I just got the dvds and its obvious you guys are overeacting...

the videos look great and the modifications arnt as bad as you guys say...

one thing pisses me off though... its those crappy digitaly made monsters... FOR GOD SAKE TAKE THEM OUT

I believe most people her think ANY changes are the work of the Devil himself (I'm not so extreme but I do find the ANH and ROTJ DVDs unwatchable).

SerVente - the changing colours of the lightsabres didn't annoy you - afterall they've had years to get it right and couldn't even do it for the dvd release?

or the boxes surrounding the TIE Fighters after the Mill Falcon's escape from the Death Star?

the different shading between shots of the same screen?


For some people not only was it disappointing not to get the Original Original Trilogy on dvd, but the effects were not much better than those done back in the day.

I belive it's not a question of it being better or worse, it's a question of preserving the original films. Let's say that MGM decided to "computer-colorize" the first scenes in Wizard of Oz, now, wouldn't it be horrible? Yet, for some reason, some people would like it... Now let's say they also add some CGI to the film, and replace the tin man with a CGI character voiced by Tom Hanks. See what I mean?

I'm having a similar experience as SerVente. I got the DVD set on release day in September, but I saved them for Christmas. I'm just now starting to actually watch them. I've gone through ANH, and I have no real complaints. The color is beautiful, the new little bits of dialogue (the Sandcrawler stops at Owen's farm; C-3PO: "We've stopped!") mix right in, and the new sounds (Obi Wan scares away the Sandpeople) are fine. Different, but certainly not bad at all. The new visual effects enhance things nicely, and are mostly seamless. Even the shootout between Han and Greedo works now. Only thing that feels a little out of place is the approach into Mos Eisley. The little droid taunting the bigger one as the landspeeder goes by in the background is rather embarrassing, but whatever. Doesn't have to be perfect. I suppose there were silly droid antics in the original, too.

Han's confrontation with Jabba in Docking Bay 94 doesn't really work, though. Jabba looks fine, and I have no problem with the brief appearance by Boba Fett. Sure, it's an obvious wink to the fans, but so what? Doesn't detract from anything. But there are reasons why certain scenes are cut. Directors are always talking about scenes that were good, but even though they loved them, they still chose to remove them because they weren't essential, and repeated information that was given somewhere else. It's already been pointed out how Han's line about being "boarded sometimes" during the Greedo scene was lifted directly from the Jabba scene. Exactly the same recording. Plus, as another pointed out, that whole sequence diminishes the impact of the initial unveiling of the Millennium Falcon when Luke, Obi Wan, and the droids arrive.

I remember people talking about the strange shifts in audio during the scene where Tarkin destroys Alderaan. I heard them, too, but I attribute those possibly to original on-stage recordings vs. in-studio re-recordings. That's one thing they have yet to master, it would seem--making the two sound the same. I can usually tell when there's a change between original audio and re-recorded audio. The two are often distinct. There were other, similar shifts in audio clarity. Perhaps they were just more noticeable in that particular scene because there was only minor musical accompaniment and little else. I'm not saying that's what the problem is; I'm just saying it could be.

Obi Wan's lightsaber still had lighting issues. The color changes don't really bother me. What gets me more is how you could still see the terribly fake-looking saber during the duel with Vader. There's a moment toward the end when his saber clashes relatively calmly against Vader's twice; the motion almost looks desperate on his part. Right then you can see what appears to be the prop Alec Guiness used. Originally, there were no lightsaber effects added. Now there is a blue glow, but it doesn't hide the prop. (See the images below.) I'm surprised they didn't do a more effective job. For some reason I was expecting the lightsaber sound effects to be as powerful as those of the prequels. Guess I thought they were going to re-record them or something. That was a bit of a letdown, but oh well.





All things considered, I was actually surprised by how close this release of ANH was to the way I remember it growing up. I'm noticing that certain changes identified by message board posters aren't even there, which is interesting. Overall, Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope looks and sounds great.

TESB is next, and I'm looking forward to it.

Isn't so bad, maybe... but someone at fox or Lucasfilm should have detected the screw-ups and done soemthing about them. There's no reason for the saber to have been green in the Falcon Training scece. Some one should have noticed that and had it corrected.

Plus ANH is way too dark, so much that some scenes all you can see are bright objects. Maybe I exaggerate a little, but the problem is there. ESB looks fine, as far as I could tell, and I've still yet to watch all of RotJ.

There are in fact so many video errors IMO. So many shots that look right in previous releases, but are now colorless or over-saturated. I also noticed many more matte lines than before, but it's not them I worry about. It's the now core-less, mis-colored lightsabers. Why must they be so messed up?? Why???

Well, it's impossible to deliver a DVD and please everybody, there's always someone who will not agree. And we're talking about Star Wars, the most "dissecated" movie of all time, with every inch of every photogram inspected by the fans.

Well, its easy enough to go in and remove the matte lines and fix the sabres, you can do it to your own DVD set and reburn it if that is all that worries you about it. Its a starightforward job and would only take a few days of messing about.
Unfortunately, its a lot more than that which causes them to be unwatchable for me.

