The Mandalorian - a general discussion thread - * SPOILERS *

Biggs Audio Dynamite made a good point about how Disney+ won’t be going live everywhere at the same time, so it might be a good idea to use this thread to discuss the story, plot and characters of the show, and use the other thread for news regarding the show in general (production, interviews, merchandise, etc.). This way those users who can’t watch it until later won’t be spoiled but can keep up with General news about the show.

If the mods feel this thread isn’t necessary, feel free to remove it!
Otherwise, use this thread to discuss things like leaks, speculation and episode reviews.

We’re one month away!

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

Good idea on the separate topic. There have been TV series I’ve followed and been a bit behind only to accidentally have story points spoiled, some of them major.

Just a polite reminder that this is the thread to discuss episodes and events from season one of The Mandalorian in.

A lot of European countries and various other countries around the world will not have Disney+ until early 2020 - and so many members on here will not be able to watch The Mandalorian until then - and we don’t want to spoil events from the show for anyone not able to view it yet…

So please only use this thread to discuss episodes and events from the series.

Happy viewing…

Just a couple of quick thoughts before this thing airs.

I’m really liking the design for the main character’s ship, and love the way that the IG-11 droid has been realised.

But I wonder how the opening intro. for this show is going to be handled? - will it include credits for it’s featured cast during some theme music, for instance?

But whether it turns out to have a great new theme or not…I’m hoping that this show (as well as the future ones) will include this iconic blue wording, no-matter-what -

We don’t get DISNEY+ here in the U.K. until sometime next year, but from the little I’ve seen so far, I’m certainly onboard for this one.

My best guess would be every episode opens with the ‘long time ago’ title card, there’s a cold open, and then we have a title card that says “The Mandalorian.” Maybe some episodes don’t have a cold open and it goes straight from title card to title card. But I doubt we’ll see any credits until the end of the episode.

I really hope you’re right Dom. Not long now before we all find out.

Oh, and if it IS included, I hope it’s the original LARGER version of the wording I posted above, rather than the smaller font version which appeared later -

(although it would be neat if it even ended up going from larger to smaller in the same ‘receding away from us’ kind of way as the STAR WARS movie titles were done)

No title cards, it goes straight into the show, but the title The Mandalorian appears after a small intro of the show. There’s lots of sound effects and characters used from the original trilogy. I was very surprised to see a few Easter eggs. I don’t want to ruin it for the others, just DM me, I’ll tell you. It reminded me of A New Hope, Rogue One and a Western. I enjoyed the first episode, I want to see more.

Thanks for the confirmation CarboniteSolo. I’m okay with that, but have a nagging urge to add the blue wording to the start of that first episode one day. 😃

However, the show sounds like it’s off to a great start from your description…and I just hope those ‘easter eggs’ are subtle rather than obtrusive.

The Easter eggs (the ones I caught so far) are handled much better than, say, Dr. Evazan or the droids in Rogue One.

REMINDER, SPOILER THREAD!! MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW!!!

I just watched episode one and gotta say, I’m hooked! The opening scene in the bar was pretty great, but then it felt a little rough and a bit too “marvel-y” for the next few minutes (when the Mandalorian is traveling with his bounty to his ship and then in space). But then it hits its stride again quickly thereafter and just gets better as it goes.

I LOVED IG-11! His personality is perfect and the way they made him move is flipping spectacular! He moves with this jerky, “1980’s theme park animatronic” style motion; but is still quick, precise, and deadly. It’s amazingly cool to watch and puts IG-88 from ESB into a whole new perspective! Kinda sad he got his head blown apart… but I suspect he’ll be back again. There’s no way they invested that much money in his animation to have him offed in the first episode.

Also, I was pretty shocked by the revelation of the bounty. As they approached the container I asked aloud, “is it a baby?” And my wife responded, “they said it was 50 years old…”. Then we see the back of his head. I was stunned! A baby Yoda!? Cannot wait to see where this goes!

I feel like it’s important to agree on some terminology here.

I submit for your consideration: yadpole.

I like this show. Feels like action figure theater. It’s so nice to just take in a Star Wars story and not feel any pressure to do anything but enjoy it. No wondering about special effects or anything. It’s just a show! I should really just relax.

My stance on revising fan edits.

One thought I arrived at after considering why I didn’t really like the show much is that while it does feel Star Wars (makes sense for a Filoni joint), and while all that detail stuff that’s in there works quite well, the filmmaking quality feels subpar. Not even up to snuff if measured against some of the middle-of-the-road shows out there these days. Could be because how conservative it is? First-time live action director probably wasn’t the best choice to start with…

On the plus side, it’s not a Game of Thrones knock-off. No pressure is an accurate observation, but judging from the final shot that could change by the end. I am mildly interested in what they do with the little green guy(?), though.

