Please keep politics out of this discussion. Thank you.

Unless of course we’re talking about an insurgency to overthrow an intergalactic governing body.

Just as a test, here’s the beginning of the sail barge sequence with flipped shots put back:

It’s more jarring than the original, without a doubt. Although, I do like that Mark Hamill’s face is flipped back to normal now. I think that’s the main giveaway.

Can’t say I found any issue with those shots flipped back, I followed along fine with where the barge was heading and the other ships location to it.

I quite agree. The viewer can follow the action just fine, and quite frankly I’m seriously struggling to see why it was flipped in the first place, as IMHO this version is infinitely superior. The only possible quibble from pedants I can see is that when they finally arrive at the Sarlacc the skiffs are now on the barge’s left side instead of the right, but since they’re all flying vehicles with vast space around them on all sides, and we don’t witness the entire trip, surely it’s not beyond the wit of the viewer to assume the skiff moved to the other side at some point before the journey’s end? Donald Trump might struggle to understand it, but regular humans with at least double-digit IQs won’t. I didn’t watch that clip and think, ‘My God! The skiff’s teleported!’

Move the models in the right direction to keep the human faces pointing the right way around.

I believe that because we are so familiar with these scenes we feel like we can follow it fine with shots flipped back, but that’s like being able to walk along a well-known trail without having to watch every step we make because we’ve walked it so often.

If the movie were released with those shots unflipped, it would have hurt more than helped upon a first viewing.

A great example of showing how important the 180 degree rule is, is to watch the “film” that plays at the end of Super 8, the one made by the kid characters. There are intentional breaks of the 180 rule to make it feel like a true amateur film made by kids.

I’ve seen Super 8 a number of times and can’t honestly say I ever noticed anything about this.

I’m not disputing the validity of the 180 rule but I think that maybe editors could fall into habit after using it a lot and end up applying it often when it’s not actually needed.

I understand what someone else said about being familiar with the shots already but I don’t think this is the case, not in respect to me anyway as I’ve never consciously thought about the barge and skiff locations at any point until this discussion, instead just watching the movie unfold as it does. This is how I watched the reflipped shots video and nothing felt out of the ordinary still, I didn’t particularly take notice of the vessels locations to each other except for the fact they were traveling somewhere and then they were stopped by the Sarlac pit with their location to each other unimportant / inconsequential since they are seperate and can travel wherever they wish. The fact the skiff ends up on the other side at the end just means my mind connects the information dots provided and assumes it moved to the other side when getting there (if I even really took notice since I’m more drinking in the location and wondering what fate awaits Han, Luke, etc).

I think it’s really jarring that Leia’s apparently looking out of the left hand side of the barge in one shot then the right side in the next. I suppose Han and Luke look a bit more natural, but that’s the tradeoff the editor makes.

The most jarring aspect of that scene for me has always been the unfortunate green screen however.

If there’s a way to fix the green screen that should be the main priority of that scene.

Also the real reason Mark looks weird in that scene is his make up. This is true for the unflipped version as well.

That’s not really how it works. The director is the one paying attention to the 180 rule. The editors aren’t going through checking to make sure every scene adheres (and not every scene should). Flipping a shot to fix 180 only happens if they feel a sequence isn’t flowing properly. Most of the flips here aren’t even about 180, though, they’re more about maintaining a coherent spatial geography.

Regardless, this discussion is pointless, as ady has already weighed in.

The problem is that the direction Jabba and Leia are facing changes, and their location seems to change from the front of the sail barge to the back of the sail barge. It just doesn’t work.

Flipping those shots doesn’t work because the skiff ends up on the opposite side of the barge at the end, which is why they ended up flipping them in the first place

Not being bad at all, but I did notice that and I felt that the Barge had circled around while we cut away to the interior of the barge and it was not a problem at all because enough time passes from the exterior to interior and back to the exterior again allowing for the change of / new position. you can hear the engines also within the interior shots slowing too…

But I did not feel it was an issue. But if you think it’s an issue no worries don’t mind it either way…

I agree… And apparently my brain can subconsciously fill in the gap of how one floating ship can circle another off-screen a lot easier than in can figure out why a flipped Mark Hamill’s face looks so absolutely unnatural on-screen.

I agree as well, I figured they went to the other side of the barge off camera before slowing down. Either way you do it, it will be distracting to somebody. You can’t make everyone happy. I’m fine with either way, so no biggie.

This is not an idea for return of the Jedi I have an idea for revenge of the sith and attack of the clones I was going to do it for my edit but you can go right away you should add darth mual into attack of the clones and revenge of the sith use after effects and take out count dooku and then replace with darth mual use a green screen and add him in. Another idea add Anakin in the Darth Vader costume for revenge of the sith when Order 66 goes down and the battle with Obi-Wan
I was listening to Darth Vader audio I would recommend using audio from Star Wars rebels when Vader fights Ashoka
And it would take out most of the clunky audio for the final battle

The first image uses a very specific chroma key and a hue shift, so it shouldn’t be too hard to apply to a video.

I had to use a custom feathered matte in the second image, so that the desert would be brighter than the actors and realistically brighten the edges of their figures. For a video this would have to be keyframe animated, but it’s doable.

I’ve found, in color grading AOTC, it’s pretty easy to get rid of the green spill by just reducing green saturation. The bigger issue with the shots, I think, is clunky compositing.

Mate, please post in the appropriate thread - this thread certainly is NOT that for your ideas posted above.

This thread, for example - http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-Prequel-Radical-Redux-Ideas-Thread/id/9911, is far more fitting for Prequel Trilogy ideas than this one.

Thank you.

That’s part of it, but you can see in both images that there’s a bright outline around much of the actors, which saturation alone won’t fix.

I’m afraid that it would take some serious rotoscoping to fix the greenscreen effect, and even then it might not be perfect.