I could live with a lot of the changes, its the cringeworthy editions that just wreck my enjoment of the movie.
The Jabba scene in ANH is just awful and doesn't work and doesn't help the flow of the film, the comedic CG bits are just awful too, and the ghost replacement at the end of Jedi is ridiculous. I find Bobbas new voice jarring, but that is probably more so for Aussie and Kiwis, it just seems to weird having an instantly recognisable( to us) NZ accent coming from Bobba fett, it would be like the voice of Casey Cason suddenly coming out of C3PO for you American types

If he had released it without the comedy bits, without the new Jabba scenes, the dance numbers, endings and voices, I honestly wouldn't have minded that much. The new CG battle scenes don't bother me *that much* and some of the other stuff just washes past if you are not looking for it.
Its the things that forcefully jar me out of the movie that I hate.

You know what we need to really get our point across...

enough money for a Super Bowl commercial. There's enough skilled people her to make a decent TV commercial...all that would be needed then is the money to air it, and there is no bigger venue for a US commercial than the Super Bowl.

Uh no we can't do that, because they don't air "issue" ads. The "TV turnoff week" ad and the "Buy Nothing Day" ads are always rejected, so would our "Original Trilogy Now" ad.

The special edition of ANH is tolerable, even though though Obi-Wan's "lightsaber twig" shot is still unfixed and the CGI Jabba doesn't match the puppet Jabba from ROTJ in terms of size. I'm surprised Lucas didn't try to insert CGI versions of Darth Vader and Obi-Wan in order to make the fight longer and more exciting for all the 14 year olds out there.

What I don't like is that he redubbbed Boba Fett (and I'm not even a fan of Boba Fett), replaced the Clive Revill Emperor from ESB with the Ian McDiarmid Emperor (whom I always found to be rather ineffectual, even when I was a kid) and that he replaced the late Sebastian Shaw ghost of Anakin with Hayden Christensen as the ghost of Anakin. This is very disrespectful towards the original actors, which is somewhat ironic considering that the use of Sebastian Shaw could be viewed as disrespectful towards David Prowse, who wore the Darth Vader costume.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

He wasn't exactly a..."camera friendly"...kinda guy that could be seen as Darth Vader either.

I bought the DVDs when they were released but then held back watching them till Christmas. At the time I bought them, I thought they were the ORIGINAL TRILOGY, but between the purchase and Christmas, the bad news that they were the super duper special editions mark 2 was broken to me by a friend. I dreaded what I would see as I inserted the first disk and.....They weren't as bad as I feared. I welcome the remastered colour and picture quality, I can live with the CGI background changes, I even don't mind the new emperor in ESB and Hayden Christensen's ghost. I can deal with (but can't excuse) the shoddy job they've done with the lightsabres and the boxes around the TIE Fighters etc - anything that I could fix on my home PC should have been the first thing they sorted out, but it doesn't ruin the movie for me so I can let it slide. I can even accept the greedo/Han Solo encounter (I just pretend that it's still the original one, with Han coldly blowing Greedo away).

But, and it's a humungous But...

The Jabba Scene in ANH just HAS to go. Not only does Han stepping on his tail look sh*t, it also takes away from Jabba's menace. It was also great how in the originals this guy Jabba was mentioned in the first 2 movies and unveiled in the third - what a build up. Oh yeah, plus it looks crap.

The CGI Max Rebo band - What the hell is that??!! Embarrasing, irritating, pointless.

On the whole I would say that the special editions are bearable, and they do in fact tie in with the prequels, which, I hate to admit, actually lift the originals to a new level - Vader's redemption is now all the more meaningful and deep, I now look at Obi Wan as an old guy who was a total badass in his day and has seen a lot of action before winding up on Tatooine, and the same goes for Yoda. The characters I loved are now more 3 dimensional and as a result I love them more. However, FCUK the Jabba scene and FCUK Max Rebo and his band. If Anything, couldn't they have just left the original actor talking to Han instead of replacing him with a lame CGI Jabba, and do some CGI magic to their mouths to accomodate a bit more dialogue explaining that he is one of Jabba's debt collectors or henchmen sent to pay Han a visit - that way we would still get a peek of Boba Fett in ANH, and a bigger mention of Jabba before his unveiling in Jedi, but not have to endure the undersized cringeworthy Hutt (Han Ma Bookiii - Oh shut up..)

The box set should have had both versions, the original and the special editions, or 2 boxes and we have the choice to buy whichever we want (I would get both).

And as for the packaging...Sheesh...What is this Photoshop crap? there is a wealth of great 70s and 80s painted artwork to use in a package like this. Even the 1997 Special Edition posters by Drew Struzen were great - couldn't they have used them? Instead we get a cheap and rushed DVD cover worthy of any old movie, not the Star Wars Trilogy - George Lucas should take a leaf out of Peter Jackson's DVD producing book (and maybe his CGI movie making book too). The lord of the rings extended edition DVDs are fantastic in every way - the movies, the menus, the extras, and the packaging.

So that's my grumbles out of the way
