I guess it’s possible, it would be interesting even if he just got to flesh out an existing plan for the narrative. But I’m just suspicious that this is all a Lucasfilm board room creation after the 2-3 named writers on TFA. It’s probably all just done with a committee.
“I am not a committee” - Rian Johnson, probably.

Hey come on, TFA wasn’t made in a boardroom, it was clearly made with time, love and care. That’s why a messy script was rushed through production with “A New Hope” scribbled out on the front.

I haven’t seen anyone mention this but Josh Gad is a goddamn hero. I wonder if Daisy is as strong willed when she knows thw world isn’t gawking at her.

Yeah, you listen to JJ talk about the film for two hours and it’s clear how little he cares about it.

He always stressed how he liked original Star Wars.

If I was paid millions of dollars to do so I’d say the same.

Considering almost all his films have been remakes/reboots and re-hashes I’m more inclined to see him as a studio yes-man.

Just because JJ didn’t come up with something you like didn’t mean he didn’t come up with something he liked.

And no films had more messy scripts and rushed productions than the PT.

In TFA commentary there’s a bit where Han shoots a stormtrooper without looking, it’s weird and cartoonish.
JJ says “huhu classic Han Solo”.

I guarantee that an early draft of TFA had Luke doing something similar. Would have been awesome if it had happened that way instead.

I’d love to see Luke wield a blaster again. Not sure how that would work with the new persona though.

He could use it as a last resort.

If anything that void will be filled by Rey using her staff and blaster along side her Lightsaber. Han giving her that blaster pretty much confirms that it’ll stay with her for a while.

At this stage of THE LAST JEDI speculation, I’ve decided that I really don’t want to see this ‘Sequel Trilogy’ end with the ‘redemption’ of it’s current wanabe villain Kylo Ren whatsover…

I also don’t want any kind of ‘mirroring’/‘rhyming repeat’ of events from ROTJ for instance, where Kylo takes down Snoke eventually for the sake of a family member. Nope, rather than things resolving with some kind of ‘turnaround’ to the ‘light side’ for Kylo, I truly hope that we end up seeing the little whelp get his due comeuppance for killing off his ol’ dad Han…and that he gets saber-skewered good and proper from Rey by this new trilogy’s end instead (ESPECIALLY if she turns out to be related to him in some way!)

I’d far rather a satisfyingly ‘vengeful’ end dished out to the whiny git, who determinedly sticks to the path of the dark side…rather than see ANY sort of ‘reconciliation’ for his character.

That’s the kind of darker turn I’d like to see the final instalment given eventually, but I somehow doubt Disney will accomodate me.

I can but hope… 😉

I don’t question his love for the originals.

But after watching the Making Of feature for TFA, I came away with less appreciation for JJ, not more. He comes across as an entertainer, a guy who works well with others and plays to the crowd. This is all well and good, and is a vital element of any movie, but there has to be some underlying purpose for a moment other than ‘Isn’t it great to see Han and Chewie again?’. I feel like some of the deeper themes of the movie, such as the meta-commentary on Star Wars fandom, may not have even been intentional. To be fair, there is some question as to how much of the meaning of ANH was intentional vs manufactured by audiences in the decades since, but Lucas’s film didn’t lack for ideas.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that TFA is fun. If it isn’t any more than that, that’s fine. I look forward to what Rian brings to the story.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I don’t know. The redemption feels natural for such a character. Personally, I feel like Kylo Ren is potentially more tragic a figure than Vader (although this gets into a hairy argument about PT portrayal vs. OT portrayal). It’s hard to really say right now, still being quite a bit in the dark in regards to his turn and obviously not knowing where he’ll go from here in TLJ, but it seems kind of rough to just say that he doesn’t deserve redemption just because he killed a character we all love. Obviously people are going to complain rehash if he’s redeemed but that’s a pretty silly and arbitrary way of dismissing a potentially fitting end to his storyline.

Anyway, I have to imagine and hope Han’s reaching out had some impact.

The length of the TFA making of doc doesn’t really do justice to any aspect of the production. Look for any interviews JJ did about developing and writing the script and it’ll make a lot more sense where he’s coming from. Obviously, in the end he took a very straightforward/streamlined route with the film, and of course no matter what you do some fans are always going to be looking for something else. But I do believe he was given a job of making a film that had to juggle a lot of different things and he succeeded admirably. I think people who were iffy on TFA will appreciate it more after the sequels have built on what it’s set up.

Fair enough DC, but the main reason I want to see Kylo have a different resolution to the one his ‘grandfather’ had in ROTJ…is not just due to the fact that he killed off Han, but mainly because I’d rather he continues to be totally unrepentant about his dark side path, regardless of anyone’s efforts.

While I’d be more likely to bet that he WILL be shown to ‘come good’ by the end of this saga, I’d far prefer to see his storyline defy convention, and end with his character’s ‘retribution’ rather than his ‘redemption’ this time around.

And as far as his dad’s reaching out being able to influence him somewhat, that didn’t work out too well…

…so my push for EPISODE IX: STAR WARS RETRIBUTION starts here! 😉

Would have been much simpler if the guy would have just asked “Singular or plural?”. Rian probably wouldn’t have answered it but if he did there would be no confusion…probably.
