"take a step back man. Calm down. I think you're getting a little too upset over this"

Yeah, I know. My baby's upcoming heart surgery is robbing me of sleep, but I just can't abide by such bad reasoning in any case. People pretending to know what mverta is going to do, despite what he says, is ridiculous.

Macrovision is technically incompatible with laserdisc. It can't happen. There's something wrong with your setup.

When I put my magical device (Sima Digital Copy Master) between the laserdisc player and DVD recorder, the picture straightens up, I take it out the pictures dims & brightens. nothing wrong with my setup, there is some kind of copy guard somewhere. Some of my laserdisc dont do this, but any of them that are Fox (Like Star Wars) do. I have VCRs hooked together and without the Sima device they do the same thing on most tapes. The older style of "Macrovision" was I think called "Copygaurd" and is on VHS tapes, they may also be on Laserdiscs.

I'm not sure what you are doing, but every source on the Internet specifically states that LD does not and cannot use Macrovision.

4.7) Can laserdiscs have Macrovision?
Apparently no. First of all, it is technically difficult, because the region used by Macrovision is also used to hold control data for the laserdisc players. Secondly, because of backward compatibility, the laserdisc specs cannot be easily changed. Thirdly, as long as the laserdisc market stays as a niche market, the distributors will not pressure the manufacturers to change the specs. And if they did, the sales would surely drop.

No copy protection - Macrovision, copyguard, or whatever you want to call it, was ever put in laserdisc.

there was a time when they played with the video levels so that when copying the video level would drop below the threshold that the copyiny device could handle. This gimmick was quite easy to see when the signal was run through a time base corrector with a video meter attachment. When we used to do corparate event & project them on a 20' screen for a meeting, it would drive the projectors crazy. It became standard practice to include a time base corrector with the rental of all non live video feeds at a cost $225 plus the cost of the projector rental $1200 per day. (As background, i worked in philadelphia in the 80's & 90's doing large indoor & outdoor events/concerts for crowds up to 70,000 people at a time) This gimmick was not used on all prerecorded video & seemed to have predated the more formal version that became macrovision. My current vcr proscan 84 has this circuitry included & allows me to copy from all video sources including the matrix DVD.

He says quite clearly he'll not distribute or sell the discs....eh, but for a restoration as meticulous and as gorgeous as this one looks, we can all hope they'll leak somewhere along the line, can't we

But if people keep saying 'nudge nudge wink wink' then he may feel like its not worth the effort or potential trouble he could land in, if no matter what he says about never releasing them, that people make out like he will.

Hmm, that is hardly even a sentence ... I must get some sleep.

I haven't checked this site in a bit, so I didn't notice this thread until now...

Couple of things:

1) About "legal vs. illegal": spirit of the law vs. letter of the law. It's illegal to take the tags off your bed mattress. That's letter of the law. No one's been arrested for it. That's sprit of the law. Posting screencaps, as I do on my site, is illegal (letter of the law) and is nonetheless permitted on thousands of sites across the internet by Lucasfilm (spirit of the law). As for the "backup" legality, etc., I'm not eager to spout more ignorant ramblings on the topic, so I'll leave that to a lawyer if the occaision arises.

2) Calling me a rambling ignoramus is a personal insult.

3) Based on the thousands of emails I've gotten since opening the site, it appears starwarslegacy.com is inspiring discussion, passion, and reverence for the OT. Just as this site does. That's reason enough to document the effort, irrespective of any distribution.

4) Lucasfilm is watching the site, too. You're just going to have to trust me on this.

5) This thread has quickly devolved into a discussion of topics peripheral to the restoration itself, and that's fine, but there isn't really any reason for me to follow it. I have expressed my hesitance to hijack any of Jay's resources, but I'll talk to him about starting a new thread.

I think the work your putting into this is amazing, your screen caps look outstanding. I agree that the inspiration that the site cause is reason enough to document it, but I think also the indepth look at a restoration project like this will provide insight to so many people and be a useful resource for so many other projects by so many other people that your taking the time to document it is great.

and also not to nit pick or anything but in reference to the first point you made.

the consumer is allowed to remove the tag from your matress as the tag actually starts: "UNDER PENALTY OF LAW THIS TAG SHALL NOT BE REMOVED EXCEPT BY THE CONSUMER"

as found here

also found this and i know its off topic but thought it was interesting:

"Back in the 1900s, mattresses often contained a host of vermin and disease-carrying materials. To protect consumers, the government required dealers to post tags on their mattresses listing the contents. Later, the Feds added a warning to the content tag with the ominous message, "Do not remove under penalty of law," in big, black letters."
