So, the new Avengers pretty much destroyed all TFA’s records, boooo. It’ll be interesting to see how it compares to TFA in the long run.

Also, slight bump for Solo, coming soon…

So it seems like Solo can officially be called a “disappointment” (for Star Wars), but there’s an interesting game of chess here when you think about it.

Almost without a doubt some of the biggest reasons why this didn’t do as well were related to release date - five months after TLJ, super crowded marketplace with Avengers and Deadpool, and Memorial Day isn’t as strong as it once was. So why did they stick with this release date? SW traditions aside, I think the simple fact is that Solo wouldn’t be able to handle the pressure of the December “event” position. Because the movie is not an “event,” and the brand would’ve suffered for it if the perception was that it was and couldn’t live up to it. Instead they positioned it as very much a “summer movie” (with the cast and crew constantly mentioning this fact) to make it clear it was light and breezy (and ultimately, skippable).

The math here being, I think they believe that Episode IX will make more money than Solo lost because it will have been clearly delineated as the “event” Star Wars movie that is required viewing. By allowing some viewers the option to tune out of SW this time around, the demand will be higher the next time they need to see one (plus for the people who have seen Solo, there’s a longer wait for IX than normal). Again, the Marvel solo outings work as a good comparison. If every Marvel film was a big must see event, then their 3-films-a-year strategy would be untenable.

In an odd way the Lord/Miller firing makes sense. Since you’re already going to have a lot of people checking out, you need to make sure that the spin off can’t be too niche and alienating for the fans. Whereas with a saga installment like TLJ, everyone’s going to see it anyway, so you can kinda get a bit crazy.

The one thing I think they could’ve done better was do a date shuffle. Solo should’ve had Ant-Man’s July 6 spot, and Ant-Man should’ve moved back to August.

If it doesn’t break even by the end of this weekend I’d suspect the studio will be worried though.

It seems like with the other new Star Wars films they were very front-heavy, but I suspect with Solo this won’t be the case so much and as a result won’t drop as much as usual the second week, given not everyone is rushing to see it right away. I work part-time at my local movie theater (pretty much just so I get free movies, popcorn, and soda), and everyone was being so negative and hating before it came out (didn’t even get to do a private pre-release screening like we did for Avengers 3 and Deadpool 2 cuz no one wanted to), and now like all of them really enjoyed it actually, so I’m kinda hoping good word spreads around about the film, and it does decent enough to warrant sequels.

Seems The Last Jedi has shifted 3 million blu rays in the US alone:-

For DVD - https://www.the-numbers.com/home-market/dvd-sales/2018

^ Some impressive numbers given it’s only been 6 months since the blu ray / dvd disc releases - and given the rise of digital downloading / streaming (and also piracy?) to take into consideration too, along with the shorter time between ‘cinema to disc/digital to tv airdates’ as well.

I’ve been waiting for complete Solo numbers and I think it’s pretty much done.

By far the lowest numbers on any SW film even unadjusted, less than 400 million worldwide. I knew it wasn’t going to be good but it really bombed compared to all others. Hopefully this is a good lesson learnt at Disney - don’t give something that people do not want.

Seems weird calling Solo a bomb considering it was still the number one movie while it was out for at least a little bit wasn’t it? I could be wrong about that. It underperformed compared to other star wars movies though. But if it hadn’t had that massive star wars budget it would have been fine…

It was the massive re-shoots that probably bloated the budget. They essentially made the same movie twice!

Depends on your definition/perspective. One of the most infamous bombs of all time, Cleopatra, was the number one movie the year it came out, but it still lost money. It all depends on how much it cost to make, and Solo cost way too much to have a disappointing run.

Yes I understand that, it was the reasoning behind the last sentence of my post.

Another movie essentially shot twice. They blew a ton of money on elaborate outdoor sets in England and ended up shooting all that material again later elsewhere.
Time has apparently been kind to Cleopatra, as it’s not the butt of jokes like Ishtar or Howard The Duck. Conan O’Brien made a few Solo jokes in his Comic-Con Week monologues. I’m surprised nobody threw a lightsaber at him. 😉

“and has already recouped its $4 billion investment” - if these films were free to make and market then yes…but they arn’t.

I think the title of the article may just be referring to recouping the $4b buying price that Disney paid to Lucas?

TROS has crossed the billion dollar mark worldwide but seems to stay behind TLJ…
