Recommendations for Legends (old EU) books, comics, etc. — Page 3

I didn’t like it. It was too close to the Jedi Academy books which aren’t good, either. It’s shoehorned in to that story and IIRC that main character nobody was made to be smarter than Luke or something along the lines. I don’t even remember the plot anymore but to me it was a lot of eye rolling.

So I’ve been getting kinda curious about the New Jedi Order series. Yes, I know that most fans don’t like them, heck even many of the SW authors themselves don’t seem to think too much of them. But I do regardless feel like picking up Vector Prime just for the sake of having experienced it.

So, is Vector Prime passable, just as a curiosity, or should I avoid any of these books like the plague? I’m also wondering how Vector Prime works on its own? I have no intentions of reading the entire New Jedi Order series, but I am intrigued enough to actually spend money on buying the first book in the series, if only for the sake of having it in my collection.

It’s post-PT, but I always have to give Matthew Stover’s Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor a strong recommendation. Fantastic book set shortly after ROTJ (and Truce at Bakura). There are some prequelisms (clones mainly), but damn if Stover doesn’t just get the OT characters, and for such a fun book it gets surprisingly dark at times.

Really hope Stover eventually writes a canon book.

Vector Prime is one of the worst books in the series, and I find it quite boring. So no, unless you’re reading it to get to the great stuff that comes after it in the series, don’t read it.

Not enough people read the EU.

Absolutely. I love Shatterpoint especially which is the best movie Samuel L. Jackson never made, and somehow makes Apocalypse Now meets SW actually work-particularly since it goes ultra dark.

Hi I’m New to the Forum. anyways after seeing the new Disney films (Force Awakens,Rogue One,Last Jedi)I always felt the Books from Legends were a lot better then Disney movies. I’m currently enjoying the Courtship of Princess Leia.

I enjoyed that one as well and still have the paperback , I like how they introduced the Witches of Dathomir and they made it into clone wars in modified form . A warm welcome to you .

and I really do not get how long time members here can be so rude to someone who just put themselves out there and maybe like something you do not , dude was not even being critical of anything or any one and just wanted to socialize , I wonder how many people get turned off of this site and never come back due to this treatment . You never really know who they could be or what possibly valuable contributions they might make .

I don’t think Duracell was being rude, just joking in a kinda snarky way.

Exactly. I think The Courtship of Princess Leia is dreck and don’t understand how anyone could enjoy it, but YMMV.

I don’t know how that’s even possible.

Why is that? Was it the plot, writing, characters, the author, pacing etc? something else or a combination of things?

What a way to reply to a new member expressing an enjoyment of reading a book - and likely wanting to talk about it further.

Has anyone here read both “Truce at Bakura” and “Shadows at Mindor”?

From what I’ve gathered, Shadows of Mindor takes place shortly (or immediately?) after Truce at Bakura, but what I haven’t been able to figure out (I know little to nothing about both books so I try to avoid spoilers) is if they’re connected in some serious way. Should I read Shadows of Mindor after Truce at Bakura, or does it not matter?

I’ve read both. In fact, I read Mindor right after Truce.

There’s small references early in the book. That’s it. Mindor is very standalone, you don’t need to read any other EU to get it (though apparently one or two characters from Stover’s prequel-era books appear in Mindor, but I haven’t read any of those and wasn’t lost or confused).

Ok, thanks.

I’ve been reading a lot of post-ROTJ novels out of order, and it has been a little bit confusing at times. I do intend to read Truce at Bakura at some point, but at the moment Shadows of Mindor has piqued my interest a bit more.

Oh man, Mindor is so good! One of my absolute favorite SW novels.

Without going into spoiler territory too much, there’s a framing device that means you theoretically could work it into canon if you wanted to. For a slightly more spoilery explanation as to how that can be (you don’t really understand that this is the case until the end of the book, but I still consider it a fairly light spoiler):

It’s told by an unreliable narrator.

But yeah, I can never recommend Mindor enough.

Well, the Jedi Academy Trilogy shows up on most Legends “must read” lists, so they can’t be that bad. And as with much of the 90’s EU I’ve heard it described as pulpy, but fun.

Has anyone read the X-Wing novel series by Stackpole? I had the first one (Rogue Squadron) in middle school and remember loving it. With Rogue One sparking my nostalgia for quality 90’s EU I’ve been seriously thinking about snagging the whole series. I’d have already re-read the first novel if it weren’t for the fact that I loaned it to a friend back then and he lost it 😦

The X-Wing books are good. That and the Zahn books are the best of the Bantam era.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

Nice, I always enjoyed the Thrawn trilogy. Will definitely keep a lookout for good deals on the X-wing novels. I know they reprinted them with the legends banner, but I want to get original soft cover copies in decent shape. I always thought they had beautiful cover art and the legends reprints kinda ruin it a bit by cropping it and slapping that ugly banner across it.

So does anyone know how the related X-Wing Rogue Squadron comic series from Dark Horse holds up? For the same reasons as the novels, I’m looking at buying up the comics. However, unlike the novels, I’ve never read a single issue of the X-wing comics. I liked some of the other Star Wars comics Dark Horse put out back then so I’m guessing I’d enjoy this series too.

The comics were written by Michael A Stackpole, so they are very good. The comics take place before the first of the novels.

Someone has asked a variation of this in the past, but just for clarification: can I read I, Jedi as a substitute for the Jedi Academy trilogy, since I’ve heard it kind of revisits the same story?