Also, a few too many references that served no purpose - it was a bit distracting just how much they wanted to parade in front of the viewer. Maybe spread those out in the future? Work them into the script more?

Watched it at 3am. It was slow in parts but I enjoyed it. The Mando and IG banter was fun. Probably best part of the show. He very clearly dislikes droids.

A bit concerned with some of the sfx. Some of the ships and carbo frozen characters floating looked worse than the PT.

The Jedi are all but extinct.......

I think it was an alright start. Felt paradoxically like and not like Star Wars. Music could be part of it, which ironically, I think it’s probably best it doesn’t try to leech off John Williams scoring. Let it be its own thing. It threw quite a few terms/people’s names I didn’t know, which is refreshing because it’s not a reference-fest.

Has potential I’d say. We’ll see.

My theory is that if (when) he shows up again, he’ll be a good deal stranger. I can definitely see them making him kind of unhinged and weird post-getting shot in the head. Or maybe I just really want to see Taika Waititi play it that way and it’s clouding my judgement.

This show feels like a prologue, and not an actual episode. If that makes sense?

Like, whatever the next episode is, THAT’s the actual “Chapter 1”

Also, I guess this is basically Lone Wolf and Cub. I’m fine with that.

YES. I second the motion to call baby Yoda “Yadpole”.

I’ve noticed some similar thoughts to others on here, as far as light criticisms, but honestly they’re very light concerns. This is the first Star Wars live-action show ever, and it might take some time to find its stride. But like Hal said, a show that is able to just exist in the Star Wars universe and explore it through the pov of interesting characters, it’s a dream for a Star Wars fan. I feel like Favreau and Filoni want the audience to get immersed in this world and journey this character is going on, and not be too worried about the destination just yet. I really enjoy it now, but I can imagine how enamored I would be with this show if I was 12 years old again.

As far as gripes, I guess the two main things are 1) it had an unusual pace imo, definitely more like it was just the first 40 minutes of a 6-hour movie than the first episode of a season, if that makes sense. Not a bad thing, just different.
2) His first bounty was kind of taking me out of it. My dad said he felt more like a Star Trek alien than a Star Wars one. I think they wanted a funnier character that could play off of the Mandalorian’s stoicism, so I can live with it.

Random thoughts:
If I had to guess, our Mando friend was orphaned during the Clone Wars, adopted by Mandalorians and now hates droids because the Separatists destroyed his village. I’m guessing the Empire wants to use Yadpole in some sort of Force-related experiment? I’m really curious about that. I thought the Mando Forge stuff was pretty cool! The Mando lore they’re touching on is really interesting to me. This kind of stuff does make me feel like this show is targeted more towards Star Wars fans than general audiences. I also really liked Nick Nolte’s character. I wouldn’t mind if he showed up more.

I love how the Mando actually used his rifle the same way Boba used it in the holiday special cartoon (and they mentioned Life Day!). Yeah they’re “Easter eggs” but they’re references that make sense. Definitely doesn’t feel shoe-horned in, imo.

Anyway, I’m liking it so far and looking forward to see how the rest plays out. I would say Dave Filoni’s live-action directorial debut was a success!

It was alright, short episode so really just a taste. Didn’t feel anything like Star Wars to me but that’s not a bad thing. Stylistically it’s very cool.

Care to explain the joke / play on words? English is not my first language, and I’m afraid I don’t get it!

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

A tadpole is a baby frog (when it still looks like a fish). It’s a baby “Yoda” so mush the two together to get “Yadpole”

Makes you think though, that thing has been in some infant stage for 50 years! Imagine the parents that has to care for it under normal circumstances. No wonder there’s not many of these running around 😂

It felt very much like some of the better fan productions. It felt nothing like the movies. But definitely felt Star Wars to me. Just not Saga. I very much got the samurai and spaghetti western vibe and Star Wars took so much from that. I just had less of the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers vibe than Lucas instilled in the Saga.

Honestly, as I was watching this first episode, I kept thinking, “This really isn’t very good.” So, hopefully it improves over the next few episodes. It had a couple of decent moments, but I feel those were outnumbered by other scenes that were, let’s just say…lacking.

I think the best part was the introduction of IG-11 (even though they started milking the whole self-destruct joke way too often). Unfortunately, most scenes were merely mediocre, and the episode doesn’t start well with the rather clichéd and poorly done bar fight. Which is then followed by the frankly stupid monster-under-the-ice scene (it’s as if J.J. Abrams was writing this). Also, the numerous references/callbacks to things from the OT started to be a bit ridiculous (Kowakian monkey-lizards on a spit, the gatekeeper droid, handy-dandy carbon-freezing slabs, etc.).

But, since it’s Star Wars, I’ll keep watching and hoping it gets better.
