Idea: New Plotline - Luke's Sister

There’s an idea I have for my edits, but I’m starting to wonder if strays too far. I’m already removing Leia being Luke’s sister from my cuts. I could just remove all references to Luke having a sister (basically just her birth and the scene on Dagobah in RotJ). I could keep the other, and make it Vader, as one draft of RotJ (or so I’ve heard) did.

However, there is another option that would add a whole new plotline to the saga: Luke has a sister (not Leia), and he wants to find her. This was what was originally planned for the ST before Lucas decided to ditch it and wrap things up in RotJ (although I don’t see why he felt the need to make Leia Luke’s sister). Here’s how I’d do it.

The scene between Luke and Leia on Endor would be moved to the end, after the celebration, and be reworked into Luke telling Leia that he has a sister, and he’s gonna leave to look for her. Then Han shows up and hugs Leia and we cut to credits (while we’re at it, the fact that we don’t end with Lando clapping has got to be worth something). This way, the movie would still give closure, but leave the door more open for the ST to continue the saga.

Now for the ST. MAybe in TFA, Luke is off looking for her instead of in exile? Idk. Anyway, Rey turns out to be his niece, as her mother was his sister. Of course, we’d have to wait 'till Episode IX, by which point we’ll probably know everything we ever will about her canonical parentage, before working the details. While the changes to RotJ provide an excellent buildup, I worry about delivering a good payoff.

So what do you think? Does this stray too far? Does it add to the story in a meaningful way? Do you like chicken nuggets?

P.S.: Any ideas for what Luke’s sister’s name could be?

I think the idea has promise, but would be very tricky to implement.

I’d keep part of Obi-wan’s ghost scene, so that it’s established that Luke has a twin sister. He simply doesn’t think that Leia fits the bill.

Here’s a potential ending:

-DS explosion. Han and Leia don’t speak.
-Ewok celebration. Luke returns, sees the ghosts. Perhaps there’s some ghostly echo from Ben to remind him of his twin sister.
-Luke and Leia discuss his family.
‘Luke what’s troubling you?’
‘Vader’s here. I’ve felt his presence. He’s my father.’
‘Your father?’
‘The Force is strong in my family. I have it. My father has it. My sister has it.’
‘That’s why I have to go.’
‘I wish I could go with you.’
‘You’ve always been strong.’
-Luke leaves, Han arrives and hugs Leia.
-Luke burns Vader’s suit.
-Pan up to the stars, and End Credits

Unfortunately, I don’t know if there’s a way for TFA to work without the knowledge that Leia is his sister, since Kylo’s entire being is built upon the assumption that Vader is his grandfather.

The easiest way to sever Leia’s blood relation to Luke is by recognizing that Ben could have easily been misleading Luke to keep the true ‘other’ safe. No fanediting is needed, except in the case of Episode 3.

I’ve kept the Dagobah scene, and just cut out the bit about Leia.

I don’t see why Luke would sense Vader when he’s already dead.

Moving the funeral pyre to the end is a good idea. I’ve heard the idea before (and for TPM) but was always indifferent to it. In this case, however, since the movie wouldn’t be ending with the celebration anyway, it might as well end with this.

As for Kylo, I have taken him into account, and came to the conclusion that he can just be a Vader fanboy without being his descendant. Sure, it might weaken his character a bit, but not by much. He’s still Han and Leia’s son, so there’s that.

Get on your knees and beg for forgiveness.

I don’t wanna know what happens after that.

The excommunication gets lifted.

That’s neither cruel nor unusual. I’m disappointed.

The idea that Lando clapping and the overall family photo look was too happy and perfect end on is actually one I got from here. Is it not popular? Anyway, I don’t have strong feelings towards it.

yaddah yaddah yaddah

This would work really well as a post-credit scene.

Maybe Luke is so close to Han and Leia that he calls them his brother and sister, so their kid is in a way Vader’s grandson?

I call my mom’s best friend my aunt, and her mom my grandmother.

Not sure how you could implement it, though.

Sorry. I’m used to Reddit, where threads don’t stay in use longterm, and every topic gets a new post. It’s not just that, though. I find it more intuitive to have threads dedicated to ideas than those dedicated to edits. When a thread is dedicated to an edit, you have no way of knowing in advance what kind of changes will be discussed, whereas if we dedicate threads to ideas, you know exactly what you’re getting into, making it easier to find threads that interest you. All in all, adding completely new ideas to an old thread is just a foreign concept to me.

I’ll try to remember to do it this way in the future, if that’s what’s prefered. I get where you’re coming from. I won’t deny I make much more individual threads this way. That said, I haven’t noticed anyone else complaining…but you’re a mod, so I assume you know what you’re talking about.

Yeah, I’d only make a thread dedicated to a wild change if I’d actually figured out how to pull it off convincingly.

I’m not a mod but consider this complaining. And I know what I’m talking about. Especially when I say Reddit sucks and the less we are like them the better.

No worries mate - though as others have said we are a fair bit different from reddit; some of threads on here have been on the first couple of pages of various sections for a long, long time 😃

Remember, you can always edit/alter the thread titles to reflect/cover what is currently going though your mind for ideas etc.

It may also give posters on here a better idea for the type of Edits you are going for - should they see many of the ideas you are aiming to achieve in together in one or two threads.

And keep on with the ideas for your Edits - it also may be worth watching or reading up on some of the other Edits available too for even more ideas.

Good luck with it all 😃

Believe me, I was a longtime lurker. A large amount of the changes on my list I got from here.
