This remains to be seen frevious. There is so much garbage floating in the water right now that it’s hard to see the bottom.

We have jailed more people than any other civilization in human history. Even the USSR and South Africa under apartheid didn’t sink this low.

There are two opposing narratives concerning the firing of Comey. The Democrats claim that he fired him because he was worried that the investigation would find evidence of his collusion with Russia. The Republicans claim that he fired Comey because of various and changing reasons concerning Comey’s job performance.

I don’t find either narrative to be convincing, for several reasons.

With regards to the Democratic narrative, Trump seems all too calm (for someone who is usually animated) to be fearful of impeachment. His interviews show a man as casual with the truth as he ever was on the campaign trail, a man who should surely be more guarded in his answers if he thought that he was guilty. His tweet, that Comey should be fearful of ‘tapes’ existing of their meetings in the White House, would be childish and thuggish intimidation if it was meant in all seriousness. However, Trump may be continuing some form of personal joke in the vein of Obama wiretapping Trump Tower. In other words, ‘you’d better hope that Obama didn’t wiretap us both, or your previous boss may be in a lot of trouble’ (JEDIT: What Catbus said). This seems like the type of moronic trolling that Trump is accustomed to, and the fact that he doesn’t spell this out is potential evidence that he is slyly pushing the Democrats’ buttons at the same time as he is speaking to Comey and his base.

With regards to the Republican narrative, this was too abrupt a firing to be merely a further ‘draining of the swamp’. His attempts to spin this as such are transparent. He is clearly acting to put the chill on the Russia investigation, and he is genuinely surprised that the Democratic establishment would be angry at this, since he so blindly assumes that he is innocent. How could it be problematic to fire the man in charge of the Russia investigation if he isn’t under suspicion? He wants Russia as a friend and so he doesn’t consider that this investigation is relevant to his administration at all. This is why he abruptly fired Comey. He’s the decider, and to have an independent lawman who won’t kiss his ring is beyond offensive. I believe that Trump was acting very much as his role on The Apprentice in firing Comey, and didn’t care that it may be seen as improper.

This is an unprecedented event in our nation’s history, and a foreboding one. Trump clearly doesn’t care about democratic norms or even pretending to act like anything other than a glorified mob-boss. He thinks that he’s fabulously smart and politically savvy, and though he is neither of these things, he does have the lizardlike sense of how to manipulate large groups of people. Case in point, he did little to erode his previous support (the polls are basically unchanged in this regard), and he also made the Democratic establishment and media overreact by acting in ways that looked from their perspective like he was guilty as sin. Taking the cynical approach - and I hope I’m wrong about this - this looks like a win for him. Of course, it’s devastating for norms, democracy, bipartisanship, and anything other than Donald J Trump.

Just playin’ devil’s advocate here but…

What if the whole Russia thing is nothing more sinister than general incompetence and naivety on the part of Trump and his team? If so, isn’t all this coverage a huge distraction by focusing on recent mad tweets like this…

…and not recent mad tweets like this…

Setting up an investigation into Trump’s imaginary voter fraud allegations (that just isn’t a thing in a free country, with a free press and free electoral oversight) but is probably going to be more about voter suppression is quite important.

There are a lot of people here that say Trump is ignorant, stupid, unqualified, stupid, ignorant, incompetent. They have a right to echo what others are saying if they believe that. Though I may not like Trump, he is not as ignorant, stupid, unqualified, and incompetent as some really want to give him credit for. There is a method to his madness and it serves him well no matter what any of us might want to say.

He has changed the playing field in American politics. This isn’t entirely his doing but he saw an opportunity to raise the stakes while getting support for it from all the Americans that were ready for change. The status-quo doesn’t have any experience in an atmosphere such as this and that is why they try to beef up the old tactics. It won’t be enough. They will have to evolve, they will have to come down and get in touch with the people before they have a chance in hell at turning the tables.

I don’t think Trump is unintelligent. But he is most certainly incompetent at being President. Look no further than the Muslim ban rollout, the healthcare vote (granted that’s more Ryan’s fault but Trump had a hand in it), the constant undercutting of his own people’s statements which destroys all of their credibility, or the way he keeps making the Russia story worse (the Comey firing is just the latest example).

The only thing he’s done properly are things that I could have done if I were so inclined - signing executive orders to get rid of Obama executive orders, and nominating a Supreme Court judge that was guaranteed to get through because the Senate got rid of the filibuster. Big deal.

All of his difficulties are unforced errors that make governing more difficult. He’s incompetent at doing the job he was elected for.

Exactly on point. Trump has a hard time getting stuff done like the examples you laid out. Trump just makes careless mistakes and fails to articulate his points in a successful manner. That’s one thing I’ll give to Obama, (I don’t particulary think he is as amazing as some make him out to be) which is that he was a master at articulating his points in an effective and professional manner. He was a well spoken individual unlike Trump. Which could have been seen as an advantage in the election since many loved the more “raw” approach I guess.

I read the article, though not twice, as you posted it. I don’t agree that it’s as black and white as the Harvard Law Professor says. I have no idea what went on in any possible meetings with the President and Comey and I have no idea what was really said.

If nothing else, it just brought more attention , to a battle that was brewing before Trump got elected.
