Maybe he’s someone we should tweet at when we do the open letter thing?

Good idea.

And has anyone here got the mad skills to repurpose the Rogue One trailer so that it depicts a rag-tag team of rebels trying to steal the Original Theatrical cut from the Evil Empire? That might go viral! 😄

This is GENIUS!

The sad thing is if they are waiting til 2020 then they missed an opportunity to at least release the original ANH for the 40th anniversary. Waiting til 2020 isn’t gonna make a difference with that film.

They were never, ever going to release an unaltered restoration of ANH without doing the same for ESB and RotJ and releasing them all on the same day.

LucasFilm and Disney have already unintentionally admitted they can release the OUT. In Rogue One we see Red and Gold Leader, Garett Edwards said that this was unused footage from Episode IV. So if they can make old, grainy, film from 1977 seamlessly blend into a major 2016 blockbuster with no one noticing, they can absolutely restore one of the highest grossing films of all time. Lucas’ lie about how the originals are in no shape to be restored is BS and everyone knows it.

To add to what crissrudd is saying, I feel like waiting another three years has other advantages for Lucasfilm aside from just the rights issue.

Some people are only just now getting around to buying the 2011 set. I honestly feel like we weren’t going to see a major reissue with actual new content until the time came to put the movies out on the next format. We’re only a year into 4k discs being a thing, and Star Wars has taken a long while to hit each new format.

To me, this is yet another sign pointing to 2020.

Mmm, this sounds awfully familiar. Before celebration the 40th anniversary was the most logical time for a release. Now that it doesn’t seem to pan out, things are pointing to 2020.

I don’t want to pessimistic, but from what we know from Mike Verta’s interactions with Disney, info from Disney’s restoration people, and Pablo Hidalgo, releasing the OOT is not a priority. So, there certainly seem to be no plans for a release in 2020, or otherwise. It appears to simply not be on the agenda, at all.

Hopefully, Mike Verta’s pitch has happened, and has set things in motion. However, I very much doubt Disney and Lucasfilm will have their own plans. There’s a new 4K restoration for ANH for sure, conformed to the SE. So, a new 4K mastered SE release may be pending, with some additional material, such as the Tarkin footage shown at celebration, but an OOT release seems unlikely, unless Mike Verta can convince them of the merits of his restoration.

I have not seen the original versions in almost seven years. There is no way in hell I am waiting another three years AT LEAST to see them again. I would take back everything bad I have said about TFA and RO if Disney releases the originals this year. Otherwise I can’t tolerate this carrot and stick approach any longer.

We keep telling you how to do so and you keep not doing it. That’s on you.

You do realize that the quality of a movie has nothing to do with a studio’s treatment of a completely different set of movies, right? Oh wait, you think the quality of a movie is solely dependent on a YouTube review of it, so of course you don’t.

The quality of the Disney movies is **** regardless of how they treat the OOT. Nevertheless, frevious, myself, and others would probably hold our tongues and refrain from criticizing or even caring, if Disney suddenly released the OOT.

I love the faith in Verta, as if Disney is going to listen to him. It’s truly hilarious

The last updates on his website have been promising, although he asked not to share these updates outside of the Legacy forum. It’s been awfully quiet from his side since then. What this means is still a mystery. Could mean that he’s just busy. On the other hand I would expect him to to be frank about any failure to get things in motion, as he’s always been in the past.

Well, he is the only forum member who’s actually met with the people who make the decisions at the House of Mouse. For making that effort alone, he deserves our thanks.

Done! I hope someone steps up to the plate, as a catchy viral video might get more attention than the open letter idea.

I was thinking how ironic it would be if the entire production for Rogue One was just the pretext for Edwards to infiltrate Skywalker Ranch and copy the O-neg scans for the fans.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

This may have been asked a lot already, but what exactly does it mean for the negatives to be conformed to the SE? We know that the original negatives have not been destroyed, like many have speculated, so how could they be conformed to the SE?

Quite simply, while the bits spliced out were not destroyed, they were still spliced out, so the negative is still of the SE.

Alternatively, they could’ve added SE material either during or after the scanning process.

The idea that single unique negative for a film exists that has been forever altered is ridiculous to begin with, but the suggestion that digital effects and alterations done were “permanent” is more so. Lucas and his BS was always this way. Maybe he even believes it, since he came out with this line with talking about THX-1138 a few years after, but y’know the guy is missing a few marbles.
