MagnoliaFan Edits: Ep I "Balance Of The Force", and Ep II "The Clone War" (Released) — Page 12

Glad you like them.

I did notice a typo on it after I uploaded it. "As you wish?" should be "As you wish."

I started with MagnoliaFan's subtitles, and went through them. When I found something I thought I should change, I looked at your version to see if it was any better. If so, I used that. If not, I came up with something new.
I decided to *not* have Jar Jar think he saved Qui Gon's life. Just seemed like a stretch to me. And when there were parts (like Sebulba and Watto) that were already subtitled, I kept them mostly the same.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

When the holidays are out of the way, I think curiosity is going to make me have to get the re-edits from Rikter, because there sounds like there's a lot of interesting stuff getting implemented into them. I'd almost do it now, but ROTK EE comes out in two weeks...

It's worth it, Galahad.

OK, I am really not getting this. Sorry, but can you tell me step by step how to get my subtitles into the DVD?

(not the same disc, mind you, but you know what I mean)

One thing I particularly like about MagnoliaFan's TCW: with the trims made to Zam, her "death morph" reads as the toxic effect of the dart: given the emaciated, sickly look of Zam at death, this works incredibly well. Will post more in depth analysis upon repeat viewings, but just received my copies from Rikter yesterday, and watched them last night, and stayed up way too late.

BTW, Jar Jar never thought he saved Qui-Gon's life.
He was arrogant and taking credit for it anyway... That's why he makes that awkward laugh toward Qui-Gon later when he tries to throw it in Qui-Gon's face. He knew he was full of it...
He is the same guy who also claims to have destroyed all the battledroids surrounding the Queen by himself, later on...

If you are using DVD-Lab Pro, there are a bunch of things I've learned that will save you time and effort.

If you drag the disc's VTS_01_1.VOB file into the assets window, it will actually demux the audio, video and subtitles for you. This will take several minutes on a full sized disc. You then drag the demuxed files back into their respective video, audio and subtitle streams in the movie window. Then, drag your new subtitle file into the assets window (lower left corner?) and from there, into the movie window into its own subtitle stream. There is a mechanism somewhere that lets you set the default stream as well. I'm forgetting it at the moment.

Then, under the "project" menu, select "compile disc" to re-author your disc.

Remuxing the disc now with four subtitle streams:
A new version that's my own "best of breed"
Hal9000's subs
MF's originals
My previous ones

PLUS an interactive menu for selecting the stream. Now that I know how to do these things, it's going to be cake.

well i just finished watching clone wars, and i watched Balance last night. Going into the movies, one thought kept coming into my mind "you cant polish a terd". But now i would say that terds in fact can be pollished. Balance, i cant believe i am writing this about TPM, is a solid film now with the circumventing of jar jar and ani's nonsense. It kept me entertained, and at some points i almost felt a connection to the characters. Clone Wars imo, wasnt as good, but still a fine effort in and of itself. I think most of the issues that i have problems with is Lucas born and unchangable, in other words Mag did the one of the best jobs possible. I suddenly dont dislike aniken near as much, and can at this point see how a women might fall for him. Anywho, i would like to give a whole hearted thank you to Magnolia Fan who ever you are. Truely a great job my friend. I now look forward to proudly displaying these films with the rest of my dvd collection, something that i would have never said about the originals.

I am greatly looking forward to the Ep. 3 Edit as well as some double layer DVD's of these.

Peace and much thanks...

Well, I've been watching TCW and waiting for BotF to finish downloading. I'm not quite through it yet, but I have two questions:

I believe, from what I've been reading, that the TCW I'm watching was made just shortly after the DVD was released, and an unreleased 2.0 of this edit is in the works. Is this correct?

Second, I'm quite interested in getting a copy of both films, and will be contacting Rikter, but want to do so once the 2.0 of TCW is released. Is there an ETA or a status on this?

Again, excellent work, MagnoliaFan. I very much like what I'm seeing.

iirc the 2.0 will be some time next year, but rik of mag could give you better info...

I just recieved AdigitalMan's new MagnoliaFan BOTF DVD which is only different in that it contains three alternate subtitle tracks along with the original.

One is his take, one is MY take, and the other is a blend of all three.

Not much to really review about, but I like it becasue it offers choice between which subtitles you want. Mine sticks more closer to the original film TPM (to an extent).

Thanks, man. I will *try* to upload it as a torrent file if I can figure out how.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I think AdigitalMan has a better DVD burner than Rikter.

the brightness is a lot better than on the DVD Rikter sent. And the color is much more vibrant and looks just like the official TPM DVD. (No offense or hurt intended, it's just I think he has better burning equipment)

That's it... THE PREQUELS ARE AWESOME NOW!

Hmmm ... The file should look the same regardless of the burner, assuming the file is the same source. Is your other version sourced from the XVid Rip instead of direct from DVD? The first time I saw this, I'd downloaded the XVid and reauthored to DVD. There was a LOT of quality loss when using the XVid source (I think the reauthored version of the movie was only about 2GB, which is WAY lower than the source) but I'd be surprised that Rik's video is any different from my own. Curious indeed.

The XVids are a great way to download stuff online just because of how much bandwidth it saves. Quality is about like VHS, which is still okay for most online applications.

I'm confused, I thought that no matter what kind of burner you are using the quality of the file is the same.

TheSessler, of course you're right. Once you've got a digital file all authored up, the burner is not a make-or-break item. I have to assume Hal 9000 is fully aware of this, but is referring to something else higher up in the production chain? Because it's certainly true that between ripping the DVD and reburning a modified version there are many steps that can potentially degrade the quality. There are no strict generational losses, but stack up too many counterproductive AviSynth or VDubMod filters, and you could be doing more harm than good.

The only burner issue I can think of that could make a quality difference would be if Hal 9000 is referring to a standalone DVD recorder, maybe? Let's hope not: that's a quick way to re-introduce generational losses and virtually guarantee an end result crappier than the source.

That's odd - DVD burners make no difference in the resulting video as all they do is burn digital data like this (01100010 01101100 01100001 01101011 01110011 01110110 01101110 00100000 01001111 01010111 01001110 01010011 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 01110010 00100000 01100001 01110011 01110011 01100101 01110011 00100000) - SO I'm not sure how it could look better as the AdigitalMan version was based on the original MagFan DVD.

Hal9000 - re your subtitles

Nice job, m8 - reading through them (even without the film playing in the background) - you seem to have done a very well rounded version. Hope that MagFan will put yours and ADigitalMan's versions in as an option on his v2.0.

Just on a really nitpicky point - I think you may have mis-spelt 'protocol' in Sub 7, and sometimes the word 'Queen' appears with a capital Q, other times it does not. (not sure if this is in the document you typed or in the film itself).

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

I think I corrected Hal's "protocal" before I remuxed. I know I did at one point, but it took me a few passes. Hal, can you confirm?

Lemme check for protocal...

It spells it as "protocol".

About the supposed quality loss... it just seems like the brightness has been lowered (that's good) and the contrast possibly been raised as well (also good).
The sound seems smoother and better equalized too. For example, on Rikter's set when Jar Jar cheers for Anakin after he won the race it cuts out the other sounds and it's all you can hear. It sounds natural and smoother in ADigitalMan's set.

I don't know, maybe I'm just going crazy.

You might be crazy...

UNLESS Magnoliafan sent a "newer" version directly to ADigitalMan ~ But I think I sent him the DVD's...

ADigitalMan - Did you alter the video in anyway?

Had already seen Balance, just saw Clone War. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I love Episode II now, I can't believe how much of a positive change that these minor alterations have made. Simply awesome.
