This is why Conservatives can’t stand liberals.

Conservatives can’t stand liberals because of the divisive tribal environment in this country which encourages blanket statements like this post.

“This post,” meaning the one you’re quoting, or “this post,” meaning the equal blanket statement you are making?

The legal ramifications of firing someone for being a member of the Nazi party, versus being a member of BLM, are very different. The reason is that (to my knowledge) Nazi is not a protected class. Now, being a member of a protected class does not mean you can’t be fired. It means you can’t be fired for being in that class. An employer who fires someone for being in BLM would find themselves in court arguing that they fired the person because he was in BLM, and not because he was black, versus a skilled lawyer who would be working very hard to convince the jury otherwise. A good lawyer would have a field day, and the employer would be quite vulnerable. By contrast, there is no protected class status for being a Nazi, so there is no comparable legal issue.

There’s also the obvious fact that BLM, aside from a minority (arguable in size) of its supporters, is not inherently violent, racist, and supremacist in nature.

That could be debated. Protected class cannot.

BLM isn’t a protected class.

I know that. You must not have read my prior post.

I did read it. I was pointing out how much of a false equivalence BLM and Nazis are in the first place. It really isn’t even debatable. It also doesn’t necessarily have to do with a protected class either because there are non-black members of BLM.

It’s true that my point is inapplicable if the BLM member fired was white. And I never said that BLM and Nazi were equivalent; in fact, I was arguing that they aren’t equivalent. However, if a black person were to get fired for being in BLM, a good lawyer isn’t going to get bogged down into arguing that it’s morally wrong, he’s is going to use the BLM status as evidence that the employee was actually fired for being black, which is a protected class. No such legal device would exist for a Nazi that was fired, so I was arguing that Warbler’s point (that firing a Nazi is as illegal as firing a BLM member) isn’t true.

Right and wrong is great, but in court you have to have some legal statute to refer to.

The headlines/media discussions seem to be about the first sentence in the Flynn story:

Flynn said he called a senior transition team official at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort for guidance, before asking Kislyak to moderate Russia’s response, which Russia ultimately did.

But the second sentence is pretty intriguing too.

Then, he told the court, he called transition team members to tell them what had transpired.

Who could those transition team members have been? By use of the plural form, more than one of the following:

Mike Pence, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani, Jeff Sessions, K. T. McFarland, Gov. Mary Fallin, Sen. Tim Scott, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Rep. Tom Reed, Rep. Cynthia Lummis, Steve Bannon, Rep. Lou Barletta, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, Rep. Chris Collins, Rep. Tom Marino, Rebekah Mercer, Steven Mnuchin, Rep. Devin Nunes, Reince Priebus, Anthony Scaramucci, Peter Thiel, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, Rep. Sean Duffy, Rep. Trey Gowdy, Rep. Dennis Ross, Pastor Darrell C. Scott, Kiron Skinner

That’s a whole lot of people who might have knowledge of the event, Mr. Mueller. And a lot of people to try to successfully get their stories straight, too.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is calling on a freshman House lawmaker considered a rising star in the party to resign his seat after allegations surfaced that he sexually harassed one of his campaign aides.

In an article published Friday by BuzzFeed, Rep. Ruben Kihuen (D-Nev.) was accused of making unwanted sexual advances toward his then-campaign finance director. The woman, identified only as Samantha, told BuzzFeed that Kihuen propositioned her for dates and sex and twice touched her thighs without consent.

In a statement, DCCC Chairman Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) said politicians “guilty of sexual harassment or sexual assault . . . should not hold elected office.”

“Members and candidates must be held to the highest standard,” Luján said. “Congresman Kihuen should resign.”

And so the Republicans are tied to a massively unpopular ‘legislative victory’. Gotta love the tone of the article by the end:

"The bill now theoretically will head to a conference committee to mesh it with the House bill. Or the House will just try to save time by passing the Senate bill.

Neither bill is popular.

They don’t care."

