MagnoliaFan - are you still going to do a website or page based on your SW MFE Edits? Would love to have a comprehensive list of all your changes, and reasons why certain scenes were changed, the difficulties involved etc...

That's damn eerie...
The title I have been tossing around ever since I started on "Balance" for Ep III is "Dark Force Rising"
I just kept hesitating because of the book title...
Granted I like "Revenge of the Sith", besides the back to back "of the"s and the fact that 9 out of 10 people who I've met who heard the title ask, "What the hell is a Sith and why do they need revenge?"
They didn't even slightly recall the few throwaway lines in TPM and AotC.

Oh, and a website is still on the to "do list".

Magnolia, I just watched both your edits last night, back to back and it so vastly improved the pace and story. Wow, EP II went from a good movie to an awesome one. I will get back to you with specifics as I write them down of the edit when I come up with a throrugh list of my thoughts. But overall, a great improvement, most of my changes would be minor for the most part.

Now as for Ep III. , here's a title, Yoda at the end of EP II has an ominous look on his face and he says the Shroud of the Dark Side has fallen. And it is a zoomed-up, poignant moment leading into the credits. So, how about "The Fallen Shroud" it works very well using Yoda's/GL's own dramatic words. Further it refers specifically about it not being a "victory" as Obi-Wan alludes after winning the battle on Geonosis. It states that a presence known as Darth Sideous may have been clouding Jedi thoughts and may have control of much of the Senate...know they are becoming aware of this...the shroud falls...

How would I be able to watch the prequel edits? I would very much like to see them.

EpIII: Perhaps "Fall of the Republic"? It would be another "of the" title, but it's accurate.

miochza, as Obi-wonton says Rikter is your best bet, though MagnoliaFan (the editor) himself also posts here.

Rikter has a list of SW stuff here:-

Pagz that was pretty funny, btw, and while Revenge of the Sith sounds cool, it doesn't make much sense kind of like Phantom menace. Its like magnolia said...the sith have been elusive thus far in the story and why vengeance? Deceipt thus far may be the case...kind of alluding to my "fallen shroud" thing and dark force rising makes sense as well. But revenge of the sith does not. All of that said, Revenge of the Jedi is much cooler than Return of the jedi and does make sense for all they have lost and luke does give in somewhat to his "darker" feelings, like his father. So if you stick with Revenge of the Jedi, which I think you should, then drop the Revenge of the sith. Besides, changing all the titles will make them more yours and the fans and there is something inherently "cool" about that (especially when you change them back to their original titles or titles that make more sense than phantom menace).

I dunno, supposedly the Jedi erradicated the sith way back, and Maul does talk about the sith having their revenge on the Jedi in episode 1. Granted, a lot of the history between the sith and the jedi is only barely alluded to in the actual films, so it's understandable that people might not understand it. Still, I think revenge is a very fitting title, as the eradication of the Jedi will be the Sith's revenge for the Jedi having done the same to them a millinea ago. As for Revenge vs Return of the Jedi, I still gotta side with Gl on this one. Jedi don't take revenge, revenge is inherntly dark side. and Return can mean so many things in that film. The return of Luke Skywalker, as a Jedi. The return of Anakin from the darkside back to being a Jedi. The return of the Jedi to the galaxy (Luke being the first of the new Jedi). Personaly, I prefer Return over Revenge. I think Revenge of the Sith is a perfect compliment to Reurn of the Jedi, title wise.

I hear ya on that Pagz and respect it completely. I keep thinking of the old acting barb..."what's my motivation?" And vengeance that is ever-so briefly alluded a compelling saga title does not make. But that's me. Again it is a cool sounding title, but why not go with what's hours of the movie and more poignant? Dunno. And yeah, I know many people have said that before about Jedi's don't take vengeance but Anakin was a Jedi and joined the Dark Side defying good. Dooku did so. Luke is swayed and tempted and uses hate to fight his father. Ultimately Anakin takes vengeance on the one who manipulated his life and twisted him against his own son, the emperor. ESB and ROTJ have some dark elements to them. Even Yoda likes to get creepy with dark lines at times. So hey, that's my take. But "The Fallen Shroud" works perfectly for the Ep. III title with Yoda's dark line at the end of Ep. II saying it was not a victory, but merely that the shroud of the dark side has fallen. Having Palpatine in place and the Jedi fooled up until now.

