Rogue One * Spoilers * Thread — Page 147

They never actually said Raddus was already en route, only that he had returned to his ship. I just figure it’s still in orbit around Yavin at that point, and that the droids shuttled over. Or maybe everyone regrouped at a rendezvous point before heading to the battle. Point is, Raddus’s ship shows up at Scarif at the exact same time as the rest of the fleet, so there’s definitely some opportunity for the droids to catch up.

I found the cameo jarring. Would’ve preferred to have just seen them in the background on the Tantive IV.

They did only say he returned to his ship. The Blockade Runner was probably landed, Artoo and Threepio boarded and it docked with the cruiser. Their cameo got the biggest applause when I saw it opening night.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

I don’t think it presents any continuity issues. I just thought it was kind of dumb and lazy. Could’ve been a bit more creative about it. Almost feels like it wasn’t there, then someone at LF said they had to.

I kinda like it. Continuity wise with Raddus’s ship and all it might a bit of a stretch, but I think it’s a pretty well placed short comic beat to break up the action. Does a lot to boost the fun factor, I think. Surprised to see so many have such a strong negative reaction to it.

Similar feeling here - C3PO’s line ‘Scarif!? We’re going to Scarif? Why does nobody ever tell me anything, R2?’ seems quite lengthy and breaks up the flow in amongst several quick-moving shots…

Am hoping one the coming Fan Edits trims the line a little - maybe even changed to something like ‘C’mon R2, we’re going’ etc - or just have no C3PO line and keep the scene in…

I loved TFA, but RO didn’t do a whole lot for me. I enjoyed the ride, but it didn’t really resonate with me like the others. I think it’s because it’s more of a plot driven film whereas the others are character driven. I didn’t think there was anything wrong with it and it was awell made movie it’s just not my style I guess. Krennic was good though. Really it was all good, it just didn’t click or pop with me the way the originals and TFA did.

I think Rogue One may be a better movie plot wise but there’s a certain level of emotional investment that makes enjoy TFA more. There are a ton of small problems with TFA that I can just overlook because I’m invested in Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren just like with the OT.

Pretty much this. I may do a very light small trims edit of TFA After I finish my return of the Jedi edit (owhich I am actually working on I just haven’t bothered to bunk the thread because I don’t have any significant news on it because before I started actual editing I spent a long time just getting all my sources together and to match. Using telecines version of the blu ray that has redone lightsabers and blaster shots with a very subtle base color adjustment done by me, but I’m also using a few shots from the hdtv cap of the 2004 to get rid of the changed door at jabbas palace, and to get rid of the dug in jabbas palace and restore the original effect of Han thawing out. Then I also used harmys de ed to get rid of the sarlaac beak and restore Sebastian Shaw, so I had to do some adjustments to make those shots match as well. They look great on their own bit I wanted a more modern look since this is an edit so I wanted it to match the blu ray footage. Then had to sync it to the 93 mix before I started editing. Wow, sorry that was so long and off topic)

I’ve never been too too interested in ROTJ fanedits because my problems with the film are more on a fundamental level. No fanedit can fix those.

Main reason I thought Home One was already en route to Tatooine was because that was how the story group tried to justify why the Tantive IV was docked in it at Scariff (when Bail requested Leia to go off to Tatooine before Rogue One went to Scariff), but it would make sense for them to be waiting and supplying when they decided to redirect.

Personally, if they had to have C-3PO do a speaking cameo (I agree with most of you that a visual cameo on the ship would’ve done better, them on Yavin seemed somewhat forced), I would’ve placed it around Eadu, or something.

“Eadu? Why are we sending ships there, of all places?”

If only there was some way to use the shots of them on Bail’s ship in Episode III.

Erasing Bail and friend might be really tricky though.

In theater I thought tarkin looked perfect and Leah looked terrible. But when watching the blu ray I felt the opposite. Strange. Tarkins eyes and mouth look very unnatural but Leah looked fine.

In theatre I always thought Tarkin had a bit of a “Polar Express” look to him (not enough to take me out of the movie, but enough to go, “Hey, that guy looks fake,”) while Leia was weirdly on the uncanny valley (something about her nose ticked me off; her nose looked fake for some reason).

At home I still thought Tarkin looked a bit fake (though they looked like they made Krennic look a little artificial to help in blend in, or I’m losing it), but Leia didn’t seem off at all.

CGI Tarkin had a lot more screen time and a much more prominent role. The CGI characters can’t act and they don’t coordinate very tiny muscle movements in the face right. When I saw the movie twice in theaters I too thought Leia looked much better, whereas Tarkin looked fake to me, but I think that’s probably just down to her barely getting on screen.

Even then, she looked more realistic but soulless. Kinda like you were looking at a picture of a dead woman from long ago when she was very young. And I thought that before everything happened with Carrie.

But it was still better than Tarkin. He just looked like a video game character to me.

Another thought is that recreating the softer facial features of a young woman is easier for the CGI and our human eyes to accept, than the harder angular features of a gaunt old man.

To me, they both look obviously fake when talking. The movement of the lips and mouth just weren’t intricate enough or something. But I also thought both looked incredibly convincing when they were gazing into the distance just barely moving. They’re not totally lifelike in those shots, but darn close.

I actually noticed krennic looking slightly waxed out in his scenes with tarkin too.

I also think how prominent the real life actors are might actually be a factor. Tarkin had a lot of people on screen to compare himself to, while the people surrounding Leia weren’t in focus.

I also felt the same way about the AT-ACTs watching the Blu-Ray. They look great from distance shots, but there was something uncanny about them walking alongside troopers on the ground.

Can’t find this if it’s already been posted. I thought this was interesting and I caught most if not all of the cues and callbacks he discusses.

Again, I think the separation of this film from The Saga is one of my favorite things about it. I cringe for a second at the Evazon and 3PO cameos because they’re totally unnecessary. Beyond that, this is my favorite film in the franchise. By far. Last night was my tenth viewing total (three theater, seven home).

As I did with Star Wars in 1977, I’m listening to the score almost daily. Fantastic work.

Oh yeah we talked about that one. Somebody was like fuck that guy. And I was like eh maybe.

As for the whole repeat viewing and score listening sessions, I just don’t feel it. Star Wars is a perfect film. Or movie if you’re so inclined. But this is just sort of vaguely entertaining but mostly slapped together and not quite there as an average movie for me. It doesn’t have any Binary Sunset moments or even any Cantina Band type sequences.

I do. It took me a few months to let myself acknowledge it, but yes. It’s an adult take on the Star Wars universe. It’s obviously much darker and violent, but it’s also much deeper. It’s not a feel good story, but it moves me more than Star Wars.

To me, that makes perfect sense. I’m not the 15-year-old I was in 1977, so a darker, more cerebral film should move me now. As an adult, I understand the cost and seriousness of this story the same way I understood rescuing the princess and flying an X-wing when I was a kid.

I’ll go one step further and say that the prologue of Rogue One is one of my favorite parts of the film. There is a darkness and seriousness that really speaks to me. Perfect in every way; acting, cinematography, story, music, etc.

For the record; It’s possible that decades of Lucas’ tampering and suppressing the 1977 film have finally taken their toll. Truth be told, I probably threw my hands up over it 10 years ago. Lucas won. I don’t have the desire for Star Wars 77 that I once had. The fact that Rogue One is nearly free of all things Saga makes it even easier to connect.

If Disney ever releases the 1977 film properly, I’ll buy it and watch it for sure. If they don’t, that’s fine too. I have the NPR for that story.
