Game of Thrones - anyone else feel like this season is the show on fast-forward? They should’ve stuck with two 10-episode seasons to even out the pacing instead of this weird 7- and 6-episode final seasons business.

Unfortunately that wasn’t possible given the technical and proficiency aspects of filming due to the stories told this season (20+ locations in 5 countries with several units) - plus the contractual aspects of the cast and crew (mainly time available)…

They had little option but to reduce the number of episodes - yet lengthen those episode run-times so in essence it is an eight episode season (fewer scenes apparently ended up on the cutting room floor for this season than previous helps).

Next season will mostly see near feature-length run-times to finalise the story.

Personally, I think this season struggled a little with the pacing in the first 2/3 episodes - but has hit it’s mark since then… (with one episode more to go - unleaked, anyway 😉)

Seems Star India and HBO Sweden & HBO Spain have played a blinder sidelining the hackers since their demands were made public - though HBO really shouldn’t have announced they were going to war on the pirates like that - it was only asking for trouble… (then and since) - which they found as quickly as Euron manages to dart around Westeros 😉

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

I’m skeptical of this explanation. In previous seasons that’s kept them to the 10 maximum but there’s nothing new this season about the various locations and scheduling headaches that would require 3 less episodes. Only thing I can think of is their weather excuse (Winter being here and all) but that’s kinda silly because A) we haven’t seen much sign of winter outside of the North, and B) rarely are shows/films shot during the proper season (movie magic and all).

I think the real thing that happened was the show runners only wanted to do seven seasons, which meant that they had to jam pack the final/seventh season with a bunch of wrap up stuff. However two problems arose in that they had a 13 episode final season mapped out, but it was not feasible to shoot a 13 episode single season, and HBO wanted to stretch it out another year. So the season was split in two, and instead of taking the chance to look at how they could further flesh out their planned, rushed final 13 episodes and expand them into 20 (or hell, even 18 or 16), they probably got a bit cocky and thought “nope our plan is perfect, we don’t need anymore than that.”

Speculation but it seems to me to be the case.

I think it had to do with a compromise between HBO wanting at least two more years, there not being enough material for 20 episodes (which I’m skeptical of), and renegotiated actors’ contracts with higher per-episode salaries.

But that’s all speculation with little to back it up.

Actors’ contracts is definitely a consideration, though this is a show where no character appears in every episode.

Also, 10 episodes would mean a whole other month that people would subscribe to HBO than if it were just 6.

The idea that the show runners are floating that the show had to be exactly 73 hours, no more, no less, is ridiculous. Somethings in the first few seasons took forever (how long did it take Bran to get where he was going, or Daenerys?) whereas in last weeks episode

Tryion goes from the battlefield, to Dragonstone, to King’s Landing, and then back to Dragonstone, while Gendry appears for the first time in four seasons in King’s Landing and then is beyond the Wall before the hour is up (and those two examples are just the tip of the iceberg).

A quick look into the ‘Inside the Episode’ videos by HBO may give an insight into the bars raised for this season compared to previous - as well as the time considerations for cast & crew contracts as a result, budgets and the (money-consuming) use of quality CGI. It’s also really 2 less episodes given the average running times…

Just my two-penneth, of course.

The Defenders.

Alright. Better than the back half of Luke Cage or the two episodes of Iron Fist I put myself through. The Hand are getting old, I hope we’re done with them now.

It basically functions as Daredevil season 3 guest starring Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Danny Rand, and friends, though, as opposed to its own thing like The Avengers did.

I’m still on the fence about Elektra, both from DD S2 and Defenders. Then again, I’ve never been a fan of the character, so I’m not sure if I expected her Netflix treatment to make me like her or not. I will admit that it may have something to do with how much Matt and Elektra’s relationship reminds me of mine with someone else (also doesn’t help that Elodie Yung looks so very similar to her), which isn’t super pleasant, but I dunno.

The best part about it for me was Jessica Jones, which isn’t much of a surprise since JJ S1 is still far and away my favorite of the Marvel Netflix shows to date. Krysten Ritter was on point the whole time, even if the writing was iffy now and again. (These team-up movies and shows seem to rely a little too heavily on quippy dialogue IMO, but Ritter sells it better than the rest.)

Finally, no spoilers, but I was pretty disappointed in Sigourney Weaver. She did as well a job as could be expected, but she was wasted on an incredibly boring villain.

But the pacing was better than most Marvel Netflix offerings, even if the last episode felt rushed, and I found myself enjoying it through to the end, despite the issues I had with it.

2.5 faceless ninjas out of 4.

(Also, why was The Hand going to destroy New York again? Didn’t seem necessary given what their goal ended up being…)

Has anyone else been watching Ken Burns Vietnam? If so, what do you think of it?

I haven’t yet, but I’m interested. What do you think so far?

It is good so far, but I didn’t understand why in episode 1 when they were talking about the history of Vietnam from the 1800’s to the 1950’s, they interspersed it with quick bits of soldiers and other people talking about things that happened to them in battle and whatnot during the war itself. It felt awkward and out of place. I think those things should have been saved for when the documentary got the war itself.

Will have to give ‘The Night Of’ another watch - seems a while ago when I first saw it.

Plus congratulations to Riz Ahmed on his Emmy win (with video) for it:-

I’ve watched the first five episodes of Firefly. I like it, but wish there was more cultural flavour amongst the disparate human planets.

I stopped reading right there. There is no “but” when it comes to Firefly unless it has to do with its cancellation.

Ha! Very much so 😃

Funny that - it reminds me of Red Dawrf’s own foray into ‘music’…

Roll on the 12th October for season 12 😃

Watched all of FARGO. Season 1 and especially Two I really liked. Might need to rewatch Season Three. Currently rewatching Reilly: Ace of Spies, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy + Smiley’s People, RED DWARF I-XI, Black Adder, Mr. Bean, The IT Crowd, HUMANS (can’t wait for season 3), and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Been recommended The Wire, Game of Thrones, Blake’s 7, and tons more.

I watched the second season of Stranger Things today.

The wait was long and agonizing, but well worth it.

9.5/10

season 3 of of Mr Robot has been most intriguing so far - with a return to some humour in it’s social commentary on the state of politics in the world right now… 😃

Rd Dwarf has been pretty good too - 1 mixed/poor episode and 2 decent/good episodes.

Looking forward to seeing this Stranger Things too.

I only just started season 3 but I hope that it returns to more of what season one was. Season 2 just got too involved. Season one had a nice purity of plot.

Every angry video game nerd video thus far. Loved it. I remember some of those games from my grandmas house growing up (No I’m not THAT young but my grandma had a NES with a few good “name brand” games and a shitload of other random sometimes good sometimes crappy third party games that i imagine she bought wholesale at a flea market for the kids to play with) and some of the bad games I remember. I had Simons quest, karate kid, Milosz secret castle and other games he did famous reviews on.

Hah, I did that a few years back. I know a lot of people don’t like him, but I really enjoy the videos.

I really like his non-character videos, too (like James and Mike Mondays). It’s a cool look at games maybe you haven’t seen before (or last saw a long time ago). Good stuff.

I like him but I think sometimes his character is too much. Even then though his character has some great lines and isn’t shrill and unwatchable like the Nostalgia Critic is to me. James out of character is great too.