Well, I sure know one thing I'll be changing back to the original version for my edit...

That's what I figured you'd be doing all along. Righting Lucas' wrongs.

Yessss!!! Righting Lucas' wrongs, so we can all be happy to be Star Wars fans again.

Wow, I was just going to suggest a MagnoliaFan edit of the OT in the edits thread but I was somewhat afraid of being shouted down.

I love the original Original Trilogy, which is why I'll be buying the Anamrophic versions from Rikter.

However there were some, very few, good shots inserted into the 1997SE like the blastwaves from the Deathstar explosions and the 1997 celebration theme with galaxywide celebrations at the end of ROTJ. If you do a new version of these sacred texts then I hope you include these elements. I'd probably keep Biggs darklighter in ANH as it adds to Luke's character arc.

But from the looks of the 2004DVD New Original Trilogy there are a great many horrible new changes which I hope you don't include, like Hayden's head and Temuera Morrison's woeful new Kiwi Boba Fett etc. Actually I'd hate to hear KiwiTrooper dialogue anywhere in the OT so I'd hope that you'd keep the original audio for that.

I think the newly filmed Palpatine scene in TESB could stay but I think you'd have to dirty up the hologram so it was similar to how it used to be and you'd HAVE to restore the dialogue to excise the new exposition as much as possible.

Even though CGI has come along way in the last seven years and the new ANH Jabba is a vast improvement over the old one I'm still up in the air as to whether the scene belongs in there from a narrative standpoint. On the plus side we get slightly more Boba Fett, but do we need it?

I also prefer the simplicity of the old Mos Eisley spaceport, it was more like a frontier town. But I think that the interiors of the Cantina should probably come from the NOT editions as they reportedly have added blinking and whatnot to the creature masks.

In TESB I think that the new Cloud Cityscape really opens it up and looks quite good so I'd keep that.

In ROTJ the Sarlaac was always scarier as just a hole in the ground and the 1997SE looked a little dodgy so if it looks better again in the 2004 NOT versions then I guess I could handle its inclusion.

You'd have to restore the order of Han Shoots First, that is without question.

I think you'd also have to restore TESB's "Bring My Shuttle".

Is there any way of fixing Han's alternating 'vest no vest' situation in TESB? Assuming Lucas has neglected to fix that yet again.

Would you keep the new CGI song and dance number in ROTJ or leave it with the simplicity of the loungemusicesque Max Reebo Band? Flirty Boba Fett or serious Boba Fett?

New Wampa or old Wampa?

Can we get the sandstorm scene inserted into ROTJ if it exists in a workable format?

The overall picture quality of the SE and the NOT films is vastly improved over the OT versions however I think that all new additions to the dialogue in the SE and NOT versions have sucked and should be restored. So wherever possible it would be good to use a cleaned up shot, provided it was not edited laserblast hits or whatever and keep the original dialogue tracks.

I'm definitly going to put in a bid to reserve a copy of these new MagnoliaFan edits as they really do sound like a great idea.

I'm sure you've all seen these but these sites helped to inform my opinions of the SE changes to the OT and the NOT changes to the SE.

SE Changes
NOT Changes
"The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." - Goering.

"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it." - Goebbels.

"In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." - Orwell.

Somehow I think if anyone but me had suggested tinkering with 4-6, they probably would have gotten flamed good and proper, especially after the SEs and 2004 version.
I think there's just a certain faith that I know what I'm doing.
I'll just say that I have looked into pretty much everything on your list below and a lot of other little stuff.
I kind of see it as, I'm going to touch up the OT here and there subtly with a fine chisel...
LFL went at them with a jackhammer.

I'd be a hypocrite if I considerred the MagnoliaFan edits to be my "true" versions of episodes I and II. But I'd sure be interested in seeing them.

