Time

The Star Wars: Concept Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AWgzNfzRCk - from The DAVE School YouTube channel (5:20 mins long)

The blurb:
"A long time ago in a galaxy far far away… we might have seen a version of Star Wars that featured a Han Solo with green skin and gills, Stormtroopers with lightsabers, and a female heroine named Luka Starkiller.

Many of these anomalies can be seen in concept artist, Ralph McQuarrie’s early illustrations of the Star Wars universe. While looking back at these early paintings we can’t help but wonder what Star Wars would have been like had it remained loyal to the concept art and early drafts of the script.

The DAVE School graduating class of August and October 2017 have answered that question by bringing Ralph McQuarrie’s paintings to life in a concept trailer for what might have been… The Star Wars."

Side note:
The info presented in this video is hardly news to most people here on this forum, but this is the first time I’ve ever heard mention of the short-lived concept of Starkiller as a girl being called “Luka”. Does anyone know where they got that from, or did they just make it up?

General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread
Time

While I was looking for ESB trailers to post on the The OT Trailers/Promos Thread I came across this trailer;

The Empire Strikes Back - Scope Vivaldi Teaser (35mm)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CroqdjDv82s

Its obviously meant to evoke the original ANH teaser from 1976, but that seems more like something someone would do as a fan project. Would the general public even have known about the ANH teaser back in 1980?

Could someone verify if this is a real trailer shown in actual theaters?

Empire Strikes Back 1982 Re-release 35mm Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWLksS3wtWA - from the TheStarWarsTrilogycom YouTube channel (2 mins long)

The blurb:
“In November 1982 The Empire Strikes Back was re-released in cinemas across the US for a limited run. This trailer was captured from one of the actual 35mm film reels that was sent to cinemas around the country in the fall of 1982 to promote the film.”

The Empire Strikes Back - 1979 Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNwNXF9Y6kY - from the Official Star Wars YouTube channel (2 mins long)

The blurb:
“Watch The Empire Strikes Back theatrical trailer, which debuted in fall 1979 and gave audiences their first look at the sequel to Star Wars. In addition to a sampling of scenes taken from the entire movie, the trailer surprisingly features footage that was cut from the final film, including a kiss between Luke and Leia, C-3PO removing a warning sticker from a door in the Rebel base on Hoth, and more. Most interesting, however, is the voiceover – provided by none other than Harrison Ford himself.”

This was the highest quality version I could find online, but keep in mind that he image has been cropped.

Backup from the Official Star Wars YouTube channel. The quality on this version is much worse, but it does have the proper aspect ratio.

The blurb:
“The original teaser trailer for The Empire Strikes Back, notable for solely featuring concept art by Ralph McQuarrie.”

Time

In the same vein as the The Original Trilogy Trailers/Promos Thread (YouTube/Vimeo, etc. finds), as well as the Beyond the OT Documentaries/Making-Ofs (YouTube, Vimeo, etc. finds), I figured it made sense to start a similar thread dedicated to the Prequel Trilogy, Sequel Trilogy, Anthology films, and the various animated & live action TV series, etc.

  • When adding a link to a video, please add a title and/or description so that we don’t have to click on it to find out what it is. Any additional info would be appreciated as well, like f.ex. article links, or just a simple blurb. You can also add a photo; screenshot, poster, or simply add the YouTube thumbnail (like this).
  • Trailers/Promos for home video releases (VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, etc.) are just as valid and welcome as Theatrical trailers (provided they conform with the last point on this list).
  • No Fan-made trailers please, only videos related to official releases.
  • This thread is specifically for post OT trailers/promos, so please don’t post anything primarily dealing with just the OT here. Some trailers and promos do of course promote box-sets covering several eras of Star Wars, so it’s fine if the OT is mentioned in the trailer/promo provided the focus is on one or several of the non-OT films or series.

This one’s kind of a stretch as far as SW is concerned, but there is a short ROTJ segment and a bit if ESB scattered here and there, and it does showcase a lot of the techniques used in the OT so I figured I’d post it here anyway.
Thanks to darth-gary for sending me the link to this video.

Special Effects - 1984 documentary on SFX
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp1Y_kVL6a0 - from the Cinema Garmonbozia YouTube channel (53 mins long)

Skip to 21:15 for the segment on the use of steadicams on the ROTJ speeder chase scene, and at 34:10 they discuss sound effects and foley, briefly using ESB as an example.

I couldn’t find any other info about this documentary, not even an IMDB page, so if you know anything else about this, please let me know and I’ll update this post.

The Original Trilogy <strong>Trailers/Promos</strong> Video Thread (YouTube/Vimeo, etc. finds)
Time

Since people really liked the YouTube/Vimeo/etc. finds for Original Trilogy making-ofs, documentaries, promos, etc. thread and have already been sharing a lot of interesting OT-related trailers/promos on the The random YouTube / Vimeo etc OT video finds thread I figured it made sense to make a new thread dedicated to just trailers and promos which can also double as an index for those looking for a specific OT trailer or home video promo that they might be looking for.

  • When adding a link to a video, please add a title and/or description so that we don’t have to click on it to find out what it is. Any additional info would be appreciated as well, like f.ex. article links, or just a simple blurb. Please add a thumbnail if you can. This can be a screenshot, poster, or simply add the YouTube thumbnail (like this).

  • This thread is specifically for Original Trilogy trailers/promos, so please don’t post anything primarily or exclusively dealing with the PT, ST or other new SW materials like f.ex. The Mandalorian, or The Clone Wars cartoons (there’s a separate thread for that). Some trailers and promos do of course promote box-sets covering several eras of Star Wars, so it’s fine if other movies or content is mentioned in the trailer/promo provided the focus is primarily on one or several of the OT films.

