Most pointless Special Edition change? — Page 4

Just fuming about it because I was just reminded of it while doing my edit and having to take the time to replace footage from another source just for this. I’m sure it’s been talked about already but…

The cgi Doug in jabbas palace. JUST. FUCKING. WHY. It’s not that it technically looks bad it’s just the timing (oh everybody’s sleeping… Except this guy!). If they wanted to add him to a different shot that had other (awake) creatures I wouldn’t have really cared… But I would still wonder why.

My guess: simply for distraction. Lucas wants the audience to look on the left side of the scene because on the right side are the backround actors sleeping in an ‘unconvincing’ (=sitting) position.

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

I don’t know if this counts or if it’s too blatant, but the one that I always think of is the big CGI monster walking in front of the landspeeder when the Stormtroopers stop Luke and Obi-Wan to ask about the droids.

Obviously all the CGI cartoon stuff in Mos Eisley is annoying and pointless in general, but whatever, I get the logic behind it. It’s distracting, it doesn’t fit with the original effects, it detours into that long pointless sequence of the landspeeder going into Mos Eisley that doesn’t really add anything. But it doesn’t actively DETRACT from the story. And George always wanted the city to be bigger and more bustling. So I get it.

But WHY would you have the monster walk RIGHT into the foreground of a fairly important scene, that establishes to the viewer what a Jedi’s powers are? You can barely hear some of the dialogue because of that lumbering creature stomping in front of everything and howling. How are you supposed to focus on what is actually happening in the story?

Actually, the louder dewback as they’re walking into the cantina is similar in how annoying and pointless it is. Again, I get the logic of making the original a little more lively and lifelike, but it howls so loudly you can’t hear the main characters!

There are worse changes, but what they at least have going for them is that they don’t actively distract the viewer from the actual focus of the scene (for the most part). I don’t like them, but they’re competent. That kind of thing though makes you wonder if the '97 team really knew what they were doing. I would assume it’s filmmaking 101 that you should keep the viewer’s focus on the main action or story information in any given shot or scene.

the most pointless in my opinion is all of the slapstick cgi humour like the floating ball droid laughing and then getting bashed on the entry too mos eisly as well as the big ol fucking dinosaur and the jawas falling off it they both look like shit and dont fit into the theme of the movie

It’s so dense. Every single image has so many things going on.

MY BRAIN CAN’T REPEL BULLSHIT OF THAT MAGNITUDE.

Seems like people are confusing “pointless” for “stupid”.
The lizard guy’s jacket color change remains the “pointless” winner.
Most of the SE changes are stupid and poorly executed, but you can see that George thought they made the movie more entertaining… somehow.
The jacket going from green to red is totally pointless.

Yeah but if we declared a winner there would be no reason to keep posting in this thread.

Oh, I see.

I’ve wanted to make a paraphrased version of this post like the last 12 times anybody has posted in this thread. But instead I just made this post. Do you see what you’ve done to me?

I’m not talking about the worst, most offensive, or most childish change. I’m talking about the changes so baffling that it boggles the mind that anyone ever even thought of them and you can’t even begin to understand the line of reasoning going through Lucas’s head when he made them. When it comes to something like Greedo shooting or Hayden Christensen ghost, you may think Lucas’s reasoning for the change is idiotic, but you can usually at least understand why he did it and see what he was going for, no matter how strongly you disagree with the result.

But for me, the essence of just how pointless the SE is comes in two unfathomable dialogue changes that just make no sense. My least favorite dialogue change is the loss of “bring my shuttle,” but you can at least see why he did that since he was adding footage of Vader walking to his shuttle at that moment, so the line no longer made sense in context. But there are two that I just don’t understand why they were done at all:

  1. “You were lucky to get out of there” replacing “You were lucky you don’t taste very good”
  2. “It’s alright, I can see a lot better” replacing “It’s alright, trust me”

I’m convinced that the only reason these lines were changed is because Lucas initially recorded two takes and just decided to go with the alternate take when doing the SE for shits and giggles. It was just lying around, so why not? Otherwise I just can’t understand why he did it. It’s not something that makes or breaks the films, but in both cases they are made just ever so slightly worse because the humor and humanity in those lines that was probably the reason the younger Lucas chose them in the first place is gone, replaced by cold and sterile lines that were overly literal and overexplanatory. And for nothing. I just don’t get it.

“You’re lucky you don’t taste very good” is terrible.

I also like “It’s alright, trust me” better, but “It’s alright I can see alot better” matches his mouth movements better.

This was my vote. It went from Vader terse and pissed his plan failed, to a lengthy explanation about what we’re going to see two seconds later.

Showing Vader return to his Star Destroyer in ESB. Not only does it replace a perfect line of dialogue (‘Bring my shuttle’), the sequence just feels out of place with everything else that’s happening. The timing in the original was just fine.

For me it’s probably adding Jabba to Star Wars. I know it seems like I misunderstood the question, but I think in addition to being hideous looking it is completely pointless. That is, even if it could be done flawlessly, look realistic, and not have Han climbing over Jabba, it serves no purpose and should be left out.

I think they even altered Greedo’s dialogue in the original editing process to cover the same territory as the Jabba scene since they knew they were cutting the Jabba scene so now it’s just redundant.

Boba’s presence is also completely pointless. Combined with his role in Jedi, he now seems to just hang out with Jabba all the time.

I like the delivery of the SE line a lot better.

Another one that throws me off is Ben’s ‘This place could be a little rough’ is a different take audio wise.

Well we got a new contender! Greedo’s LAST WORD!

Ugh.

Quite strange that Greedo’s last word isn’t subtitled.

IF that change to the Greedo scene is from George himself, then that is now the fifth ‘vision’ he has had for it so far…?

Ugh indeed, ooj.

Is it usual for the offical Star Wars website, or other social media pages, to not make any mention of these changes for the 4KSE?

This has been the norm since 1997 (as in, 1997 was the last time changes were advertised).

The Star Wars website had articles mentioning / listing the changes made for the 1997 and 2004 releases (though IIRC the articles for the 2004 release were published in 2006: SW, ESB & ROTJ) - yet I don’t think they did so for changes made for the 2011 blu ray releases.

Good point. I should amend my statement to say that 1997 was the last time changes were advertised before release of a new version.
