What is your preferred browser? For Mobile; for Desktop? Why? — Page 3

Shit, you guys are like speaking in another language or something. All I know is I tried some other mobile browsers a few years ago and they either wouldn’t zoom in/out or sucked at it. Opera was by far the best at doing that so I stopped using other browsers. Things have probably changed in the past few years…maybe? But I’ve no reason to stop using Opera 'cause it still works great as a mobile browser accessing desktop-optimized sites.

I mean, if you like Opera, use Opera. I just haven’t heard of many people using it.

ANDROID USERS SHOULD NOT READ THIS

Lol at not being able to zoom in.

Mr. Awesome Computer Arguements

I’m not flattered.

You aren’t meant to be. But don’t mind me, my opinions are crap.

You’re actually quite reasonable on a lot of things, except for computing.

I was also quite irritable when I wrote that comment so I apologize for any hard feelings.

No need to apologize.

Well I’m a web user since the old days when I used lynx. Then I upgraded to links. When Windows started to be usable and not just a crappy toy which crashed every 5 minutes, I started to use a DOS+Win3.1 combination and Mosaic, when Mosaic ended I switched to its spiritual successor Netscape Navigator, when Netscape became a giant bloated slow monstrosity I switched to its lightweight “brother” Mozilla. When the Mozilla project split to different projects I stayed with Phoenix, later renamed to Firefox.

I am still using most of the time Firefox on both Windows and Kubuntu, but it pisses me off more and more with every new release. They removed the status bar, they removed most of the configurations (which was my favourite thing about the browser) from the settings (now they’re available just through the about:config URL), removed Javascript prohibition and the main menu, all of those things I absolutely hate, but I still hate Firefox less than other browsers I tried. But now the last drop - on most sites with an https problem the browser simply doesn’t let me on the site (previously it allowed me to set an ssl security exception), which is absolutely unacceptable to me and I’m seriously thinking about abandoning FF for good. However what should I chose? Is Opera still a thing? I hate everything about MSIE, I don’t like Edge, I don’t like Chrome (it’s a good browser but I can’t configure basically anything which is a deal breaker for me), so what else is there?

Mobile - as an android phone user I use the built it browser, which is based on Chrome. I never had a reason to search for anything else but I don’t use my phone for web browsing that much, basically 99.9% of my web browsing is a search when the next bus is coming etc.

Edge is pretty meh, but it’s leaps and bounds better than the most recent IE, so kudos to Microsoft for modernizing (or trying to).

I have a Windows Phone so my mobile browser is based on Edge and I find it to be pretty solid. Could use some more features, but it does a good job and is quick.

Are you my Father-in-law or something? He’s the only one I know with a Windows phone. Even my 90-year-old grandma has an Android phone.

Since I know everyone, you must be talking about my Father-in-law.

What’s the deal with Windows Phone anyway? I thought Microsoft had given up on it.

Windows Phone looks a lot better than Windows, by the way.

Windows Phone is incredible. Best phone I’ve ever owned. I help my dad with his Android phone every now and then and it’s such a frustrating locked down piece of garbage OS.

They’re pushing some new updates for Windows (10 and 10 Mobile) lately that have all been pretty great in my opinion.

Yeah, just don’t install that recently released build 16212 update from MS…

(as ever with The Reg articles - the comments section is always worth a read 😃)

and that’s not to say that Windows phones aren’t decent - the more choices we as consumers have, the better 😃
