The Cowclops Transfers (a.k.a. the PCM audio DVD's, Row47 set) Info and Feedback Thread (Released) — Page 18

On my set, the subtitles as they appear on the LD are still present, and user selectable subs are availaible kind of half in the black, half in the picture area. On a 16x9 screen they are visable, but the top half of the permanent subtitles are too.

Just finished watching the new transfers. Cowclops did one hell of a nice job on these. The color and clarity are unbelievable. As always Cowclops' sound is perfect. This blows away the original transfers. I urge everyone to properly set the brightness on your tv before watching. I have read threads where people are comparing different transfers and most of their complaints could be easily addressed by properly setting the brightness level. Once I found the sweet spot in the brightness level I was blown away with these new transfers. Huge thanks to Cowclops and TR47, you guys have truly outdone yourselves.

Yet another rave from a newbie with very little technical info to back it up, I'm becoming suspicious now.

All the facts are posted earlier in the thread. If you actually bothered to read it, you wouldn't have to ask pointless, redundant questions.

Now I am really getting excited!

This "newbie" has been reading and posting in this thread for quite some time. If you had bothered to read the entire thread as I have, you would have found every possible piece of technical information you could possibley desire (often times to the point of redundancy). When a person reviews a transfer, all anyone wants to know is how the damn thing looks and sounds. They don't want to have technical information rehashed for the fifth time. This transfer looks and sounds better than any other to date. If you want to know why and how READ THE THREAD.

Just kidding. I understand what everyone is saying regarding the information being available if you look for it, but that's kind of the problem in and of itself - if you want to know one little thing, sometimes it could take an hour or more to find it buried among the threads, if it is there at all. That's why people ask. Yes it gets redundant, but that's the nature of having your project information hosted in small bits across an entire thread rather than in one concise list. Maybe someone needs to make a special thread or site that sums up just about every question that could possibly be asked (within reason) about every set - that would clear up a lot of the repetitive questioning. Rikter has a lot of the disc technical information compiled, for example, but there is a lack of clear explanation (overall, not just this set) in regards to menu setup, bonus features, easter eggs, transfer process description, menu pics, etc...

Also, it is kind of frustrating for "choosy shoppers" to have only been able to see a small handful of screenshots. Me personally, I wish I knew whether the menus have changed since the original preliminary versions were posted here a few months back. Not trying to be an ass about this at all, either - I've been watching this thread for quite some time and been an active poster the last few months - I've read several project threads start to finish, and there is a lot of junk to weed through to find the important things (which is often relative), if they are there at all.

I'd be happy to work on making an "explanatory" thread if anyone else is interested.

And I still don't know if each transfer project does a different setup for the LD bonus disc!

What is the relevance of the alien subtitles? I hear alot of people asking specific questions about them and I can't find any information in any threads as to what they are looking for. Sorry for the uninformed question, but what does the placement of the subtitles indicate?

The thing is that if the DVD´s are anamorphicly encoded with the original subtitles from the Laserdisc then those would be partly blocked on a normal 16:9 TV screen. I guess to see them properly one would have to erase them from the black bar and insert them into the picture itself, OR move the whole picture up an inch or so (not sure everybody would like that though). So that´s the reason for our questions about this, how was it handled on these new Cowclops transfers?

I agree with andy_k_250 - this new transfer could do with a detailed list of specs and it's content. Far easier to read than trawling through pages and pages for snippets. Anyone?

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

I am a member of another board that used to run into just this kind of problem. They have implemented a summary system into the message board. I don't know the technicalities of the system but it works good.

You can check it out www.fatwallet.com.

Here is a really good thread that shows what I am talking about: Fatwallet sample

Over 90 pages and all of it is summarized in the second post which is updated progressively throughout the discussion.

It is just a sample of one way we could do it on this board...

Hey Mavimao - Did you even read over the page you just posted on?

We were discussing the problem of disc specs being spread around the 22 pages and the need for a summary page so others don't keep asking the same questions over and over.

The least you could is scan up 5 posts and start reading before you start throwing down the "banned" gauntlet.

I have now included the previous post in mine for the ocularly challenged.

I agree there are a LOT of off-topic posts here, so if someone wants to do a summary/comparison, go ahead. I suggest doing it in a different thread, preferably a sticky, possibly with only approved reviews being posted to cut down on fluff posts.
Author

By default it should be cowclops or you, tr-47, who makes the summary since you both are the most knowledgeable about the project.

I would be kicking eros in the junk right now if this weren't the internet. He had no specific questions and complained that he didn't get any specific responses when all the info anybody could hope for was already in the thread. Let him stand as an example of what NOT to do when looking for help about something.

The subtitle question was pretty much already answered correctly, though I'll elaborate further since I made it so I know what I did to it.

Basically, heres what I did. The subtitles are in the black bars in the laserdisc version of the movies. When I cropped some of the black bars off to turn it into an anamorphic ratio DVD, I didn't lose any of the subtitles, and I wanted to leave the originals in so as to stick with the "Definitive Collection LD-on-DVD" motif. Since they are still fully there on the disc, you can see them just fine on any 4:3 display and probably all 16:9 digital projectors or most specifically anything that doesn't overscan the video. CRT-based 16:9 sets (projection or not) still have some overscan, however. Sooo, on these TVs you may not be able to see the subtitles at all, because erasing some of the black moved the subtitles out of the "safe-title" area as they call it. To compensate for that, I made it so you can turn on dvd-software subtitles of the same lines that will not appear in the overscan area, and in most DVDs should actually occupy the video frame itself. This way, those who can see the LD subtitles don't have to worry about anything, and those who can not see the LD subtitles can turn on the software encoded DVD subtitles. The bottom line is, if you're still using a display that overscans the video, you better hope it overscans the LD subtitles all the way or you might see a subtitle and a half. I suspect the people using analog 16:9 sets are in the minority, however. Most people probably watch on a PC monitor, a 4:3 tv, or 16:9 digital projection.

I'm thinking that each project should have it's own FAQ thread perhaps.
I know that once a thread gets over 10 pages long, stuff is bound to be asked repeatedly.

COWCLOPS AND TR47

I am sorry to add to the fluff with this post but I sat down tonight and watched the entire trilogy again with a more critical eye and I am amazed with the quality of these transfers. It is hard for me to remember how the original trilogy looked when I last saw it on the big screen, but I can say with absolutley no doubt that this is this best that they have looked since then. I will refrain from any further posts for the purpose of nothing but props and thanks, but I must say that Cowclops' technical knowledge and hard work has resulted in a final product that is in an entirely different category than all previous transfers. You guys f#*cking rule! If anyone critisizes these discs please drop me an e-mail and I will personally break his nose for you, it's the least I can do.
THANKS

Isn't that essentially what we had not too long ago? Problem was, there were so many stickies, you all but had to go to page 2 just to read new posts!

No, it isn't what we had. This suggestion is in relation to the problems with those threads (that used to be stickied), being way too long to easily find information. The suggestion is to distil that information down to very small threads without all the wandering conversation. No one has suggested new stickies yet.

No worries, Mavimao. Sorry if my post looked like an ad. This thread is really confusing for most who have not been following it.

My suggestion still stands. Check out my previous post on page 22. That website has this problem down. First the original post then a summary that is editable as more info is provided. I would suggest the ops here to check it out for some ideas.
