It’s kinda pathetic that extra features got worse in the BD era for some things. So many barebones releases or obvious money grabs that will be replaced by more extensive versions. I don’t care about 3D. Just make it worth the purchase.

His version is the theatrical.

I want to see the trailer version.

The crashed X Wing looks a tad out of scale.

Hahaha it’s not on the right layer, the whole thing is terrible

A lot of those trailer shots are just glamour shots. For instance Jyn vs Tie Fighter, Jyn in tunnel, etc

Exactly.

Not to mention earlier versions of the film were unfinished in many regards (VFX, sound mixing, score, etc.), and were likely quite a bit worse than the theatrical. Oh, and yeah, when has a studio ever released a rough cut of a film before?

Literally the only instance I can think of is Alien 3, but that’s only because Fincher wouldn’t do a director’s cut. And how much later was that?

Well, I didn’t know about that, but still they showed it at NYFF, so I don’t think the situations are very similar (I imagine that WIP probably wasn’t all that different from the theatrical, beyond being unfinished).

Beast did have a visible tattoo in the bath scene. 😉

Does the Blade Runner workprint count?

Didn’t they release an alternate version of that shitty Exorcist prequel, one with a somewhat different narrative made by a different director?

That’s a much more complicated situation, because it was shown to test audiences and was much closer to Scott’s vision than the studio influenced theatrical, so it had a history as an unauthorized director’s cut. Something like that typically wouldn’t get a release but I think it did just because the Final Cut collection was so comprehensive and it had a history with audiences.

If we ever see any early cut of Rogue One (which I doubt), it won’t be for a very long time, I think. Did we ever get to see the rough cut of Star Wars Lucas screened? Nope.

Wasn’t that where they made one film and it sucked so they remade it with someone else and released it and it sucked more so they released the initial one too?

Again, very different situation.

We got to see the black and white workprint of the cantina scene. It first appeared on the Making Magic CD-ROM in 1996.

Wow, that one truly is awful. Bodhi is floating, Jyn’s legs just look wrong, Chirrut looks to big, K2 isn’t casting a shadow.

Someone on twitter pointed out that there is an AT-AT on that dvd cover too - and not an AT-ACT, which was actually in the film.

There are still some people for whom DVD is “good enough”. There were people who would buy VHS if it was still offered. I do recall a few barking loonies on the late IMDB boards who insisted Blu Rays were a ripoff. 😉

I’m honestly confused as to why there’s even a DVD-only release these days.

I suppose the price difference? (here in the UK if a bluray is £15, then the dvd is usually around £10) - and some people aren’t too bothered about the greater picture quality and detail etc (as Silverwook says) - they just want to watch the film.

Be interesting to see a comparison on bluray to dvd sales though. And the effect on them due to increasing number of movie channels, rentals, streaming, digital downloads, many people having less money - and dodgy torrents etc.

I’ll likely buy Rogue One on dvd (even with the appalling cover 😉), and then rip it to the hard drive and watch it through the chromecast on tv - it doesn’t take up too much drive space, and I’ll have back up just in case the disc goes awry.

Sure but the missing beach narrative and the larger Forrest Whitaker plot were in most of the trailers. The latter being something that might actually still fit what they ended up with.

Huh? All we got were one liners from Whitaker in the trailers. Beach narrative was probably just a more complicated setup for the complex, which was probably deemed to add nothing to the story but time and complication.

Hello 😃

I only buy Blu-Ray if it’s something I really admire and like.

I probably have only about 20 odd Blu Rays but I have over 300 DVD’s.

I bought the exorcist on VHS the other month. Only for what is in the box though not for the actual VHS so much.

Film was toned down a bit, nothing much but it was toned down by the general look of it. And stuff changed paired down. Does not stop it from being interesting though. I think it would have just been nice to see how the tone of the film changed and stuff. I think we pretty much know a lot of what was changed now about it. It would just be nice to see the stuff.

I was going to buy Rogue One on Blu-Ray…

I, too, still mostly stick with DVDs. My budget is extremely limited, so I often can’t afford to buy BDs over their DVD counterparts. Also, you can’t really tell the difference between a BD and DVD when viewed through my TV, anyway, so there really isn’t really any impetus for me to choose BD over DVD much of the time. Had I more money to burn, matters would probably be much different.

My local Target has a bargain aisle with older Blu Ray titles ten bucks and under these days. Easier to find things than those bottomless dump bins Walmart uses.

Is that a good deal in the US? You can get BDs less than 5€ here and movies like Bond you can get 3 for 10€ etc. and newer titles go for 9,90€ or less after 6 to 12 months from the release. For example you can get a 3D BD of Batman v. Superman for about 6-7€ now. I haven’t boought a DVD for almost 10 years now.

Lots of old titles you can get for $5 on amazon or bargain bins.

“And under” makes it a good deal, yes.

9,99 for some old catalog titles isn’t a good deal for me. Anyways, back on R1.

I’ll buy R1 on rental BD when they’re through with it. Scored my TFA that way and paid only 6€ and it was like new. Now I just bought the collector’s edition for less than 15€ to get some extras. Seems to be a good plan in the future.
