Are there any new Star Wars Books coming out soon? a general book discussion thread — Page 3

Luke, Han and Leia would have been side characters or have cameo roles much like the sequel trilogy films had the books continued.

Lucasfilm would not let the characters be killed so i assume they died of old age or something, between crucible and the legacy comics series.

Luke was never going to be the main hero again. Jaina Solo was the new main character, in the cancelled Sword of the Jedi series, supporting characters would have been Jag Fel, Ben Skywalker and Allana Solo.

The new Books would have just filled in the blanks of the era between Crucible and the comics.

NJO was not exactly golden but LOTF was rubbish and FOTJ was worse.

Legacy of the Force was a bad retread of Hayden Skywalker from the prequels with Jacen Solo assuming the role.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

At first I thought the Resistance Reborn novel was going to be a young adult novel, but it actually listed as an adult novel. Which makes me think the content will be a little more substantial.

The comic run about Leia trying to recruit Mon Calamari to the Resistance sounds pretty interesting too. If you’re a Mon Calamari fan, you should definitely get into the comics. There was an arc in the Darth Vader comic about the Empire attacking Mon Calamari right after the end of the Clone Wars, then in the Star Wars run there was an arc about the planet joining the rebellion shortly after a New Hope. So those two arcs, plus this new arc, we’ll have three glimpses of Mon Calamari during each trilogy, and how this one planet played a major role in the power dynamics of the galaxy.

I hope overtime we’ll get plenty of content that takes places in this new time period. I want to spend time here, where we can see how Kylo Ren rules as Supreme Leader, fighting a resistance movement led by his own mother.

Yeah I’m excited to finally see more substantial ST era content. I imagine the floodgates will really open after TROS comes out.

On the back of Hayne’s ‘Star Wars Tie Fighter Owners Workshop Manual’ released earlier this year…

^ obligatory amazon link for info only - https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Tie-Fighter-Manual/dp/1785212230 (please support your local bookstore - or a company that pays it’s fair share of taxes and treats their employees decently)

This beauty will be available on 12th November…

The blurb:-

'After the Clone Wars, the Galactic Empire spared no expense to build a massive fleet of warships to enforce Imperial rule, intimidate defenseless worlds, and destroy all opposition. However, the Imperial Navy underestimated Rebel Alliance fighter pilots, who flew X-wing, Y-wing, A-wing, U-wing and B-wing starfighters, and whatever else they could obtain to fight their Imperial enemies. Decades later, Resistance pilots would fly next-generation versions of Rebel starfighters against the First Order.

The Rebel Starfighters Owners’ Workshop Manual presents a thorough history of the starfighters that served the Rebel Alliance and the Resistance. The history includes design origins, production, and modifications for each Rebel starfighter, and is fully illustrated with numerous photographs, schematics, exploded diagrams, and computer-generated artwork by Star Wars vehicle experts Chris Reiff and Chris Trevas. Text is by Ryder Windham, author and co-author of more than 70 Star Wars books. This Haynes Manual is the most thorough technical guide to Rebel starfighters available, and is fully authorized and approved by Lucasfilm.’

Galaxy’s Edge: Black Spire - by Delilah S. Dawson, on the 29th August.

The blurb:-

'After devastating losses at the hands of the First Order, General Leia Organa has dispatched her agents across the galaxy in search of allies, sanctuary, and firepower―and her top spy, Vi Moradi, may have just found all three, on a secluded world at the galaxy’s edge.

A planet of lush forests, precarious mountains, and towering, petrified trees, Batuu is on the furthest possible frontier of the galactic map, the last settled world before the mysterious expanse of Wild Space. The rogues, smugglers, and adventurers who eke out a living on the largest settlement on the planet, Black Spire Outpost, are here to avoid prying eyes and unnecessary complications. Vi, a Resistance spy on the run from the First Order, is hardly a welcome guest. And when a shuttle full of stormtroopers lands in her wake, determined to root her out, she has no idea where to find help.

To survive, Vi will have to seek out the good-hearted heroes hiding in a world that redefines scum and villainy. With the help of a traitorous trooper and her acerbic droid, she begins to gather a colorful band of outcasts and misfits, and embarks on a mission to spark the fire of resistance on Batuu ― before the First Order snuffs it out entirely.’

So many Star Wars book it is very confusing to find what books belong to each subject or ‘era’.
Though I look forward to more Sequel Trilogy books most.

I enjoyed the ‘From A Certain Point Of View’ book for Star Wars '77 (the better stories outnumbered and outweighed the bad for me), so hopefully the follow-up book, for The Empire Strikes Back, will also be of a high quality…

What do you think, are they worth reading? I know they contain extra information - I hear the Rise of Skywalker novel does a better job of explaining the movie than the movie itself - but, having seen the films and knowing the plot, are they still entertaining?

The only movie novelisation I’ve read is Matthew Stover’s Revenge of the Sith, which was very good. It surpasses the film in many respects.

While I’m on this thread, there are only a couple of days to go until Charles Soule’s Light of the Jedi novel releases and the reviews I’ve seen so far have all been very positive; great world-building, lovable new characters and so on. It might be a few months before I get round to reading it - I want to re-read the og Thrawn trilogy first - but I’m really looking forward to it.

I recommend Last Jedi if you can pick up a copy of the paperback cheaply, ROS doesn’t add much. To be honest i was disappointed in ROS novel like i was by force awakens.

The same problem i had with the books i had with the films too little of Luke, Han or Leia. But it was nice to get more Leia and Luke in the books how ever little there was.

'Classic Star Wars books are getting re-released for Lucasfilm’s 50th anniversary’:-

https://www.polygon.com/star-wars/22364157/star-wars-essential-legends-books-zahn-thrawn-bane

and at Del Rey’s twitter account too - https://twitter.com/DelReyStarWars/status/1377981111263973379

Lucasfilm’s 50th anniversary certainly does seem to be used as a cash-cow more than a celebration of the company and what it has achieved…

Let’s hope the authors receive their royalties for these repackaged books - unlike others.

Those books are trade paperback but other than the cover there is no new content. Exactly the same as every other mass market edition, which already exist in numerous reprintings. They are not illustrated or annotated editions with commentary.

Shatterpoint is getting an unabridged audiobook edition for the first time, that seems to be the only new content.

Sometimes I feel like tearing my hair out with all this stuff.

I would love to read all the vader comics but where do I get them all in one purchase?

It doesn’t help matters that there have been three different canon series titled simply Darth Vader. The first two (covering the immediate aftermaths of ANH and ROTS, respectively) have long since ended and should be available in compendium editions. The current series, which picks up right after ESB, is about halfway through its run now if the length of the other two are any indication. Another wrinkle is that Vaders 1 and 3 have a good deal of crossover with the other ongoing comics and I really have no idea how the print collections handle those arcs; these days I read all my comics digitally issue-by-issue.

Not sure if it’s been discussed already, but these past couple weeks I’ve been absolutely devouring the Alphabet Squadron books. I’ve taken a lengthy break from Star Wars novels recently and now that I’ve dipped back in I’m really blown away by these. The tone is similar to Rogue One, but I think that the characterization here is actually a lot stronger than in that film. I really hope they keep Alexander Freed around, after this series he’s right up there with Claudia Grey and Charles Soule for me.
