What exactly is the deal ith this version of ep 4? Can we geta list of changes/reworks?
…and a strange, yet good experience it is too - seeing the opening crawl come up like that.
For me the rawer sound effects in many of the blaster and fighting scenes give it a more intense feel.
(unless it’s the tv on way out again!)

‘How do I do this?’ on the OriginalTrilogy.com - includes info on how to ask for a fan project and how to search for projects and threads on OT•com.
A Project Index for Star Wars Preservations (Harmy’s Despecialized & 4K77/80/83 etc) : A Project Index for Star Wars Fan Edits (adywan & Hal 9000 etc)

“My skill are no longer as Mad as the once were” RiK
“My skill are no longer as Mad as the once were” RiK
(continued from Rikter’s post above)…
Some Threepio dialogue uses different takes. The additional lines (“The tractor beam is coupled to the main reactor in seven locations. A power loss at one of the terminals will allow the ship to leave…”) are missing from the laserdisc version.
The echo in the core shaft (“I think we took a wrong turn…”) is present in both versions. However, the echo is more pronounced in the laserdisc version–probably because the video is missing the surround channels.
The laserdisc is missing the now-famous “Close the blast doors!” line.
Intership voices during the final battle are not synthesized.
During the final battle, “countdown” voices on the Death Star and at the Massassi base on Yavin IV are completely different.
Luke’s line on the laserdisc, “Blast it, Biggs. Where are you?” is different on the pre-ANH video: “Blast it, Wedge. Where are you?” (from the collection of Peter Poulakakos).
Rik - Cheers for the preANH info too, mate.

Bit of a bump, this - it’s only getting on for 12 years…
I found a dvd copy of this MagnoliaFan version of ‘a Pre-ANH’ Star Wars amongst some stuff previously thought lost in a house move a while back. There may be more info on this in this thread here - but am not 100% sure - http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/id/801/page/1
If anyone wants a 1.9gb .mp4 copy from a googledrive you can PM me for a shared link. (You’ll have to own a copy of Star Wars on vhs, betamax, philips2000, laserdisc, dvd, vcd, cd, film, or whatever format was going back then! - as per site / fanedit rules 😉)
Got to be honest - the picture and sound quality is very raw - in fact the whole film comes across that way - but still enjoyed watching it! MagnoliaFan did a top job back in the day…

What exactly is this? An early reconstruction of the '77 crawl and audio?
What exactly is this? An early reconstruction of the '77 crawl and audio?
As far as I can remember/tell it’s NOT a reconstruction - but more a merging of the content from a VHS bootleg handcam recording from a time before ‘A New Hope’ or ‘Episode 4’ was added to Star Wars - edited together with a laserdisc version of the film (for quality) and put onto dvd by MagnoliaFan.
(back then we were all watchers of the various laserdisc versions from PAL/NTSC/Jap regions, and varying quality of laserdisc players being put onto dvds - by the likes of Dr Gonzo, TR47, Cowclops, Isomix, Moth3r, Editdroid, Editous, Citizen, Grinder etc).
Hopefully someone else remembers better than I do - though it may be worth contacting MagnoliaFan himself to see if he can remember! 😃
.
actually (from 7-Jul-2004 - http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Star-Wars-The-Edits-and-DVDr-releases-thread/id/801/page/3)…
The audio mix comes straight from the bootleg vhs.
The video has been replaced shot for shot with the lbx laserdisc and the alternate crawl was recreated in After Effects. Also Greedo’s subtitles were recreated as a subtitle track. It’s similar to how the dvd remastered Phantom Re-Edit was done. For that, the audio was from vhs, the video was a dvd rip, and the subtitles were transcribed as a seperate sub track.
In that case, though, two shots had to be replaced, as no dvd source existed for them, but a before and after vhs to dvd comparison was left to show how minimal the changes were.

Found these dvd covers by Rikter from his old - and still great - dvd cover collection from around 2004/5?..
and
and some disc art (from the Rikter 2004-ish dvd cover disc) too…
