Warb’s enthusiasm might be well founded.

The sports fans of Philadelphia are known for their unique brand of bottle-throwing, Santa Claus-attacking, expletive-laced rowdiness. But is this reputation deserved? Are they actually any different from other fiery fan bases in, say, Buffalo or Oakland? I asked my colleague Rob Arthur to look at citywide crime rates, and he couldn’t find any significant uptick on game days. Then again, multiple Eagles fans are alleged to have punched horses (!?!) during these playoffs alone.

The city’s general lack of sports success over the years hasn’t helped matters. Philly teams went more than 25 years without a title, between the 1982-83 76ers’ NBA crown and the Phillies’ World Series victory in 2008. And it hasn’t been for lack of trying. In the 34 years starting in 1984 — the year after the Sixers won their title — through 2017, no other city in pro sports has underachieved more on the championship front, based on the number of actual titles won and the number we’d expect from how many teams they had in each sport.

true, although perpetuates the stereotype of Philly fans behaving badly. Yes, there are some fans that behave badly and in an unacceptable way. But there are bad fans in every city. The idea that Philly fans are particularly bad is overblown.

As for throwing snowballs at Santa:

  1. it was in 1968, 50 years ago

  2. the Eagles were having a bad season

  3. just when it looked like the Eagles would get a high draft pick and maybe improve, they started winning and and their draft prospects dropped. So they have a bad team and no high draft pick. A frustrating situation.

  4. The guy that was supposed to play Santa that day was a no-show. They pulled some guy out of the stands that was dressed as Santa. Only his costume was terrible.

put a lousy season without good draft prospects together with a lousy looking Santa and a lot of angry fans and you get people throwing snowballs at Santa.

Debating whether to watch any of this game. Daughter is sick so won’t be heading out to any parties. And that’s usually my only excuse for watching.

Also I don’t have cable or an antenna. Maybe I’ll start a YouTube tv trial. Are they carrying it?

Thanks Warb. She is over the worst (been sick for a few days) but don’t want to spread it around.

I found out the NBC sports app is streaming the game for free (no login required) so I got that going on my Roku so I can be conversant at work tomorrow.

The Patriots are getting pretty seriously booed right now.

22 to 12. If it weren’t the Eagles and/or if it weren’t the Patriots, I’d say we’re ahead. But right now, I consider this a tied game.

I nearly had a heart attack when they went for it on 4th down.

C’mon, Eagles. Finish them. Bring order to the galaxy.
