Penaltys! Can't F'ing believe it. Well actually, I can.

The stress of the shootout caused me to have a pint of Guinness which, being my first drink in 18 months, caused me to go home and basically pass out, which caused me to miss the Brazil/France game. I just checked the result and I am not happy. What a shitty day.

I knew France was able to defeat Brazil, they did it before. And I knew England would have a hard time against Portugal, but the ref decided the game by taking out Rooney for nothing much. This was the best game of England and they should not have lost it.

Now everything is fine. Germany can defeat Italy, if they don't score first. Portugal will defeat France. Germany will then defeat Portugal like they always do. If Germany has to face France, I doubt Germany will win.

We're all still distraught...we could have made the semis.

The World Cup Fever has died down here now, but we're having a ticker-tape parade for our boys when they get home.

All I have to say is: Roberto Carlos and Robinho are frauds, Cafu and Ronaldo should have retired in 2002, and Parreira should have retired in 1970, when he was part of the crew of the 1970 World Cup team. Congratulations for France, a team that moves in a bizarre flow of being terrible and being good, and depends on inspired moments from its players. France played very well, above their usual game, and Brazil was, without a doubt, one of the worst teams in this world cup. This has been the last Cup for Ronaldo, Cafu, Roberto Carlos and Parreira, so things will be better in 2010.

Now, there are only two possible scenarios here. Either Portugal will face Italy on the finals and WIN this world cup - if things move as they should, OR... good old FIFA will "arrange" things so Germany wins over Frace at the finals. There's NO other scenario.

This morning I'm basically 'meh' about the whole world cup. Just don't care anymore. In a way I'd like the home side to win, but I really have no opinion.

If I was in England right now I would probably be really depressed because I'd be feeding off the emotions of the whole country, but as a lone Englishman in the ass crack of America, I'm just 'whatever'.

Don't you worry YIYF - the whole country is really like that if the barometer of being out and about in London (and that's even Oxford Street !) is anything to go by. No vilification of Rooney as there was with Beckham in 98. The kid did little wrong bar raise the hand. The whole "stamping" is moot since the ref has said that's not what he was sent off for - it was raising his hand. If that's the case (and it's alledged that Rooney will be disciplined for "violent conduct") I'd argue that even in my own Sunday league team or any competitive sport at any level - when the opposition blatantly looks to get you riled you have to be a man of huge character to be able to walk away for that. Oh, and that means the whole of the Argentine squad should be done for the same charge as well - since they were far more violent in conduct than Rooney ever was yesterday.

Just want the last games to be enjoyable in all honesty and that the best team wins, on form that should lead to a Germany v France final, with France just edging it...

I was just talking to a friend about who's fault it is England are out of the cup. The names of Rooney and Lampard were thrown out there, but in the end we agreed on Sven Goran Erikson and his barmy tactics and formations. Luckily, this world cup was Sven's swansong as England manager, and we began speculating on who would replace him, which raised a question that has bugged me ever since Sven was hired: Should a national team be allowed a foreign manager/coach? Personally I think the answer is NO. The coach should have the same nationality restrictions as the players. What do you guys think?

(you do know that Sven has been replaced already and had been before the cup started YIYF ? It's Steve McClaren - appointed in May)

I'm all for best man for the job personally. If Sven had led us to three consecutive finals - he'd be proclaimed as an honorary Englishman ! Since he didn't - it's all "the only man who can see us straight is an Englishman" well... Alf Ramsey aside: Keegan, Hoddle, Venables, Robson, Taylor, Greenwood - need I continue ?

Time
Now that you mention it, I do recall something about Sven already having a replacement, but I left England on May 7th and football news is hard to come by in the US unless you go looking, so I guess I forgot, or maybe even never found out who was taking over.

The list of England management failures you posted makes a good point, but I still think a national team should have a home-grown coach, and if the country doesn't have any decent candidates, tough shit. England aren't the only team to have a foreign coach but I don't really think it's in keeping with the national team spirit. It brings international football dangerously close to the realm of club football, where the club with the most money can buy the best players and coach and become the best team (Chelsea, Arsenal, etc). Football was always a working man's game, now it's a rich man's society.

P.S Just spoke to my Dad on the phone and he tells me Beckham has resigned as England captain. Has he resigned from international duty altogether, or just the role of captain?

P.P.S I personally think Hoddle could have taken England somewhere if he hadn't been fired over all that reincarnation stuff.

He resigned just being captain.

Roberto Carlos, from Brazil, has declared he will never play for Brazil again. I guess he was traumatized for life...

If he's declared he won't play for Brazil - can England have him ?

I dunno, I think Australia would've been doomed never to even enter another World Cup if it wasn't for coaches like Guus Hiddick. I like to call him "the Golden Guus". We all love him over here.

Now that was a great game.

Shame there had to be a winner, but glad it didn't go to penalties. Over the 120 I'd say Italy just edged it, but I think it's one of those games that will totally out-perform the final no matter who goes through tomorrow.

Strange that very often the semi in many sports will always eclipse the final. I guess there's more to lose in the final and it always comes off as edgier...

Well done Germany - I'm sure you would have taken a semi-final slot at the start of the competition...

I think Italy deserved to win. Very clever. It is a long time ago I saw Italy play that good. Still germany did great but their only chance would have been by luck.

Superb game last night - though I feel sorry for anyone losing that close to the end of extra-time (plus I love the drama of a penalty shoot-out!).

Can only hope tonight's games is as good.

A special mention about the ref last night too - he was superb - let the game flow, yet kept control of the game, and booked players when they deserved to be - without being over-officious, and seemed to ahve the respect of the players for it. Top man.

Underserved victory for France. Absolutely undeserved. fortunally Italy will beat the heck out of them on Sunday.

By the way, I was able to read Scolari lips as he yelled at the referee after the game, he said something that could be translated as "Shame on you!"

Whilst France hardly played well - I don't think you could argue that Portugal were the better team on the night.

Pretty shabby game all round, but without Barthez's typical clown antics and Saha's prime example of why he should never set foot on an International football pitch again, Portugal never threatened all game.

(I did enjoy Ronaldo's tears at the final whistle - is that wrong )

Portugal should go home hanging their heads in shame for being the biggest cheats in this tournament.
