Can we get a pinned thread with perhaps one or two paragraph summaries of the main restorations/preservations and edits (what improvements were made etc.)? Let the creators perhaps make the descriptions themselves? Some of the discussion threads are now hundreds of pages long, so I think this would be a good idea, and especially helpful for new members. Thoughts?

^ Much of that is handled here: http://originaltrilogy.com/fan-edits/

^ This is certainly helpful, but I was thinking of something a little more extensive, including screenshot comparisons with the 1995 'faces" VHS, 2004 DVD, and 2006 GOUT, quotes from satisfied fans etc. Something informative and fun!

Would it be worthwhile to have a list of active and dead projects? Maybe another sticky'd post...

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

Like many here, I simply abhor the "Special Edition" changes to the Original Original Theatrical (or OOT) version of Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983)…and while I would (and have at least a half-dozen times in several different media formats) gladly purchase a retail version of OOT, a "modern" restored version from either George Lucas or (new owner) Disney does not (currently) exist.  This is my primary reason for being here on originaltrilogy.com

Moth3r's first post to this thread is a useful guide to several excellent past Star Wars Preservation efforts available here on this forum (and for an excellent historical context account, I would also highly recommend reading the "Fan Preservations" page at SaveStarWars.com).

The two or (hopefully) three current/active "modern" full-feature projects that most excite me in delivering the closest/best original 1977, 1980, and 1983 theatrical experience are (in no particular order):*

1. Harmy's "Despecialized Edition HD"

This "Despecialized Edition" draws upon a wide variety of multiple sources to create an outstanding, high definition 720p (as close as humanly possible to, but NOT quite 100% exact OOT) experience compiled from the BEST source(s) available for any given scene.  (More on this project is available from each of their respective STAR WARS, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, and RETURN OF THE JEDI threads…as well as Harmy's brief "Sources" documentary available HERE.)

2. Team Blu's "Star Wars Original Trilogy Theatrical Edition Blu-ray Set"

A quite remarkable extensively color corrected, de-jaggied, digitally cleaned high definition 720p "upscale" ENTIRELY, 100% sourced from George's Original Unaltered Theatrical (or GOUT) 2006 Bonus DVD version of the OOT.  (More on this project is available in THIS thread and in THIS post.)

3. team negative1's "star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version"

A high definition 1080p "conversion/preservation" taken from original scans "of the 35mm version of star wars from 1) spanish lpp print (6 reels) 2) english print (5 reels) + 1 partial reel".  (More on this project is available in THIS thread.)

Each of these three collaborative projects draws great strength from past and current full-feature and sub-projects by members of the originaltrillogy.com community, such as hairy_hen's "Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available]" available HERE and CatBus' "Project Threepio (Star Wars OOT subtitles)" available HERE.

My sincere gratitude goes to ALL those (past and present) responsible for helping to further advance the development and preservation of the Original Original Theatrical version of the original Star Wars trilogy!

*(IMHO, no collection would be complete without ALL THREE of the above currently "in progress" Star Wars "Fan Preservation" efforts!)

When it comes to theatrical versions, Harmy's Despecialized Editions are so much better looking than any other version that I can't believe there's any debate about it. We're not talking a small difference here; put the other versions side by side and the superiority of Harmy's picture quality sticks out like a sore thumb. I'm a fan of dark_jedi and I am eagerly keeping an eye out for his next release, but until then I don't think there's really a contest here.

As for DVD covers and labels, both Harmy and dark_jedi have very nice ones for their releases. Adywan does too for that matter.

EDIT: All that stuff above was me running my mouth when I didn't know nearly as much as I know now about the differences between different preservation projects and the source material used by them. I still love Harmy's editions, but nowadays I would speak in a more balanced way when comparing his editions to others.

So what are the actual differences between Harmy's Despecialized Editions and, say, Team Blu's GOUT upscales? I understand that they approach the problem of preserving the films in very different ways - but if you only look at the end result, are there any noticeable differences between them apart from picture/sound quality?

Excluding color-timing, there aren't many noticeable differences, especially with 2.5. With that being said, there are plenty of differences, but you have to study both versions with a magnifying glass in order to tell the difference.

One difference is that Harmy tends to leave in the new optical wipes done by Pacific Titles for the 97SE. This isn't a criticism of his amazing work, of course, it's just a fact. Most people won't notice this difference and wouldn't care if someone were to point it out to them.

It's more a matter of principle. If we're OK with things being 99.8% the same, then why not 95%? Why not 75%?

.

.

.

And then we're back at the SEs.

I watch Harmy's 2.5 and enjoy it; he did an incredible job. I suggest others do the same until Disney/LFL gets their act together.

Harmy's work is based on the 2004 HD master that was "cleaned up" by a company called Lowry Digital. The clean up process had several unwanted effects, star fields, laser bolts and natural atmospheric diffusion (e.g. smoke or fog) were identified as dirt and reduced/removed. Harmy did pretty will getting the stars and laser bolts back, but the last one is very difficult if not impossible to undo. And unfortunately, once you've seen this effect it tends to bug you.

Team Blu's project is based off the 1993 SD master used for the Def Col LD release and also the 2006 DVD. While they've done a great job getting the most out of this source, it does suffer from it's own problems - aliasing and excessive DVNR.

It makes you angry that there is no official option to watch these films in the best quality.

Of course there's the Team Negative1 effort to scan an actual film print, but well... Negative1 can be a little, erm... eccentric (he has a track record of starting threads or blogs then deleting all content, not to mention his posting style). Still, it sounds like he may have help from some other knowledgeable people in the team, so there is perhaps some hope that this will come to fruition some day.

Actually there is some legitimate debate as to whether or not the clean up by Lowry is specifically to blame for some of those losses, like the star fields. But it is a fact that the masters used for the 2004/2011 releases (and Harmy's DeEd) have those problems, whatever the cause. And it sucks that it wasn't caught and corrected (or recalled). So much for supposed "professionals."

Still, since that's the way that Lucas released his Special Editions on DVD and Blu Ray, it's reasonable to assume that that's the way the unaltered trilogy also would have looked, if he had listened to his fans and released it with a modern remaster alongside the others.

There was that "Laserman" disc that went out to people who donated to the cause.  I was one of those that received a disc but I have since added other more recent artwork found to it.  I'm not even sure of the actual size of the folder anymore.

It gets a bit tedious trying to fill separate requests of specific artwork people want although I have tried to fill some.

Maybe I'll have to sort through what I have and create an ISO for upload somewhere.

This is a project index for every Star Wars preservation and restoration, yet I see nothing about Harmy's Despecialized edition or Team Negative1's restoration anywhere in Moth3r's or _,,,^..^,,,_'s posts. This is probably confusing to more people than myself, and it would be very helpful if a running list of projects was kept active in the first post of this thread.

If Moth3r isn't interested in constantly updating a list of this sort I would volunteer to start a thread with links to the currently active and completed projects on this forum in the first post of that thread, if it would be stickied. I think it's very important to direct people, especially new members, to such a thread so that they can see what's been done before, and what's available from this community. Plus it's good to have easy access to projects that may not be updated frequently, so that we don't have to go digging through many pages of past threads to find the project we're looking for.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
