Looking very nice. I was hoping someone dedicated would try and tackle this!
This is a full-scale restoration/remaster of 4k77.
Full shot for shot color correction, shot for shot dust/scratches removal and
DNR/regraining. I want this to be as close as a professional remaster of the original film could look like.
no more green tint, no more deep blacks. No More Dust/Scratches

once that awful green tint and grain are stripped from the frame, it looks extremely good! after manual cleanup and cc at a higher resolution who knows how good the final result will be.
-TGWNN
An example of how good an image can be yielded if you just work hard enough to fix 4k77’s shortcomings.
no power windows, no qualifiers. pure full frame manual cc. and amazing grain reduction and regraining. not to mention the hours of manual cleanup.

Looking at each of these photos and video clips, it’s clear that you have managed to extract a lot more detail that was previously obscured. Nicely done! 😃

Some time ago Sky Dude did a 4K77 remaster, removing the grain without color correction, but because of the DNR he added, several details were lost. Will your project be more careful?

yes. he went overboard with the DNR. I’m not really gonna use that much, just to take the edge off. the correction really hides most of the grain.

Will the color correction be similar to Adywan’s work, giving the film a more modern look without sticking to the look of a Technicolor film?

It’s not modern per se, just neutral. technicolor-ish tone will remain though.

I’m currently working on posting a short sequence of full restored video, but in the meantime
I wanna explain something about the DNR I’ll be doing…
Instead of just applying a blanket layer of DNR, which will cause static grain and detail flicker.
Instead, each element of the frame has to be masked out, and DNRed separately, to minimize any detail loss.
Then, it’s color-corrected, and a thin layer of that original grain is put back in after it’s been refined.
and then you get something like this:
(the screenshot desaturates the image slightly)
Here’s a video comp:

There are still some kinks to iron out (Chewie fur problem, Dust and scratches)

Impressive work, TGWNN. Very much looking forward to this. 👍

Alright here’s the first finished sequence of TGWNN’s 4K77 BETA.
It’s in 1080p, just like the full BETA will be. The source footage is in 4K though. Just like the finished release will be. The final release will also have MAJOR Dust/scratches removal unlike this BETA, which has minor to none.
The next sequence I’ll release will be the death star escape. so watch out for that. The finished BETA will follow in a few months (this is very time consuming).

WOW. That’s hard to believe that it came from 4K77, such a clean image. Great work, man.
I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.
Exciting stuff! Thanks for the hard work!

Thanks so much. Sorry If I’m not replying here immediately. I actually started this on the other forum.
So I always check there first.

This is looking very promising! I swear someone renews my interest in the OT every year
Awesome!
One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.
Yoda: Try not, do or do not, there is no try.
Alrighty… here’s something a little different.
This is a clip I’ve been working on even before I release the first Beta clip… It’s a 6-shot section of the movie FULLY remastered, I mean Dirt/scratches, DNR masking, color correction, And in glorious 4K! This is what the Final Release will look like. Now there was an arant scratch here or there that got away, but it’s pretty damn close. This 6-shot section took me almost 2 months to finish. aswell as asking a friend to run the shots through Neat Video for me, using the noise profiles I had made. The longest shot was the one with the sand people throwing Luke on the ground because it required so much damn masking, but it wasn’t the hardest; the hardest was the first shot of R2-D2- it has an unbelievable amount of dirt and so many scratches, which where almost impossible to remove. But either way here it is (comp coming soon):

also, if you want to keep tabs on this project please visit the other forum, where I’m more active about this project. I keep forgetting to post about it here… I’m not even sure If I posted Beta clip 2 here either.
-TGWNN
Forgot To post here… Again (please just go follow this on the SWTF pleeease.
Post:
As I promised, here it is:
Besides the scratch on Tarkin’s face (which I’m currently working to find a solution for)
This will be how the final release looks. I hope this longer shot gives you an idea of the quality.

(BTW, it might seem darker than the original, which it is but that’s because the original is blown out. There are cases where I have to darken and cases where I have to make things brighter, it was the former here, but I made sure that the blacks didn’t get crushed.
Please leave any feedback or concerns, I’d like to know your thoughts so be honest.
