dvd / tv sound jumps...

Author

Just lately I've noticed (mainly on sci-fi or action films) that the sound on my tv seems to jump quite high in volume when a special effect or loud scene, yet the volume when an actor is talking is quite low in comparison.

Anyone have any ideas on how this could be corrected?

If it's just your TV, see if your DVD player has an option for dynamic compensation-that will equalize the highs and lows. Most receivers have this function as well.

you can get a surround sound setup that sounds ok for around 200 bux

Yeah, but if you want a surround setup, do it it right and build it from scratch.

As for the sound problem, it's not a problem per'se. It's the sound mix, and the dynamics of it. It's simple to change. Simply see if your tv has an auto-limiter. Usually it's marked AVLS or something similar. Most modern TVs have them. This will flatten the range. Problem is, the explosions will be about os loud as the dialogue. As such, I avoid these, as they change the feel of what you're watching. But it's the easiest way.

No suggestions, but I did want to say I know exactly what you're saying oojason. The Matrix sequels are especially a pain with this problem (Reloaded's the worst). Since I mostly watch DVDs on my computer, I simply find myself constantly readjusting the volume while I watch one of these movies. It's a pain, but it does help.

Well you don't have to "do it right" to get a good sounding surround mix. I've seen people spend 5000 bux on surround sound that sounds awesome and I’ve heard 150 dollar bookshelf surround sound setups that sound decent too. One thing I have learned over the years of home theatre is that sound is a matter of personal preference. One set of speakers will not sound good to every single person on the planet. The size and set up of a room can go a long way to making your home theatre sound and look better.
Off subject
I recently upgraded my Infocus 4800 to the 4805 (A very nice projector for the price). Right after that I was given an opportunity to get the 7200 for dirt cheap and had to have it. Now I bet if I had that 4805 in a perfect room for projection TV (IE...black walls, no light what so ever...etc.) It would perform way above and beyond what my 7200 is doing now in a room with white walls and ambient light. Well maybe not above and beyond but right up there. To some one on the street it would look just as good if not better. Now to someone like me who lives for the shit, they will notice the little differences.
Back to subject (I swear I’m almost done)
The point being that he can get really good sounding surround sound for dirt cheap. IF he is willing to take the time and set it up right. Everyone has to start somewhere when it comes to surround sound. I think my first set up was around 200 bux and it was kick ass for the time. Then I started need better and better stuff.

Hell if you never ever listen or look at better equipment you might always be happy with your set up.

Can you think about never needing or wanted better equipment.

I said the same thing when I bought my first 800 dollar reciever.

I find it best to never go into any sort of area in a store that resembles an audio or video area. I stick to the DVD section and video games.

To be honest I felt bad about posting two just to hit 100.

But I guess 6869 post wont be THAT bad of an eye sore for the thread
