It wasn't just bad marketing Bossk. Sony did with BETA what Apple has done with its computers (up until a few years ago).
They wouldn't licence the design.
Then, a competitor (I don't recall who made the first VHS decks) came around, and outsold them. Sony, rather than letting it continue, dumped BETA.
We've had at least 5 BETA decks that I can think of. 3-4 Sony, 1 Toshiba. Until we got our first VHS, we had 2 BETAs hooked into the TV at all times.

But, back on topic again, my family has:
2 copies of the OT movies on BETA (some older taped-off-TV ones, plus some backups of the Faces edition)
(Although I don't remember ever seeing it, my parents told me they used to have a bootleg of ANH, but the quality was so bad, they taped over it.)
Faces Edition on VHS, non-widescreen
Special Edition on VHS, widescreen*
TPM VHS, widescreen, special box set*
TPM DVD*
AOTC DVD*

Yep, their tagline is JVC the Inventor of VHS. They haven't had that kind of glory since, so that's why they're fighting over the next HD disc format.
The original Star Wars trilogy: Our cultural history deserves to be preserved and should be available to the public like all great works of art!

Anyone have any info (prices, availabilty, brands, reliabilty and compatibilty etc) on the DVD-9 and even DVD-18 discs?

Are they only available in the '-r' format?

Also, are the dual layer writers easily available and about how much are they going for (£ or $)?

My first Star Wars on video came on BETA and was recorded off of an HBO presentation of the film in, I think, 1980. May have been the first cable broadcast of the film, not sure.

Then I bought the ESB and ROTJ from CBS-FOX VHS in the mid-'80's. Then came the '90's P&S, the '95 THX set, and then the '97 SEs.

I also have the '92 Definitive LD Boxed Collection.

I currently only have the 1992 PS set. I also taped ESB and ROTJ in widescreen off the Sci Fi channel. Mr. Coffee, I sypathize with you. I've long had a problem with digital things that I've only recently gotten over. Basically one to many asses rubbing the format into my face, coupled with having no problem with video outside of lack of widescreen. Also, tapes just survive better in my hand than easily-scratchable discs. I hated being forced into the formats, but widescreen and anime has made it a moot point.

As for preserving the SE, I've never liked it since ROTJ was in theatres. However, since the whole point of this site is preserving the version we love most, it seems natural to preserve the SE for those who, for some reason or another, prefer it.

I understand how you feel my Dad and Brother both have moved into the High Definition format including the D-VHS format - BTW he has captured my LD's with his JVC S-VHS Recorder DH30000 - THE D-VHS versions look almost like the actual laserdisc - better then either set (IF you want it to look just like the LD) as far as overall quality - BUT you need a D-VHS to play them and the blank tapes cost $20 EACH

SO yes a VHS (well a Digital-VHS ) can really look better than an CAPTURED, FILTER and ENCODED DVDr version