Two thoughts on this tax reform…

First, I fear that it is designed to transfer success from small businesses to big businesses. Unless I am misunderstanding something, I don’t see how a small business can survive startup year(s) if it isn’t able to deduct its business expenses… those represent its investment in the future. Couple this with the end of net neutrality, and it’s pretty clear who our government cares about.

Second, I hope that Congress/Senate resolve away the provision in the Congress version that makes grad students count tuition waiver as income. That would cause a huge increase in student loan debt, as well as drive a number of students out of grad school and do further damage to scientific research. A student living on $1000/month having to claim 40-60K a year income? How is that fair?

Mueller is serious business.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/02/us/politics/mueller-removed-top-fbi-agent-over-possible-anti-trump-texts.html

WASHINGTON — The special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, removed a top F.B.I. agent from his investigation into Russian election meddling after the Justice Department’s inspector general began examining whether the agent had sent text messages that expressed anti-Trump political views, according to three people briefed on the matter.

The agent, Peter Strzok, is considered one of the most experienced and trusted F.B.I. counterintelligence investigators. He helped lead the investigation into whether Hillary Clinton mishandled classified information on her private email account, and then played a major role in the investigation into links between President Trump’s campaign and Russia.

But Mr. Strzok was reassigned this summer from Mr. Mueller’s investigation to the F.B.I.’s human resources department, where he has been stationed since. The people briefed on the case said the transfer followed the discovery of text messages in which Mr. Strzok and a colleague reacted to news events, like presidential debates, in ways that could appear critical of Mr. Trump.

A lawyer for Mr. Strzok declined to comment. A spokeswoman for the Justice Department said that “we are aware of the allegation and are taking any and all appropriate steps.”

Mr. Strzok’s reassignment shows that Mr. Mueller moved swiftly in the face of what could be perceived as bias by one of his agents amid a politically charged inquiry into Mr. Trump’s campaign and administration. But the existence of the text messages is likely to fuel claims by Mr. Trump that the F.B.I. has a bias against him and that he is a target of the “deep state” — a term used to describe the notion that government intelligence agencies secretly conspire together.

It’s insane. It’s one of the worst bills ever. All you have to do is look at the riders to know it: this was an “easy” pass for them so of course they stuck in a provision to drill for oil in previously-protected lands (that wouldn’t make it on its own), and a provision to gut parts of the ACA (because they couldn’t pass it otherwise), and more. That’s how you know the corruption runs deep.

Not to mention the actual language of the bill and the process of the bill. Provisions for a tax credit for low income families were proposed but nixed because they would mean a one percent decrease in the tax savings for corporations. Not to mention the “tax breaks” they keep shouting about for the average American all end to coincide with the end of the potential second term of a Republican President. Corporate tax breaks, though? No end date.

Not to mention provisions for tax breaks for religious schools and homeschooling (which is very often religious), plus tax breaks for a school run by DeVos’ family, huge tax cuts for richer people and businesses, and the list goes on. The corruption is thick and rampant.

Go vote. 2018 is a big election year. Clean them out.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

It depends. He can (effectively) fire Mueller any time he wants, the Senate and House leadership would do anything to avoid criticizing him, it’s pretty reasonable to think Putin’s got his back in future elections*, and he’s only two justices away from a completely neutered rubber-stamp Supreme Court. Certainly dense is one explanation for his behavior. Impunity is another – maybe he has no reason to feel so confident, but maybe he does.

Mobutu Sese Seko did several illegal things right out in the open for everyone to see, and I don’t believe he cared one bit if they would ever be used against him. In fact, doing them right out in the open was a signal to the public that he could truly do whatever he wanted without repercussions.

* TBH I think this is the weak link in the logic. I think Putin gets a lot more from extended chaos in the US than from owning any particular leaders. Putin wins whether Trump stands or falls, and popcorn costs a lot less than propaganda.

The groundwork for the upcoming Saturday Night Massacre Reprise is already being laid.

Strangely, it involves Devin Nunes taking back his leadership role on this issue, which he said he was stepping back from about 326 scandals ago. Nunes, Nunes, now where else have I seen that name recently? Oh yeah.

Yeah, no conflicts or suspicious timing there at all.
