I’m a little confused about the goal/direction of the second version. Can someone summarize what is going on with version 2?

Thanks!

Same goal as v1, but with additional changes to deal with issues that came from the restructuring.

Changes from v1 to v2:
• A new crawl introducing the fact that the First Order has a new weapon. TFA Restructured introduces the threat of Starkiller Base later than the original movie does, so it is hinted at in the crawl instead.
• New music for the scene outside Maz’s castle to change the mood a bit. Since the crowd doesn’t react to the Hosnian system’s destruction but to an impending attack the music needs to reflect this.
• The incoming TIEs that originally replaced the Hosnian destruction will be changed to a Star Destroyer.
• Finn’s line “It’s the First Order, they’ve done it” will be changed to “It’s the First Order, they’ve found us” to make more sense.
• Hopefully fix a few instances where Kylo is talking to Snoke and his helmet is on where it should be off.
• Possibly inserting a deleted scene where Leia instructs Korr Sella to ask the senate for help.
• The view of the Starkiller Base when the X-Wings approach will be changed to remove the signs of the weapon firing.
• Remove cheerful Poe after the Starkiller Base destruction.
• JEDIT: Stabilized final shot.

As well as some other small ideas that may or may not end up happening. There was a discussion on page 23 about some further restructuring and stuff.

I think that sums it up pretty well! I’m excited for the end result; I’ve done all I can until Sir Ridley and NeverarGreat submit their puzzle pieces to have assembled, previewed, and released. I think V2 will be a substantial improvement thanks to these two.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Watched v1.0 the other day. It’s a great start and really does help the second act. One thing I did think about is… if the star is being drained during the X-Wing approach, why is the stream not visible in that shot? I figure the collector is maybe not the same location as the cannon, but you can still see (sunlight on) the planet–so the star should be behind the camera somewhere, meaning the stream ought to have been visible.

The collector was established to be in a different location, but the star was probably in whatever place was best for the lighting of the shot.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Which scene(s) do you need? I have the shot where Hux walks away infront of Kylo after Snoke tells him to make preparations, but with his helmet rotoscoped on.

The star was still being drained during the X-wing assault in the original version.

Yes, I know that. So that would also be an additional error with the original; not just that the planet was illuminated after the star was fully drained?

Excuse me, no. I misspoke. I just need Sir Ridley’s work now. 😃

What file format/settings would you like when I export stuff?

NeverarGreat said:

Well, there was the R2 map search that I wanted to offer up for consideration, so I’d probably get working on that as well.

Nice, what was the idea there? Don’t think I’ve heard of this.

Unfortunately the opposite is needed: his head rotoscoped over his helmet. But it won’t be too hard, it’s a view from behind and one from far away so I think it’s fixable.

It’s illuminated during Hux’s speech, but that just means they’re illuminated by a different star than the one they drained, or possibly that they didn’t drain it fully. About the shot of the X-wings, it’s cropped and doesn’t show the whole planet, so we’ll just have to assume the draining beam is out of frame somewhere.

Anything lossless should be fine to output; ProRes is what it’ll be turned into for use.
And if you are able to place Ren’s face on additional shots from that Snoke sequence, that’d be even better!

I don’t know if not seeing the sun being drained as the x-wings approach is an error necessarily, but either way it’s not a problem introduced by our meddling, so I’m unconcerned by it.

I’ll get to the face fixing eventually! I’ll just double check the export settings with you when the time comes, I guess.

From quite a few pages back:

JEDIT: I’ll just leave this idea here to come back to later, since there’s edit specific stuff to do right now:

As it is presented in the film, R2 has been in low power mode ‘since Luke went away’. BB-8 suggests that the map to Luke could be in R2’s backup data, and at the end of the film C-3PO says ‘you’ve found what?’, indicating that R2 has been searching his backup files in low power mode since Luke went away. The problem of course is that it is awfully convenient that he just happens to finish his search when everyone needs a morale boost at the end of the film. The idea that the presence of Rey unlocked the data also strains credulity, in my opinion.

So, my idea is to have R2 awaken some moments after BB-8 hits him but after the others are gone, using the beginning of the shot where his lights come on. He has overheard BB-8’s comment about his backup data, something he had not considered. He then starts to comb through his data, perhaps using a new sound and a flashing light on his body, much like the light of a hard drive reading data. Then, at the end of the film, he can complete his search and announce his discovery as usual.

What this edit would require is lengthening the first shot of R2 when BB8 pulls the cover off of him and deleting BB8, and placing the shot at the end of that scene with a blinking light animation to show that he’s now searching for the map. Then the first shot of the second scene may need slight lengthening to show the blinking light coming to a stop before his primary lights come on.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Do the covers I made for v1 need any updating for v2?

As a fan of what you are all doing - though lacking the eye and knowledge for the minutia/detail - I’d say that was a pretty seemless and well executed sequence. Very nicely done 😃

That’d be good, to include the final list of changes, and include credit for those who will have contributed since V1. Once that stuff has been compiled, I’ll request it; thanks!

That’s a great sequence. It does look natural, like it was part of the original movie. I’ll definitely want to check this newest updated version, once completed. Keep up the great work! 😃
