Hello everybody!

I started this thread since it's getting VERY hard to keep up with all the 800+ different posts in the Bootleg DVD thread and I know that there is A LOT of interest in and about creating new High Bitrate DVDr versions once the DUAL LAYER DVD burners are cheaper.

I felt that we needed a seperate thread to discuss the creative ideas and the technical aspects of the creation of STAR WARS DVDr's - I do hope that we do not stray from this and let the thread become a pissing contest so Please post and respond in a POSITIVE, mature manner and in true fan fashion and form. Criticism (as in - The practice of analyzing, classifying, interpreting, or evaluating literary or other artistic works) is cool but let's keep it creative NOT insulting since not everybody can fire up Adobe Premiere Pro or Adobe Encore DVD or edit like a PRO.

So PLEASE post away and let's see what's NEXT to be created by the fans!

PS - IMHO - I think that any new DVDr set should have similar features to the Anamorphic set!

What would be the advantages of a Dual Layer vs. regular DVDr?

(Sorry, I'm stupid.)

$90? That's amazing. If that's the case, the dual-layer DVDs will be making their appearance fairly soon, I'm going to have to buy a new set, but from the impression I'm under, it sounds like all the possibilities with the dual-layering will make a second set worth it (and I'll be able to give someone else the gift of the original Star Wars cuts with my old ones--a definite plus).

Media is coming out this week or next supposedly. Around $3-5 each.

NEC is making the dual-layer burners. They're $90 all over the web. Just look.

Millhouse had a great IDEA - WHY not transfer the Original SE onto DVDr?

I do know that there are a few Chinese SE DVD sets - I cannot copy my set

The latest set was the 5 Star - BUT I know one of us can do a better job!!

Not to be a wet blanket, but Jay says no SE bootleg discussion.

Of course, the reason is b/c it's announced for DVD release anyway. And since it technically isn't the "SE", I don't know his take on it.

Cool.

No mre SE discussion - BUT If the released DVD's are that different or do have more added scenes it really is a different movie ONLY in the fact that it's been ALTERED from any known version that came before. So in my crazy mind I see it ONLY as a form of preservation of the ORIGINAL SPECIAL EDITIONS.

That being said I will end ALL discussion about The Original Special Editions

Rikter, I take it you'll be starting work on a dual-layer version of the trilogy soon, when you get the equipment, of course? You'll keep us posted on your progress, and let us know when you'll be able to offer them to us, won't you? Just checking, since the dual-layering offers so many more options.

Also, to anybody that can answer: when making the DVD version of the LD special features disc, would it be possible to add additonal features (like the the 'Star Wars to Jedi' documentary, etc.) to the dual-layer disc? I'm not that technical, so I have no idea what can be done and what can't.

You might not want to rule out the 1997 SE transfers as out of bounds yet. Somebody should get ahold of Jay following the Lucasfilm press conference (or whatever it was yesterday). TFN says they feel comfortable confirming the Hayden Christensen ghost thing and other changes like that, and I think a lot of us here would feel those changes make the September release a significantly different creature than the SEs. And it's just my opinion that the SEs should be preserved as well, even if they did screw with things. But as I said, that's just me, so we should see how others feel about it before completely ruling it out.

If someone is do dual layered DVD versions of the OT which LaserDiscs will be most likely used (or best to use) - the 1989, 1993 or 1995 (or other ?) releases.

Will there most likely be 2 differing dual layered sets - one just with the films, and one with the commentatries, priduction notes, and other stuff?

Is it most likely to be an 'anamorphic widescreen' version?

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

The 1993 Definitive Collection laserdiscs and the 1995 THX laserdiscs use the same transfer. The difference is that the '93 discs are CAV and the '95 discs are CLV. CAV is typically better. So the general opinion is that the '93 set is the best to use for a DVD transfer. However, I would also like to see a transfer done from the '89 disc since it uses a different soundtrack.

Back to the SE subject, I actually have the 5 Star SE on dual layered DVD. The quality is excellent on my modest TV, but I tried it on a 50" plasma screen and it did not perform well.

Should I capture this laserdisc and add it to the collection?

STAR WARS: The Special Widescreen Edition
• RELEASE DATE: 1989
• STUDIO: CBS/FOX
• RELEASE FORMAT: Laserdisc
• COMMENTS: The first domestic letterboxed (2.35:1) edition
• OTHER COMMENTS: This laserdisc edition does contain C-3PO's dialogue in the Death Star control room ("The tractor beam is coupled to the main reactor in seven locations. A power loss at one of the terminals will allow the ship to leave."). The film is spread over 3 sides of 2 Extended-Play CLV discs and is housed in a gatefold jacket

Like I said above, I would like to have a transfer from the '89 LD. I'm not yet equipped for capturing or I would do it myself. I do feel, however, that this would appeal to only a small group of Star Wars uber-geeks and historians like myself who revel in the slightest nuances in sound.

How often do the '89 LDs go up for sale in the US? I don't think I've ever seen one over here in the UK.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

Does anyone know what the difference in picture quality is between the Definitive Collection and the THX "Faces" collection? When it comes to making DVDs of the OT, obviously we want the highest possible picture quality going, but which is it going to be? The difinitive was remastered and in CAV, but the Faces collection was also remastered under the (at the time) new THX standard, but they're CLV.

Also, a question about different soundtracks, there's a version without 3PO's dialogue about the tractor beam?!? I had no idea, which version is that?

I currently have the Definitive edition, with corrected ESB disc, but I'm wondering if I should look into getting the faces release as well.

If you have the Definitive Collection (with the corrected ESB error), stick with it. The same master was used for this and the Faces set, but the faces set was produced in the (slightly) lower quality CLV mode.

As far as the "tractor beam" line, this was on the very first widescreen SW laserdisc released in 1989. If memory serves, this line was on the original home video version sound mix, but was not heard in theaters.

This Threepio line has always bothered based on the fact, that many non-hardcore fans such as ourselves, LOL, believe it was thrown in there in 1997 for the SE.

Now obviously the 89 LD had it, but strangely enough the first TV version I saw of SW as kid b4 that, did not have that line, and was identical to 93 Definitive release LDs.

Now I missed out seeing star wars in '77 as I wasn't born for a couple of years later. lol

Can anyone confirm whether this line is considered apart of the "original" release of the movie?

Yes, the original 1977 release contained C-3PO's line... well at least some of the prints did. I think that most people don't know or realize that in 1977 Star Wars was released with no less than 3 different sound mixes: 70mm 6-track, 35mm Dolby Stereo, and 35mm Mono. 3PO's line was definitely in the mono mix; this is a fact and I do have a bootleg tape from '77 to back this up. I am now uncertain if the line was in the Dolby Stereo mix, and I personally think it was absent from the 70mm 6-track mix. So depending on which version you saw at the theater, you may or may not have heard this line.

As you mentioned, the '89 widescreen LD has the line. It was the first, and remains the only, laserdisc of the original film to contain this line. All VHS releases between 1984 and 1992 also contain the line. The THX mix, or course, left it out.

For the best transfer from the LDs to DVD would you need proper high end equipment, or is the stuff that you guys use on with the computer good enough? It would be good if someone who worked in a studio or something could do a real high quality job.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I've got a suggestion for the dual-layered disc. How about use the video transfer of the '93 LD and have two audio tracks: 93 version and 89 version if you can get the two different transfers to synch right. Also, you could have the EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE crawl and the non-ANH crawl as an option (alternate angles, the prequel DVDs have a Spanish and French crawl as alternate angles at that time). That'd be awesome.
