I think they could beautifully write in Leia’s death to serve as a tribute to Carrie Fisher and an emotional sendoff for the fans for both the character of Leia and Carrie Fisher.

Don’t know how much Star Wars could benefit of playing with the fourth wall that way. Kilo being a Darth Vader fan that is shown in his intimacy speaking to a mask almost tore it down.

I hope they let Leia be Leia, and give the character a logical conclussion to its arc, whatever they decided it to be; and let us grieve Carrie in the real world where she belongs.

Agree with this. Leia is too important (and iconic) a character to not be given that honour.

However, if the way to complete Leia’s arc is through digital modelling then I’d prefer they look at other solutions. Whether that is tweaking of scripts for 8 and 9, or inserting unused footage from 8.

I guess I’d be open to a small percentage of cgi remodelling if it was used in conjunction with unused footage, was minimal and pretty much seamless.

And if what might be regarded as unseemly haste, Disney is negotiating with the actor’s estate over her continued appearance in the franchise.

They cite no source for the claim but it’s a little worrying.

Disappointing, but hardly surprising.

Well, it makes sense for them to do this regardless of what they end of choosing to do with Leia in the next two films. Even if they do decide to write her out of ep.IX and have her character die in ep.VIII, they’ll still have to add some CGI. They obviously didn’t shoot a death scene so they’d have to use CGI to put Leia into such a scene.

Getting the rights to her appearance is just good “insurance” at this point regardless of how they end up using it. It’s a tad hasty, yes, but Disney has a lot of money riding on this and not too much time to solve the problem. However ep.VIII doesn’t come out until roughly 11 months from now, and they’ll have even more time to plan ep.IX, so it’s not like won’t have time to monitor how the fans react to this.

True, it is prudent, and I can totally understand their reasons.

However, I don’t trust Disney to stay within the realms of good taste here, seeing how Rogue One handled the issue of Tarkin. In regards to CGI at least they seem to be sticking to the “more is better” approach favored by Lucas when making the SEs and PT.

Disney hasn’t done a single thing right in 5 years. No OOT. Two mediocre schlock movies. One of them entirely cribbed from the original. And a bunch of annoying paid reviewers spamming the internet later.

And what have we got?

Disney Wars! Vader vs. Predator. Vader vs. Magneto. AT-STs! Ay Tee Es Tees! Toys. Merchandise! Theme park rides.

What a wonderful smell they’ve discovered…

FTFY hermano.

Vader vs. Predator. Vader vs. Magneto.

First I’m hearing of it…

Just so everyone knows, BBC Newsnight have now issued a clarification (or ‘retraction’ if you will), saying that Disney has NOT entered into any conversations with Carrie Fisher’s estate at this time…and that any reports to the contrary are false.

(so it seems that Disney are at least leaving the family alone about any future CGI plans, for the time being)

"We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa.

Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars."

That’s nice of them to say.

I wonder if they might do something like they did to Col. Blake on M*A*S*H to Leia?

I don’t understand a thing about law and rights (I don’t undertand in my country, figure out what I could know about law and rights in foreign ones), but I remember hearing that Disney already held the likeness of Carrie Fisher, Mark, and Harrison from back then, so how can it be that they are holding that conversation again?

If they held the likeness when she was alive, with her decease that “property” goes back to her family?

I honestly think this might be a disguised landscape evaluation from Disney.

Oops.

I think you have some serious issues Fink. Disney puts out a statement like that about Carrie’s death and your only response is to continue to argue with other posters. Maybe one of the moderators should have a discussion with you about your posting behavior on OT.com

And yes, I agree with Tyrph. That was nice of Lucasfilm to say.

We’ll see if it was merely a strategically timed statement, or if they actually stand by their word.

My opinion is to use CGI to have her in Episode IX and continue as previously planned with episode IX. If they were intending to kill her in episode IX, do so. If they weren’t, don’t. Some will say it would be disrespectful and it is too. It if was not disrespectful to Cushing, why would it be to Fisher? As for being too soon, just where is that line drawn? 20 years? 15 years? 10 years? 5 years? 3 years? Where??? and who decides this? I think she would want to be in episode IX. Get the approval of the fisher’s family first of course(and don’t do it without it).

better yet why not have her daughter be put in old make up boom it would be like she was still with us. much more respectful to her family if you ask me.

The fact that Disney had to issue such a press release at all is testimony to the public unease on this issue in the wake of Rogue One. If LFL’s digital wizardry has no qualms about zombifying an actor who’s been dead for 20 years, why should they show any (the thinking goes) about resurrecting a mainstay of the SW franchise who died unexpectedly young?

Obviously Disney and LFL weren’t planning to have to confront this issue head-on immediately on the heels of Rogue One’s release. However, digitally resurrecting Peter Cushing was a Pandora’s box and – especially given Lucasfilm’s track record of embracing all forms of CGI – it’s understandable that people don’t expect it to stay closed.

If Lucasfilm do indeed intend to use Fisher’s image for future movies or even if they want to keep the door ajar, why would they make such an unequivocal announcement? Especially given there was no real need for them to respond to this rumour
