Kevin Smith question

I recently saw in a post that this board is anti-Kevin Smith (though, I then saw a few people say that they weren't). He's a big fan and totally cool with me.

Anyway, I've also seen on Rik's descriptions of MagnoliaFan's edit of AotC that it was supposedly edited by Kevin Smith.
Where did *this* come from?

This theory has been out there for a long time... Smith is believed to have been involved in the creation of the Phantom Re-Edit (not the Phantom Edit, the Re-Edit ) as well as the new fan based version of Attach of the Clones.

Kevin actually admitted to owning a copy of the "Phantom Re-Edit" and he is known to be a huge Star Wars fan and has access to all the equipment needed to something like the "Re-Edit". He has been asked if he was involved but he will neither confirm or deny... he just smiles.

Whether Smith actually did have a hand in these, noone knows but it is cool to think that he did.

Anyone with more concrete information please chime in... I would love to know more about this as well

"not the Phantom Edit, the Re-Edit"

but then, would that be "1.1" or magnoliafan's? in the description that rik did, smith was mentioned, but it was for magnoliafan's Balance of the Force (phantom - episode 1).

The MagnoliaFan "Balance of the Force" is also known as the "Re-Edit".

Whether or not MagnoliaFan is actually Kevin Smith remains to be seen... I'm new to this board so I have no idea... might just be a big fan of the "Jay and Silent Bob" flick where there was a guy on a discussion board named "MagnoliaFan".

Like the number of licks it takes to get the the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop, we may never know

Rik, Magnolia... want to chime in..... or do we really want to spoil that mystery?

Back after TPM came out, a new version of the movie started circulating on video and on the web. It was known as The Phantom Edit because this guy, whose identity remained a complete mystery (hence "Phantom"), took all the complaints about TPM and reversed them, per se. He edited out almost all the scenes with Jar Jar, spruced up some fights, eliminated a lot of the infantile comments by Jake Lloyd, etc. I never saw TPE, but I heard the guy did a spectacular job. There was a lot of speculation as to who the Phantom Editor was, including speculation that it was Kevin Smith. But the actual guy started up a website and shot down all the rumors as to his identity. I think it has since been discovered who he really is, but I don't know it offhand.

I don't think this board is anti-Kevin Smith. If it is then I've never noticed it (wouldn't be too difficult tho. lol).

The excellent MagnoliaFan's 'Balance Of The Force' is NOT not also known as the 'Re-Edit' - they are two seperate films.

I didn't know this board was anti-Kevin Smith... I think Kevin Smith is awesome. In fact, if MagnoliaFan is Kevin Smith, that would be the coolest thing ever... but for some reason, I doubt it. I would think Kevin Smith would be to busy to make any kind of "edit". I mean, he has Comic Book stores to run, movies to write and interviews to do.

By the way, I'm a little confused as to how these edits work... I dislike Jar Jar as much as everyone else, but if you took out almost every scene with him in it, wouldn't you be missing, like... half the movie? Or is the scene left and Jar Jar just edited out?

"wouldn't you be missing, like... half the movie?"

LOL! Not the good half.

rotflmao!!!! hahahahahahaha. A good half, dang. Oh man. I am busting a gut here. Dear God I wish we could literally edit Jar-Jar out of those scene with the film intact, but that would require incredible interprolation beyond the like of anything we have or getting a hold of the film pre-CG addition which George Lucas would probably not lend to our cause. Just a guess. Though he seems very flexible on edits, piracy and doing things different than he wants them. Episode I sucks so bad with Jar-Jar and the "WEESSAA FREE " thing in ROTJ now OMG. Stop the madness. I cringe thinking of Jar-Jar. That cannonball he does in the lake. All of his scenes, his 3 stooges actions, his annoying voices, the words he says.........AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I hate him. HATE HIM. Look I started s ohappy and now I am mad. Oh well.
16 years I wait and this is what I get???

