I still watch Harmy’s over 4k77/83. Not sure why. I think I prefer the color grading in most scenes.

I can only review what i have seen. I saw 4K83 with no DNR and i was blown away. The film looked exactly how it looked when i saw it in 1985. I will never watch the new 4K remaster from Lucasfilm a second time.

The Despecialized Editions remain my go-to versions for rewatching, as I prefer the negative-scanned modern Blu-ray look, especially for watching with the Prequel and Sequel Trilogies.

I’m watching the first reel of Star Wars. 4K77 and i’m nearly speechless with how beautiful it looks.

If the rest of the film is like that i will be picking my jaw off the floor.

I cannot wait for 4K80.

I, myself, prefer Despecialized for it’s cleaner and polished look. The various 4K restorations all look incredible though; I guess I’ve never been one to watch or own a film exactly the way it was seen in a theater.

In my case, the drive-in with the little metal clip-on speaker and the reel that broke partway through isn’t anything I’d ever want to repeat. Not that the film wasn’t amazing anyway, but still.

Not sure the point of downscaling 4K77 to 720p… not exactly a fair comparison.

This is a 4K83 comparison, but upscaling Despecialized to 4K works too – but it’s still not a fair comparison.

Left is Despecialized, right is 4K83.

Projection prints simply have less fine detail than negatives and interpositives, no matter what resolution you scan them at.

I’m well aware of the quality of a projection print LOL. The point is downscaling 4K77 in the prior comparison makes it look far less sharp than it actually is, nevermind fine detail.

Honestly I prefer 4K77/4K83 over despecialized, the despecialized editions are a good effort but they’re clearly frankenstein edits and at times it really shows. They also use sources that are inherently sharpened and noise reduced.

Notice how in this frame alone how Luke’s face looks extremely waxy on the despecialized edition but far more organic on 4K83.

While it is true that 4K77 has inconsistent quality and graininess in its presentation, you got to understand how this movie was shot and made. It didn’t have as fancy filmstock like Empire or Jedi did, and all of the effects and desert scenes didn’t help things either. A lot of the inconsistencies have to do with how the movie was shot rather than the print itself.

So once again, despecialized is a good effort but I think if you want the true versions as seen in theaters back in the 70s and 80s then 4K77/4K83 are more for you.

probably because I just recently watched 4K77 I prefer that over Despecialized. But I also really love Despecialized because I saw that before 4K77. But just knowing that 4K77 is an actual release print makes love that more. I did not watch 4K83 but I skimmed through it and it also looks really good.

The blue in that scene matches the Willets Designs 70mm film cel series. Whether or not it is theatrically accurate depends on how they derived those cels.

Honestly, both are amazing offerings and no one’s really going to be missing out on anything major if they choose one over the other. Really to me, it all comes down to just a matter of how much of a purist you are for this kind of thing. As TN1 stated on their page for 4K77, some versions look cleaner, have generally better colors but this is as close to authentic as one can get to basically watching it as it appeared on theater screens whereas Despecialized is a stunning labor of love in how far it goes to reconstruct the original theatrical versions at the highest quality possible.

For me personally though, I prefer 4K77 and 4K83 and I’m most definitely gonna nab 4K80 once it’s available. To me there’s something about that theater look that clicks right with me when it comes to the OT more than a uber cleaned up polished release. Sure on the one hand that means less fine detail but I can live with that and to me personally it kind of adds to the experience. I don’t know maybe I’m a weird one but generally I like my OT to look a little more like this where it’s a bit dirty and faded, almost like an old western flick whereas the PT and ST I like more polished.
