OT member Custom Box Set project thread

Author

 (Edited)

Greetings everyone. With all of the fresh blood lurking in the dark corners of the forum these days, I thought that maybe a thread dedicated to member created Box sets would be helpful. So if you have created a box set for the Despecialized films or Fan Edits, post pictures and descriptions of the materials/processes used herein…

And by all means, please repost your creation even if it can be found elsewhere on the boards.

However, please try to refrain from bashing someone’s efforts and let’s show a bit of luv to our fellow OT dudes and dudettes.

With pics to follow, here is the run-down for the box sets I created:

Films with Menus and extras: created by njvc, using Harmy’s Despecialized
The boxes: Lord of the Rings and Hobbit Extended Edition boxes, recovered with Star Wars art.
Cases: Clear 3 disc Criterion cases from Casetopia.com
Discs: Plex Disc Liquid Defense 25GB printable Blu ray discs
Printer: Canon Pixma with direct cd/dvd printing
Burner: Pioneer burner sold under the TDK brand name
Computer: Ancient Windows 7 laptop
Art contributors: Video Collector, Ron Lim, FrankT, phildesfr
Paper for the printables was HP 160 ink jet
Lastly and certainly not least, a very understanding spouse who indulged my delusions of grandeur…

I have a contact in Spain who can print custom stuff as desired for custom Box Sets. His Digi-packs are pretty neat, but he will also print stuff if you send him the desired files. I had him print the slips for my box set.

His blog:

^ That’s a fantastic quality dvd boxset there mate, and a top idea for a dedicated Boxset Thread too 😃

Some of the work that has gone into the DeSpecialized boxset covers alone are amazing - ronwlim, one69chev, FrankT, phildesfr, detola, G E Predator, Starwhore, natedeug, EyeShotFirst, RoccondilRinon, tommyauck, Mjvmovieman, The Aluminum Falcon, coov, Stealthboy, Morsoth, crpl_hicks, Spheretronic, Harmy himself and anyone else who I’ve forgotten to mention (many apologies) - all quality endeavours.

My box set is not quite a dvd cover…

Thought I’d knock up (cannibalise off the superbly talented ronwlim and other folks on here) a very simple USB Box Cover for my Harmy DeSpecialised set…

Minion

^ The USB Box above cost £8.95 + delivery, from here:-

https://www.amazon.co.uk/USB-Window-Black-Artificial-Leather/dp/B00ULK8ITE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482502830&sr=8-2&keywords=usb+photo+box

(click on the link above for more pictures - it is also available in white - and you can also get the USB Box for around £5 without the option for a photo cover).

The photo window size is 8.5cm by 8cm - I added an extra 0.5cm all around for the ‘artwork’ to fit in nicely.

It’s a decent quality box - with a magnetic seal, and sponge surrounding to house the all important USB drive.

There is also this similar USB Box for £4.60 (plus delivery), here:-

link - https://shop.photomart.co.uk/59168.html

I’ve also bought some of these bluray style USB Cases (5 cases for £8 delivered), here:-

link - http://www.leeds10.com/blu-ray-style-usb-case-clear-14mm-spine-with-insert-sleeve/

^ this case is the same size as many bluray cases (14mm spine) - is a good quality build - and the company delivers to many countries around the world 😃

See below for a couple of pictures of this USB Case being used with Rogue One & Harmy DeSpecialized Trilogy inksaver covers…

and I also found these smaller bluray/dvd style USB Cases - it measures in at 100 x 95 x 18mm (25 cases for £25 delivered), here:-

link - http://www.jetmedia.co.uk/flashdrives_cases.htm

For whatever reason there doesn’t seem to be a lot of USB Boxes or USB Cases available online, and the few that are have a minimum order of 100 or so from Chinese-based websites like alibaba.com & aliexpress.com, or US-based websites like shop.sunpack.com & premiumusb.com/ etc.

Some other USB Boxes are also quite expensive as they are often used by wedding photographers - and the magic word ‘wedding’ just seems to add £££s/$$$s to anything associated with one.

If you do come across any quality or cheap USB Boxes & USB Cases please post them up in here - thank you 😃

Some covers I made for the USB Box (mainly for ideas etc)…

(when I say ‘made’ I mean found on google or other places, resized them, edited them and then added some text to them using MS Paint with a few Star Wars fonts 😉)

Thanks for posting your work. It looks great. I especially like the usb box, it’s really cool.

For me, this is one of the best parts of the community–being able to enjoy and appreciate one another’s talent and creativity. Plus, we need something to help kill time at work…

i think this is a great thread! a lot of you have been saying that you print your discs with a canon pixma printer, but i am not sure what pixma printer is the best/actually prints on a disc. could someone please point me in the right direction?

I recently got a Canon Pixma MX922. So far for me it is working out great. I have printed about 20 labels right on disc already and it’s perfect. I am on a Mac.

A good friend lets me print dvds on her Canon Pixma iP7250 printer - am very happy with the results. It is just a printer though - no scanning or copying.

My old Epson Stylus R300 Printer still does a good job for printing to discs - despite being around 10 years old (it’s just out of ink - inksaver covers are the future 😉).

Good thing to remember when purchasing printers - the cost of the ink. Printer manufacturers make their money from the ink they sell - and hardly make any money on the actual printers

(this is why some printers seem flimsy, don’t have a good ‘build quality’ or decent components inside - and can be problematic when things go wrong - when compared to printers a from a few years ago).

So always remember to factor in how much the ink will cost for the printer you are thinking of buying…

I have the Canon iP7200 and except for the software not being the most user friendly, I have been really impressed with the overall look of the print jobs. However the Canon models in the U.S. have different part numbers, so some digging around on their site should yield some success.

^^ Really cool idea with the old school shipping boxes - love the logos as stickers too 😃

That’s a cool OT pic you have for the back of the black boxset too - doesn’t seem to many of them around that encompass the whole of the OT so a nice find there too.

Quality work mate - and a great new take for your shipping boxset!

Just a couple of Notes. First I give a lot of credit to FranKT for the use of his lightsabers for the insert of the Carrying Case Set. FrankT really inspired me.

Secondly, I would say I just assembled pieces I have found on the internet into an idea. Example the Transfer Case, I got from gleaming this forum…

http://originaltrilogy.com/user/rsortor/id/6843

Puggo Grande?

Third…it goes without saying that I intentionally made the “mistakes” on the Transfer case to make it look like someone had changes their minds on what the films should be called & that it has seen better days, being tossed around!

I’m not as Creative as others, but I tried to create something unique & not too cluttered. I will say the Black Set is “bullet Proof” I might have used a little too thick card stock! LOL

Again thanks for the kind words.

If you are looking for something a bit different, I came across this gentleman’s work on the Blu ray boards: http://jomasanra-digipack.blogspot.com.es/2016/04/star-wars-episodio-iv-una-nueva.html

I purchased his Bond stuff and will be looking as picking up the OT Digi-packs shortly. He lives in Spain does his products in Spanish as you can see, but will also produce them in English. I also asked him about creating some ‘extras’ for me to go with my set and he was happy to oblige. Please be aware that any transaction will be handled solely by him and his potential customers and that I cannot speak for his pricing/schedule, but my buying experience was without issue.