I’ve also made a similar thread for post-OT trailers: The Beyond the OT Trailers/Promos Thread

The original Marvel Star Wars series

I did finally pick up the first Marvel Dark horse omnibus volume and plan to jump in straightaway. I almost read the new recolored versions from the library but couldn’t stand the look of them.

I’m curious, would that be one of these two?;
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars_Omnibus:_A_Long_Time_Ago…_Volume_1
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_A_Long_Time_Ago…_Volume_1:_Doomworld

The latter was my first introduction to Marvel SW, though it took me a several years before I even realized it was made by Marvel as they erased the Marvel logos from the covers and replaced all the “Stan Lee presents…” with a generic “LucasFilm presents…” I guess I technically could have googled it, but 11 year old me in 2003 didn’t know how (or that google existed). The funny thing is that the art always gave me a Marvel-vibe and I was quite surprised when I a few years later come across a picture online of one of the covers (can’t remember which) with a spider-man head in the bar-code box.

Either way I’d recommend picking up the second volume as both editions cut off right in the middle of one of the best runs (the best IMO) of the classic Marvel SW series. Though the 2010 omnibus cuts off at a more appropriate point between story arcs. The first post ANH story is IMO a bit too wacky and cartoony, but once Archie Goodwin started writing in #11 it gets really good.

Well, Palpatine got rid of the imperial senate during the events of ANH and gave power to all of the Moffs (regional governors), who were the ones who started fighting each other after ROTJ.

Thrawn was an Admiral, not a Moff.

Yes, but the post-Endor EU stories consists of so much more than just Thrawn.

Many of the feuding warlords, like f.ex. Ardus Kaine, were Moffs. Also, the term “warlord” in Legends was basically a military/governor combination, presumably so that it would make sense continuity-wise while also justifying the antagonists to be military leaders.

I get what you’re saying about how an Imperial civilian government outside the military would make sense, but ANH established that Palpatine handed political power over to the governors, who were more or less parts of the military anyway, and the EU even had characters like Ysanne Isard and Sate Pestage, who were both politicians and who both ruled the empire for a while. Pestage basically got the role the same way a vice-president might take over after a presidential assassination. The military didn’t spontaneously take over the empire in the EU, but power-hungry moffs and admirals started undermining and assassinating each other, and all the in-fighting made it easier for the Rebels to take over Coruscant and the core-worlds. The moffs and warlords then held on to their territories and fought the New Republic as well as each other for several years until eventually being unified (forcefully of course) by Natasi Daala who eventually handed over the Imperial Remnant to Gilad Pellaeon, who in turn made a treaty with the New Republic some 10 years after Endor.

And if you wish to dabble in Dark Empire territory then you could assume that this was all some grand plan by Palpatine to weed out the traitors from the loyalists, etc, etc. Though even the EU people tended to ignore this as much as possible, at least pre-ROTS, as it makes everything very convoluted.

Overall though, the larger narrative of the EU (though admittedly a fair amount of this came in the form of retcons) does make sense overall. At least in Legends the Empire didn’t just collapse in a single year after the death of Palpatine like it does in canon (though the Mandalorian seems to have retconned it somewhat).

PS. EckhartsLadder made a very succinct video summarizing the most important post-Endor factions/warlords; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmz7Jon7gTY

That’s what happened in Legends anyway, I have no clue how they’re currently explaning it. Also, didn’t the X-Wing books deal a lot with Coruscant politics?

Broom Kid said:

I know this is way beside the point but man… I just love the Ewoks. Completely unironically. I think they’re great.

It’s bizarre to me how even back in 1983-1984 (and of course, continuing all the way til now, really) people thought they were somehow a stain or a mark on Star Wars. They fit so perfectly. Guerrilla-warfare with teddy bears. That’s Star Wars as hell. The idea that they didn’t fit really doesn’t make any sense. I could see how you could make the argument, and to be honest I DID make some variations on that argument (to a lesser degree, at least) myself when I was younger and took Star Wars way too seriously as a teenager and young adult. But from here, now that I’m old and looking back from 2020? Of course they fit. They fit beautifully. I kind of wish they were used a little bit better, of course (that’s a general wish about everything Return of the Jedi, honestly, I wish it was just done a little bit better in a lot of ways) but they never felt “out of bounds” or anything.

Ditto. Not only do they make sense within the world of SW, but more importantly it works thematically as well. Youtuber E.C. Henry made a really good video summarizing the whole thing; A Defense of Ewoks

Why did they use Arriflex cameras on Return of the Jedi rather than Panavision cameras?

There definitely are child labor laws, especially for those on sets, so it’s entirely possible that maybe they did it as more of a promotional thing when they had LOTS of Ewoks shown on set.

Yeah, it seems like a really odd thing to do for any other reason. The rules vary from country to country, but anything involving children in film and TV is almost never worth the trouble.

If they used kids at all for a “practical” purpose I’d imagine that they only used them for certain shots that required more than the twenty or so Ewoks seen in the photos V.I.N.CENT posted. Though I can’t really remember any scenes that had more than those Ewoks anyway. I checked the ambush scene again just to check, and it looks like they simply showed the same twenty Ewoks over and over again to imply a much larger crowd.

TIE Fighter - short film
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN_CP4SuoTU - from the OtaKing77077 YouTube channel (7 mins long).

The blurb:
“What if there was an Empire-focussed short Star Wars animation, drawn with the crazy detail and shading of classic 80’s anime that’s all but vanished from Japan nowadays?”

(Technically based on the PC games from the 90’s, but it’s still OT related so I think it fits in this thread.)