Well, at least MagnoliaFan's version "Balance of the Force" edits out a lot of the stupid Jar Jar scenes and replaces his voice with alien language and subtitles that make him look a little more intelligent.... Gungans too

Someone correct me if I am wrong... isn't MagnoliaFan's version just the "Re-Edit" with deleted scenes from the DVD mixed in and some additional changes?

I would sure as hell hope it's not anti-KS or I've been in the wrong place for the last year and a half. And I agree that I think he's too busy to do any of this stuff. However, some of his fellow Askewers (like Ming) would likely have the time to do it. Anything's a possibility. Hey, the name MagnoliaFan works, too, if you know your J&SBSB references.

Yes, Balance is totally different.

To be frank, I didn't really think the "Phantom Edit" really helped the movie much. They just cut stuff out and that was it.

Balance of the Force cuts and trims little tiny things that you might not even notice at first, and even adds interesting things to it as well.

The Phantom Menace = embarrasing
Balance of the Force = what *i* would bring to a party, in place of TPM

Hehe.

My stance on revising fan edits.

as far as balance goes, i really like the political spin on it. not goofy politics like adding the name "newt gunray"... yeah subtle. but making it a (more) class conscious piece. i guess it isnt politics, but an age-old struggle of the oppressed vs. the oppressors. which is what star wars was all about, for me. magnoliafan's Balance bring balance to the saga.

Since we are talking about Kevin Smith, why wasn't he in the DVD Feature about directors influenced by Star Wars? He makes so many references to the films along with a film based (somewhat) on making a Star Wars-esque film, that I would have thought him a lock for that feature. Instead, we get Ridley Scott, who is a great director in his own right, but really only had his point of view 'changed' for ALIEN, not inspired to take said career path.

Blah.

I think there is a little confusion on what I have been calling the "Re-Edit" in previous posts and what people on this board think "re-edit" means. When the so-called "Phantom Editor" released the first fan edited version of Phantom Menace it was called "The Phantom Edit". This version included no additional scenes, or dialogue, it just cut out the crap. At this time a "Phantom Edit" discussion forum was created. Through this "Phantom Edit" discussion forum everyone discussed this version as well as a version known at the time to be the "Re-Edit". Where the "Phantom Edit" simply cut scenes, the "Re-Edit" changed dialogue, and even introduced a new language for the Gungans with English subtitles that made them and Jar Jar appear to actually be intelligent.

I was just looking through the "Edits" thread and noticed that this version is listed as:

Star Wars: The Phantom Edit 1.2 - The EAST COAST version

NOTE: Kevin Smith lives on the "East Coast"

The problem with this version was that while the "Phantom Edit" could be found just about anywhere.... hell, it was handed out in AVI form on the streets and eventually uploaded all over the internet, however, the "Re-Edit" or "East Coast" version was much more hard to find. I can't say I have done exhaustive searches but I occasionally search through my favorite haunts (eBay, P2P, etc) to see if I can find this version but alas, it is nowhere to be found. I went to my cousin's wedding a month ago and her husband told me he too was in search of this version but alas had never found it. I guess since back in the days everyone just called this the "Re-Edit" and I had never really heard it called the "East Coast" version that could have hampered my searches.

As you can see by the review in Rikter's "Edits" thread, this "East Coast" version is very hard to find in any format, even VHS.

I point this out because when I mention "Re-Edit" I see posts where it appears that people believe I am talking about the "Phantom Edit"... okay, sorry... I mean the "East Coast" version... now we're on the same page

Since I have never seen the "East Coast" version, I wonder of those of us out there who have seen it, is the Gungan language the same there as in MagnoliaFan's "Balance of the Force"?

I know MagnoliaFan has added in deleted scenes from the bonus featurs on the "official" DVD but many of his changes sound like what was discussed to be in the "East Coast" version back in the day.

Anybody want to chime in on the similarities?

BTW, I personally feel that Kevin Smith did create the "East Coast" version and MagnoliaFan may either be (A) Kevin Smith, (B) a friend of Kevin Smith or (C) a big Kevin Smith fan.
