The 1997 OT Special Edition Trilogy Preservation Standards Thread (* unfinished *)
Time

Firstly I would add the Dolby 2.0 soundtrack to Post 1 which is part of the same source as the 5.1 track you list.

There is another possible source that could be used right away.

Given the work done by msycamore with ANH SE that is a perfect frame by frame sync to the 2004 DVD and can actually be synced to the 2004 audio, the opposite has already been done - if it is still in circulation.

When it was discovered how bad the 2004 ANH DVD was, a DVD "appeared" with the 1997 Dolby Digital 5.1 synced to the 2004 DVD. (In theory) That track could be muxed in with the msycamore ANH project file.

Does anyone out there have this release??

This DVD includes the sparkling new 16x9 picture transfer made for the 2004 DVDs. It also includes a Dolby Digital 5.1 track, but not the error filled mix found on the current DVD. Instead, this soundtrack is the 1997 remix heard theatrically in 1997 when the film was rereleased for it’s 20th anniversary. It's single layer and the sync is perfect.

I've since seen there has been one thread started for this purpose, and I wondered, is my work actually needed now? I can still upload it of course if there is desire for it, I just want to know if it's really worth my effort?

In my opinion, your work so far is the foundation for this whole thing. Your work has every frame of ANH and it even times frame for frame with  the 2004 DVD. Your ESB has all but one frame. You have not mentioned how ESB is timed frame for frame with the 2004 DVD (where it is the same scenes) and there is no mention of RotJ.

I do not know how you have done it and know what all the frames are. The fact that you know you have one frame missing in ESB is amazing.

Once work has been completed of each film frame for frame, that could then be the SE standard.

Other work by others to improve picture quality, upscale the video, sync the DTS, Dolby 2.0 or 5.1 following that standard would all be interchangeable.

I have no idea how any of that works but people who can do such things seem to be doing a fantastic job of working with that other standard (GOUT) so I am sure they would have no trouble with an SE standard.

Of course, we do need a catchy acronym. Following that other standard, I suggest "Georges 97 Special Edition Trilogy" or G97SET.

Cheers and let's have some fun....and get something done.

Agreed and I am right behind you.........

So, what do we have so far??

msycamore with ANH and ESB sat waiting for a decent audio

with ANH perfectly synced frame wise to the 2004 NTSC DVD

none "semi-working" on a project and a link to a stunning spreadsheet

bit-perfect Laser Disc rips of the stereo and 5.1 soundtracks

STENDEC with his hybrid DVD's

The DTS CD ROMS

Details about Laser Disc and DVB preservations

and finally, some insane rantings from some talentless nobody looking defining an SE standard

and no doubt loads more......

As I have said elsewhere, I am not particularly a fan of the SE but I am a fan of Star Wars films - hence my full backing to anything that this and similar threads might produce.

it was my attempt to show my quirky British sense of humour as well as well as to see if there was any other interest in an SE standard.

Sorry, I should've understood that it was said in jest.

No worries. I really must keep my bad humour locked away in future.

Also, we have similar views of the SE as I am not a big fan. However, Star Wars films are Star Wars films and they all need to be preserved for the future in my opinion....

Info Wanted: Are the 1997 Special Edition releases preserved?
Time

......as well as read the 1997 DTS CD ROM thread which is mainly about the DTS soundtrack but also veered ever-so-slightly off-topic by discussing an SE standard in the way that the GOUT is a standard.

In short, if we had a frame for frame SE standard and video and audio projects followed that standard, any video or any audio timed to the standard would be interchangeable.

If you look at the options between various GOUT timed releases and the possibilities to customise different video to different audio, I think something comparable can be done for the SE.

I would hate to be searching Google in 10 years time and come across www.specialedition.com with Star Wars fans writing petitions to get a decent version of "the Star wars we grew up with" in the latest HD format!!

These things are 15 years old now and will probably sink without trace if something is not done soon.

On the other hand, I am not really a fan of the SE but strongly believe that it needs to be preserved in the best quality possible.

If an image is posted for comparison purposes, I will be happy to post up to 10 versions of the same image from my PAL VHS collection. For Star Wars, I have the 1982 release right through to the 1995 Executor box set as well as the ITV broadcast.

How about this image from PS78?

All the UK PAL VHS as promised.............

1982 Fullscreen

1987 Fullscreen

1988 Fullscreen

1989 Fullscreen

1991 Widescreen

1994 Fullscreen

1994 Widescreen

1995 Fullscreen

and finally as I have it to hand the 1980's UK ITV broadcast.

Maybe we should begin another thread.

Agreed.

There has been far too much Original Trilogy nonsense around here lately and I think it is about time we had some proper Special Edition discussions taking place - other than this thread about the DTS CD ROM's.

These things are 15 years old now and unless someone (us) does something they will sink without trace.....

Star Wars 1997 DTS CD-ROMs (Released)

I have just come home from a week sailing up and down fjords and I really expected this thread to have progressed somewhat.

In short, is there a use/need/desire/interest/point in taking the issue of forming a 97 SE "standard" to a thread of it's own/PM's/email??

I think there is but I am only an "ideas" person without the equipment, skills, time, talent, patience to make it a reality.

As flawed as it is, we already have an OT "standard" (GOUT) We also have two different SE "standards" with the 2004 DVD's (George's 04 Special Edition Trilogy) and the 2011 Blu-Rays (George's 11 Special Edition Trilogy).

My "idea" for the 97SE "standard" that all future SE video and audio could sync to - following current naming protocols - is named the G97SET or GSET  (George's 97 Special Edition Trilogy or George's Special Edition Trilogy).

Any future discussions on this should be outside this thread although, as I have stated previously, these DTS CD-ROMs should play an important part in any discussions that may take place.

Moving along........

What is needed is a ¨standard¨ for the SE in the same way that we now see the GOUT as a standard for the OT. That way ALL future projects could sync to that standards video and audio or AviSynth scripts could be written to convert existing transfers to that standard in the way that Darth Mallwalker has done with some earlier OT releases.

This could be LD, VHS or HD broadcasts but I believe that the only ¨true" theatrical SE source we have are these DTS tracks which would be perfect as an SE standard.

It would be interesting to see/hear how close to synchronisation the DTS are with the work done by msycamore earlier in the thread.

Of course, anything like setting an SE standard would need a new thread of which these DTS tracks should play a massive part. Imagine being able to have different languages or subtitles synced together or the audio for the hard of hearing tracks all mixed to the same source......

I downloaded the old 70mm lossless mix yesterday from usenet. But there were some files missing and I couldn't fix it with the PAR files either.

part 2,3 and 13 is missing. Does this have anything to do with the upload being old, the retention?

What provider are you using? I had a problem with Astraweb and this release a couple of months ago and am still waiting for them to tell me they have fixed it.

Good luck with that.

All you need to do is get every piece of factual information from every post on OT.com and every link ever linked to and put it in one place in a nice user-friendly searchable format.

After that, perfecting cold-fusion, time travel and light-speed travel will be a walk in the park!!

I was up for this 7 years ago and I am still up for it now if required and there is enough interest.
