Woo, I'm lucky. Here at work, they're putting all the games on our intranet TV. Looks like I'm not getting any work done.

Go Italia!

A few mates' work places are letting people watch the games during work hours - as long as they make up the couple of hours on a different day - same as leaving work an hour early for the 5pm games - just make the hours up the week after...

Germany 4, Costa Rica 2

What a great start to the World Cup. Can't remember the guy's name, but one of the German goals was cracking.

A good start indeed, but German fans should not be taken away by this score, Germany does not have a good team this year and is not expected to do much, it'll be mostly Brazil, England, Italy or Argentina. And right now Equator is beating Poland for 2 goals, surprising but not much.

there's a lot of talk saying that this will be a europe's world cup. what do you guys think?

Author

Indeed, watched both games today and see Ecuador as strong faves for the group - they'll easily overcome Costa Rica and have 6 points in the bag - the victor of Poland v Germany on Wednesday will probably take the momentum into their last game to see them through as well.

Interesting... seeing as England (should they make it through the group stage !) seem to be coming to the boil - you'd have to fancy their chances with or wihtout Roo against any of the teams that were on their respective fields today !

Famous last words - now we'll go and lose to Paraguay

8am, sitting on my own with a cup of tea watching England. Good times.

At least they won. They played well in the first half but then they sat back and a couple of times I thought it was going to be classic England - by that I mean fucking up and letting Paraguay back in. But all in all I was pretty happy with the result and I reckon we have our best chance in ages of winning it.

Yeah, I mean, if it wasn't for that own goal by Gamarra (who is playing in Brazil for many years and is considered here one of the best defense players ever), the game could have been much different. Seems to me things are going to be very balanced this year.

Two more down for me today as well - with Argentina v Ivory Coast tonight (come on Ivorians !).

Good result for England today - and superb seeing as Trinidad & Tobago held Sweden in a Herculean effort with 10 men. I have to say I've thoroughly enjoyed every match so far - long may it continue - Iran v Angola might not have the same appeal - but who knows

re England - on one hand it was great to get the result, on the other hand it was an abject display, with Sven showing his lack of bottle by pushing up Joe Cole to play off Crouch instead of bringing Walcott on - if Sven doesn't trust him (Walcott) to play ok for 30mins there wasn't much point in bringing him (so why bring Jenas and not another forward like Defoe, Johnson or Bent - instead of a poor man's Gerrard/Lampard clone?).

Unsurprisingly, Cole off Crouch did not work, and Lampard and Gerrard still look like they haven't figured out which player does what in centre midfield.

Hopefully these things'll be ironed out in the next copule of group games - because if not England may well be in trouble vs some decent...

Thought the Germany-Coast Rica game was a great opener - esp the two classy German goals. Congrats to Ecuador who played their gameplan very well and took their chances.

Really got behing the Trinidad & Tobagoans vs Sweden - god, Sweden were poor - full credit to the Caribbean side for giving their all to get a result - in spite of only having the 10 men for 45mins.

Seems the ivory Coast have enough to qualify still, despite losing narrowly to Argentina - who seemed to stop playing arunf 60mins in - should be an interesting group.

USA NEEDS to make 3 points against czech. it will put them in a much better chance when they go against italy and ghana. this first came is crucial for them to make it to the quarters. with ching getting 13 stitches, though, who knows what will happen. i'm sure LanDo will think of something.

btw, yiyf, i was doing the same thing this morning (drinking hot tea) watching the england game. felt damn good, considering i got strep.

The world cup should always be played on USA, specifically the west coast. That way, I'll always be able to watch the games during the night over here, and not too late into the night, so I can go to a pub or whatever and watch it with some friends while getting drunk. Life has gone to that point when you're always finding an excuse to get drunk.

I don't suppose that they could change the rules and play real football could they?

Real football? You wouldn't happen to be talking about that American game where they run with a somewhat egg shaped object (certianly nothing resembling a ball. Ball n. any round, or spherical, object; sphere; globe) in their hands. That odd game doesn't even employ the use of a real ball, and there is very little contact between the players feet and the thing they call a ball. In real football a bunch of guys kick around aball with theirfeet. If by "real football" this isn't what you meant then please disregard this post. Sorry.

USA will have a very hard time against Czech republic. I doubt they can win this but could head for tie. All czech players play in European major leagues and famous football clubs. Hardly any of the US boys is a regular player. Still they always had a great team spirit. Will be very interesting to watch. My bet: USA 1 : CZECH 3.

I'm really routing for USA this year, and if they can get out of the difficult group they're in it will be a great boost for 'soccer' in the US and maybe some more of the population will sit up and notice (plus I'll win 50 pounds on a bet I made before leaving England...)

I think USA could surprise a few people. They're not gonna win it by any stretch of the imagination, but any good placing that will help boost the profile of REAL football in America is a good thing in my books. It is, after all, the World's sport, whereas that handball thing they play here is limited to this country alone and nobody outside of the US gives a crap.

As for England, It would have been nice if Sven had bought Defoe along for the ride (I'm a Spurs supporter), and I think he should have played Lennon and Walcott instead of Hargreaves and Downing, but I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and say he was just taking adavantage of the 1-0 lead to test out some players and figure out his options for the more important matches.

Mexico Vs Iran is on right now but I can't watch it because ABC is sometimes overidden by the crappy local station, and this is one of those occasions. If it happens during and England game there's gonna be damage done to the TV set. Angola Vs Portugal is on ESPN later though, so at least I'll get some kind of World Cup fix today.

you should've watched the mexico/iran game on the spanish channel. plus the commentators are much more lively.

"goooooooooooooooooooooooooooool", yes , spanish commentators are very lively.

The IRAN vs. MEXICO match wasn't that bad, IRAN had its chances, and all in all I must say the competition is much stronger in all groups than ever before. Great world cup so far.

I am very curious how FRANCE will do.

um, they do play REAL FOOTBALL in Canada as well And, we do kick the ball every once and while(kickoffs, punts, fieldgoals, and the rare freekicks and dropkicks).
