Magnolia Fan I recently saw your ep1 edit, even though I liked most of the changes and the reintroduced deleted scenes, I wish you had made all the alien language lines unrecognizable, because I speak Spanish and every time one of the alien character says something in Spanish it really bugs me to the point I can't continue to concentrate on watching the film.
I wish I had a Kryptonite cross, because then you could keep both Dracula AND Superman away.

Didn't someone mention making a torrent of the SPFX Making of... documentaries. I'd love to see those.

MagnoliaFan, this is as good a place as any. I really enjoyed your edits of the two PT films, especially the edited AOTC. They are wonderfully done. I finished watching the second and almost didn't realize the scenes you had cut out until I saw photos on the internet of a scene and said "hey wait, where did that scene go". Anyways, just wanted to say thanks and keep up the good work.

Maybe sometime you could just edit the prequels with ALL the footage, not to make the films better but for us to see how misguided Lucas COULD have been.

UPDATE

The Anamorphic Version has finally found it's REAL NAME

I was reading up over on the www.millenniumfalcon.com message boards and the guy that created them had commented that he did them and he posted them as the Dr. Gonzo Versions.

SO as of today the REAL name of the "Anamorphic Version" is "The Dr. Gonzo Version"

I've updated the above list...........

Hey, MagnoliaFan!

Great work on the Balance of the Force edit. Why hasn't Lucasfilm hired you yet?? Hehe.

What sort of tweaks are you making to The Clone Wars? I was planning on buying a copy of BOTF and TCW, but would you reocmmend waiting for your extra tweaks or are they just minor things and I should just buy now?

Excellent work. I can't beleve, it makes the prequels NOT suck!

I was just look at the E-bay listing, and noticed some glaring errors....

Feature an uncompressed PCM copy of the Dolby Prologic II soundtrack from the original Laser Discs. This is the clearest, crispest, nicest sound. No shoddy home-made 5.1 remix or fake DTS. Prologic II is 4-channel surround sound encoded into stereo tracks – so if you have a surround sound decoder and it’s compatible with Prologic II (it would have to be very old not to be, like more than 10 years old) then you will be able to enjoy the surround sound.

The PCM soundtrack on the LD's is not Pro-Logic II encoded! It can be Pro-Logic II decoded with the right equipment. Pro-Logic II was designed to create "5.1" sound from stereo sources, and didn't even exist until a few years ago, well after the last LD was ever pressed.

"The LaserDiscs are not anamorphic, so to make their picture anamorphic you have to add an extra line of resolution every 4 lines, which means interpolation."

That's crap as well. All you have to do is zoom in on the picture in your editing program, much like one would do with a DVD player or a digital TV. No extra lines are being created at all!

If you are going to brag about your DVD's or complain about others, at least educate yourself on the technical aspects before doing so.

MoBiUs, cut out the part with VirtualDub, demux the audio and upload it. I'm sure MagnoliaFan can use that.

Can I get a copy of this from you?

As the Cinema version IS not the same version that's on DVD?

I'll trade you from my Star Wars list

Hi all,

This is a response to MeBeJedi's post:

This is almost correct, but I want to clarify a couple of things.

The PCM soundtracks on the Laserdiscs are encoded with matrixed Dolby Surround information. Dolby Surround is a 3 channel (Left, Right, and a mono Surround track), 1980's version of surround sound. The "surround" track is encoded 90 degrees out of phase with the L and R signals with the intention that the decoder will place this info the in the rear speakers after a few ms of delay.

Dolby Pro-Logic was a (Decode-Only) way to better reproduce the surround environment by 1)extracting center channel info from the L and R signals to be put in a center speaker, and 2) "Logic Steering" a sound source (eg a TIE Fighter) into the corresponding L or R surround speakers for a slightly more realistic effect when going from front-to-back or back-to-front.

Dolby Pro-Logic II is just the current version of Pro-Logic, which takes those same matrix-encoded Dolby Surround stereo tracks, does the math (center channel extraction and more-advanced Logic Steering) and outputs 5.1 discreet channels of audio (L,C,R,LS,RS,LFE). As far as I know, PLII was not intended for Stereo sources, but rather matrix-encoded Dolby Surround sources.

I hope this clarifies rather than confuses!

Original Prologic had mono surround (no rear steering)

"This is almost correct, but I want to clarify a couple of things."

Actually, I was entirely correct. I simply didn't go into the actual encoding process.

"Original Prologic had mono surround (no rear steering)"

Exactly, which is why PL-II was created.

YES!!!!!!!!

IF the true PCM was captured based on his software ~> MeBeJedi SHOULD have been able to extract the MATRIXED mono surround track. Once this is done it's a simple process to have the software then output a TRUE unaltered Dolby PL-II version of the original PCM mono surround signal all he has done is DUPLICATE the exsisting mono track. SO we will be getting the same audio as the PCM just slight tweeked

...which is PRECISELY what I did. I even have an optical cable running between my LD player and my computer. In fact, one of the main reasons why I bought this Soyo motherboard (I put my own computer together) was because it had built-in digital/optical 5.1 recording capablities.

Of course, Rikter shall be finding this out pretty soon......

Ummm.... No steering between lr and rr maybe, but steering from front to back, back to front, that was the point of "logic steering."

From "gizmohighway.com"

With the addition of the Centre channel, the distribution of sound elements becomes clearer In addition, by installing the adaptive matrix circuit into the playback side, Pro Logic emphasises the sound directions.

I agree that the surround track was still mono, though.

..but I was incorrect about Pro-Logic II. According to the Dolby website, Pro-Logic II *IS* intended for regular ol' stereo.

BTW, hi everyone. In no way was I trying to insult anyone, or ruffle feathers, or anything like that. I'm a recording engineer and audiophile, and I was attempting to offer some insight.

Anxiously awaiting the Magnolia Fan DVDs myself,

I just need to pop in here and tell MagnoliaFan how much I have enjoyed what I have seen so far of his version of TPM. The cursing pulls me out of the film a bit, but overall the story and editing make so much more sense. I can tell that a lot of work went into the making of this edit. Thanks so much!
