That’s how we roll in Austin. So proud to call her a fellow citizen. It may take a few years, but I believe we’re witnessing an actual course correction in our culture. The pushback is swift, lucid, and heard.

As much as I often see things as the sky is falling, often times in our own fandom here, there are times when I’m genuinely moved and hopeful.

Well said, Ms Swan.

These russian bots are really convenient to explain aything those days…

“I have to say that I felt George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.” - James Cameron about Episode VII.

present company excluded , was more referring to some who came out of nowhere and never posted elsewhere , the volatile shitposters , some of the volatile shit posters who are no longer around . I could be wrong though , probably am , but was just speculating .here is a real russian bot btw …https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/weapons/a22802198/russia-unveils-giant-combat-walker/

“An academic paper finds that half of criticism aimed at director Rian Johnson was politically motivated

so I assume that people who like it aren’t political about the movie ? (this must be a joke, this paper is totally ridiculous)

(I’m highly disappointed that Rian Johnson retweets this kind of paper)

That shoddy excuse for journalism is horribly biased and the sources are selectively picked and skewed to paint a narrative.

Why is “It’s The Russian Bots!” boogeyman the new excuse for deflecting criticism about anything and everything? Is it so hard to fathom that maybe there’s these crazy things called different opinions?..

There’s an argument to be made for troll brigading, but claiming it’s an international government conspiracy and using very specific twitter ‘findings’ to prove your case is hilariously moronic.

And yet not surprising in the least.

"Supporters of The Last Jedi have called these detractors out as being predominantly white males
with misogynistic views that did not care for the film’s attempts at improving representation of
women and ethnic/sexual minorities in the Star Wars franchise. "

God, what a horrible paper! You’re political (which to the writer in this paper seems to restrict itself to the definition: not a progressive), or a real fan. The entire paper screams bias, as it focusses solely on the negative response, and perceived political beliefs that may be correlated with the response of a subsection of the fan base, but completely ignores the idea, that such correlations may also exist among supporters of the film. This is important here, since the writer promotes the idea, that a fan who has a strong political affiliation essentially disqualifies him- or herself as a fan of the franchise with genuine opinions of the film. It also makes the unsupported ridiculous claim, that any tweet by a supporter of Trump, or a fan with a right wing political affiliation in general should be considered deliberate, organized political influence measures disguised as fan arguments. In other words this subsection of the fan base cannot make fan arguments, but are only able to make active political statements pushing a right wing agenda. It’s only through the filter of their political beliefs that these people are apparently able to function, and frame arguments. Therefore their opinions of the film should be seen solely through the lens of their political beliefs, which I suppose the author feels are abhorrent. Then there’s the elephant in the room that is completely ignored by the author, namely his rather bald unsupported assertion, that the tweets send to RJ are somehow representative of the opinions of the fandom as a whole. This is thinly veiled propaganda, not science.

Unfortunately mate, even with a headline of ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi Negative Buzz Amplified by Russian Trolls, Study Finds’ for the article with the link to the study paper in, some will ignore that (and this below)…

“Among the 967 tweets analyzed, 206 expressed a negative sentiment towards the film and its director, which is 21.9% or a little more than one in five fans. This number includes all negative tweets analyzed, i.e. also those who came from the 44 accounts identified as bots, sock puppet accounts and trolls."

… and instead focus on the political aspects of the study - or have a pop at Rian Johnson at even mentioning it (who has stated he doesn’t have a problem with those not liking the film; he does have a problem with the more toxic elements of ‘criticism’ - by that I think he means the racists, sexists, bots and trolls - and likely those who post death threats and announce his death too?).

Johnson himself alluded to Russian bots being behind a campaign to ‘save’ a character in TLJ too in one of the bonus material feature on TLJ blu ray - seems he may have more of an idea what is going than some.

I’ve seen a few people cast doubt as to Russian bots targeting a film - well, it evidently does happen. It’s not an excuse - just a fact, though some people seemingly have difficulty accepting the truth of such a thing. Russian bots and trolls target this very site - frequently - along many more other popular sites.

At least there is the ‘Culture, politics, and diversity in Star Wars’ thread on here to talk about the political aspects of criticisms towards the series (or parts of it).
