“Today I am announcing that in the coming weeks, I will be resigning as a member of the United States Senate,” Franken said during an emotional speech from the Senate floor.

"I of all people am aware that there is some irony that I am leaving, while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the Oval Office and a man who has preyed on underage girls is running for the Senate with the full support of his party,” Franken said, referring to President Donald Trump, who has also been accused of sexual misconduct, and Roy Moore, the Republican candidate for Senate in Alabama.

“But this decision is not about me, it’s about the people of Minnesota,” Franken said.

He is right about the irony, but it is also right that he resign.

Not to mention that a man defending himself against a woman would likely get him arrested.

Why would he be arrested if it were truly self defense?

Why would anyone have any faith in American law enforcement?

Why not? Also keep in mind that even if one were arrested they did still have to prove you guilty beyond reasonable doubt in court. They would have to prove it wasn’t self defense.

I kinda wonder who could support Franken at this point.

My problem with this story is precisely that it was Franken’s decision to make in the first place.

Sexual harassment has been a serious problem within Congress since at least forever. And yet they don’t have any sort of procedure for dealing with it. Every single time it happens, everyone runs around and spends a couple weeks inventing their own “this is what we ought to do” procedures from scratch, and then they are immediately forgotten. The next time it happens (later that day), everyone runs around and spends a couple weeks inventing their own “this is what we ought to do” procedures from scratch. Because every time it happens it’s a one-of-a-kind-nothing-like-this-has-ever-happened-before scenario. Just like what we do every time there’s a massacre where someone who shouldn’t have any guns at all gets access to guns so dangerous that nobody actually needs them.

This is how people react to problems they don’t actually want to solve. Do people invent new legal arguments and distinctions every time someone shoplifts? No. We don’t want shoplifting, that’s why.

Admittedly there’s a difficulty with elected officials not being able to be fired, and the possibility of whatever administrative investigations/sanctions are constitutionally permitted being abused as a political device. But come on. There’s a proper response for the person who says their case is somehow special and unique and not warranting the same legal consequences as everyone else: tell it to the judge.

I agree, if there isn’t a set way to deal with this, there ought to be. Nevertheless, someone choosing to resign is always going to be able to go faster than having to do it via due process. Due process, by its very nature must take time or it isn’t really due process.

Here is the problem with this: Whether he is guilty or innocent, him standing trial while still a Senator will undoubtedly distract from his duties as Senator and could potentially cause conflicts of interest with those duties. The people of his state will be better served by someone who doesn’t have this cloud hanging over his head.

Also I know he admitted to being guilty in at least one case.

He should’ve gotten life, and this is only one case stacked up against a mountain of cases where the cop gets away with it; but it’s a start.

I agree justice was done in this case. Yes there are cases where the cop gets away with it, there are also cases where people presume the cop guilty and won’t give the evidence an open-minded evaluation.

http://thehill.com/homenews/house/363851-trent-franks-to-resign-from-congres

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) is resigning from Congress, according to two Arizona Republicans with knowledge of the decision.

One source said Franks would resign in the face of what the source described as forthcoming claims of inappropriate behavior.

Franks was mobbed by reporters as he left the House floor on Thursday evening but did not respond to questions.
“I’ll let the statement speak for itself,” he said.

As the news of his resignation broke, fellow Republicans approached Franks on the House floor, all stone-faced.

Several fellow conservatives sat with Franks, bent their heads and prayed.

I don’t know what he’s done but assuming there was at least one victim, hopefully they were praying for that victim. But they’ll probably just call the victim a liar instead.

The Trump White House is apparently where self-awareness goes to die. After Candidate Trump attacked President Barack Obama relentlessly for golfing, President Trump has golfed more than Obama. After Candidate Trump ran the most bare-knuckle campaign in modern history, his family has complained about the “viciousness” of politics. After Trump attacked Hillary Clinton with gusto for using a private email server as secretary of state, numerous White House aides have used private email.

We can now add one more to the list.

At Thursday’s White House media briefing, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders bid reporters adieu but then decided she wanted to address one more question: About Trump’s health. Toward the end of his speech Wednesday on recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, you see, Trump began slurring and mispronouncing his words.

But before she answered (she said Trump’s mouth was dry, again), Sanders had a bone to pick. “I know that there were a lot of questions on that,” she began, “frankly, ridiculous questions.”

Yes, because questioning someone’s health based upon anecdote is a really bad thing to do — except of course when you’re Trump and the person you’re talking about is Hillary Clinton.

The Trump campaign in 2016 made a concerted effort to raise questions and stoke insinuations about Clinton’s health using exactly this kind of evidence. At one point, it even ran an ad featuring video of Clinton stumbling at a 9/11 memorial and coughing repeatedly, as well as a photo of her getting assistance while walking up some stairs.

“Hillary Clinton doesn’t have the fortitude, strength or stamina to lead in our world,” the narrator intoned as dark music played.

Even without his accusers, Moore’s greatest soundbite hits reel paints a picture of a repulsive human being.