Heck, a DVD quality of a 'Phantom Edit' type deal where they are edited by someone wish similar opininons like me just might be my new official version.
My download of The Phantom Edit was taken from VHS, so it looks like crap. So i'm excited about this whenever the torrent is up.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Yeah, most people would get flamed for changing the OT around, but there are some fine points that most would like to see. I was reading the latest SW insider and Mark Hamill said that he really wished his intro scene where he runs to the bar after watching the sky and seeing a war and gets up with Biggs was still in the movie. It'd be great if we could get polished up lost footage to at least have the option. Magnolia does amazing work and I've noticed so many small changes (some minute) that all add up to a better movie. If you've seen I and II which was a bad movie and decent movie made into a good movie and a great movie by Magnolia, then I am sure he will polish great movies into perfect ones. No joke, have faith, he's that good.

As I eagerly anticipate the arrival of my copies...

The only title I really despise is "Attack of the Clones." If I had my way, Episode II would have been "Dark Force Rising," referring to the Seprartist Movement, the Clone Army, and of course, the Sith. AotC is just a HORRIBLE title that in no way conveys ANYTHING about the movie.

"A New Hope" leaves something to be desired, but understandbaly so as Lucas just kind of tacked on a random title to "Star Wars." Does anyone know where ANH originally came from? And don't tell me he had it planned all along. As for "The Hidden Fortress," for your purposes, MagnoliaFan, it fits perfectly.

But I think if you're to continue your re-editing endevours, you should re-name ALL the films just to give them your own staple, you know?
Author
Time
I personally am leaning toward "Dark Force Rising" as the title of Episode III.

I lean toward "The Hidden Fortress" because the rebel base seems to be the central element of EP IV. The Imperials seek out the rebels Hidden Fortress so obsessively that they even allow Luke Han and Leia to safely deliver the Death Star plans to the rebellion, just so that they may find the base.
They could have stopped them from ever escaping the DS and it all would have ended right there, but as Tarkin said, they took "an awful risk" all to find the Hidden Fortress and their consequences were disastrous.

The only one that may not get retitled is ESB and that is because of A) my love of the title, and infinitely moreso B) I haven't heard a single great alternate title for ESB, nor have I thought of one myself.

So Magnolian fan, have you decided exactly what modifications you will be doing to the OT?

Do you have a checklist of sorts? Will you be splicing some parts of the SE into the OT? What source will you be using for the OT? Sounding very cool whatever your doing!

I'm still on the fence in regards to "The Hidden Fotress", it just seems to me too directly derivitive of Kurosawa, and as I mentioned before, it's refer to a specific tangible thing which while a major plot point, doesn't really embody the film. That's just my opinion though. As for "Dark Force Rising" over "Revenge of the Sith" well... I'll never be able to divorce Dark Force Rising from the thrawn novel. Nor do I think Revenge of the Sith is a bad title. The arguement that people don't know who or what the sith are holds true for the PT as it stands now, but from the endless discussions we've been having about your edits and plans, I'd say your final versions will go a long way towards eradicating that ignorance on the part of the audience, in which case, there really wouldn't be any need to change the title. Also, I never truly liked the title "Dark Force Rising" for the novel, Always sounded kind of hokey to me.

For me, my titling Scheme would flow thus:

I: Balance of the Force
II: The Clone War
III: Revenge of the Sith
IV: The Flame of Rebellion
V: The Empire Strikes Back
VI: Return of the Jedi

that's just me though, like I always say, these are your edits, you gotta do what feels right to you.

The only one I'd change is Ep2....and that's cause I hated "Attack of the Clones" It is very corny, and very uninspired, and it's the only title I do not like.

The title I would have given it is "The Rising Shadow". It's a title that has several meanings and does fit the action of the movie. The Rising Shadow of War that is mentioned in the opening crawl. The Rising Shadow of the threat on Padme's life. The Rising Shadow the Darkside within Anakin and most importantly the Rising Shadow the Palpatine's hold on the Repbulic that will lead us down the path to the Empire. It also has a very "Old Serial" feel about it and i just think it would fit the movie better then AOTCs.

isnt dark force rising supposed to be episode 8, i thought the thrawn novels were supposed to finish things up?
