming this is a trilogy, it looks like we really are going to be taking a break from the Saga films with two standalone trilogies lined up for the next few years.

I’m excited about that aspect of this news and I’m really interested to see where these trilogies will lead us. I’m hoping at least one of them is set around the OT period.

Kinda surprised they aren’t coming on board to develop an epic SW TV show, rather than another movie trilogy.

I’m sure it’ll be all sparkly and emotive and swooshy with a huge backbeat, but can’t we just have the OOT already??

excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.

What kind of time frame does this give us?

The final episodes of GoT will air mid-2019, so they’ll presumably start working on their Star Wars a little before then. I’m interested to see whether this or Rian’s new stuff comes out first (I hope it’s Rian’s).

GoT completes in 2019, and I am presuming…

2018 Solo (Ron Howard)
2019 EP IX (JJ Abrams)
2020 Kenobi (Stephen Daldry)
2021 Film 1 of RJ Trilogy (Rian Johnson)
2022 Film 1 of B+W Trilogy (Benioff and Weiss)
2023 Film 2 of RJ Trilogy (Rian Johnson)
2024 Film 2 of B+W Trilogy (Benioff and Weiss)
2025 Film 3 of RJ Trilogy (Rian Johnson)
2026 Film 3 of B+W Trilogy (Benioff and Weiss)

Benioff and Weiss won’t be directing it though, just writing and producing.

Also, has it been confirmed that it’s going to be a Obi-Wan movie?

Not officially confirmed by Disney, but the rumours are well reported that Daldry is attached and that Pinewood is booked from Jan 2019 for the shoot.

Has it been confirmed that the Got writers are making a trilogy? All I’ve heard/read is that they’re making a movie “series”.

Correct as far as i know. And i think they are wise to not commit to another trilogy. I think that would be a mistake. The age of trilogies is over.

Bob Iger:

“Their interest was in creating a series of films that are Star Wars-based, and we’ve actually been talking to them for a long time,” Iger said. “They’re focused on a point in time in Star Wars mythology, and we’re taking it from there."

So, not necessarily a trilogy. They would seem a perfect fit for the ‘Old Republic’, to take the mythology back in time. Potentially creating something similar to the MCU with fresh new characters and timeline that could then go on to have their own ‘Star Wars Story’ spin off films.

We cant remain with Imperials Vs Rebels forever and I am sure Disney are aware of that.

Hearing about these two directing new SW movies

They aren’t.

Cheers for the correction, doesn’t change what I said though apart from swapping out “directing” with “producing and writing” 😉

I’m still pretty young, but my excitement for new movies in general has gone down. It’s better this way, because sometimes I forget release dates and get excited when it sneaks up on me. Also, I don’t live very near to any theaters.

I agree i feel like it needs to be every 2 years.

It would be interesting to see the Old Republic used almost like the MCU, with a seemingly endless amount of films taking place around the same time each building off each other in characters and plots. For example, introducing a Jedi Knight and having a series of films where s/he becomes older and wiser, a film about Republic commandos, a bounty hunter movie, and a movie about a Sith Lord during the same 5 year period. Then they could have a major event such as the arrival of Revan or the Vong, where all the characters team up to stop a common enemy.

I don’t know if I want this though, MCU movies have lost all novelty now and I’d hate to see the same for Star Wars. At the same time this would be the best way imo to keep the franchise alive for decades (which Disney seems to be planning).

The problem I’m currently having with the MCU is that the movies are becoming indistinguishable from one another, which is why the DC movies are becoming more and more appealing to me, because as messy as they may be they are so radically different from one another and as the saying goes “variety is the spice of life”.
