Knights of the Old Republic II - I want my thirty bucks back...

 (Edited)

I just played/finished Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords recently.

I think I just threw up in my mouth.

For anyone else who has waited this long to play this, please don’t. I know I’m passing this warning on a little late, but hopefully I can save at least one person from making a game buying mistake.

I’m going to go cry now. (Man… and the first KOTOR was so freakin’ good…)

For as much as some people claim to hate what Star Wars has become, they sure seem incapable of shutting up about it.

I LOVED Kotor II... then I got to the end, if you can call it that. How can they have ended it like that?

Your reaction is not unwarranted. This game has become quite the controversy in SW gaming circles. It turns out that game is NOT completely finished. It was rushed by LucasArts for a Xmas release last year. Bioware had to release the game with all kinds of bugs and other gameplay problems. But, more importantly, the game was never fully completed. Certain quests weren't finished being developed. I hear there are doors that don't go anyplace....that's the stuff that didn't get finished. To make matters worse, if you use explorer on the CD itself, you can find the unfinished content on the disk, but since the game wasn't finished being written, this stuff isn't in the game, yet they included it on the CD.

I have KOTOR and haven't played it yet. I have heard it rocks the house, but this sequel is inexcusable. It is further proof that money is all that matters to the Lucas companies. When I first heard this, I immediately backed off any SW related games. After what happened to Galaxies last month, I WILL NOT buy any more SW games, period. There is no consideration for the consumer and they are just looking to make a quick buck with the SW name. Quality control is a joke with SW now.

I have Knights of the Old Republic but I can't get it to work on my PC for some horrible reason. The screen is slow and then freezes. Like it doesn't have enough memory, but my laptop is pretty high end. I don't know what it's problem is. And they wouldn't let me return it. Basterds.

Now, on a personal rant/cry of sorrow I still wish that I could play my Rebel Assault II game. PC gaming has come so far since it game out 10 years ago that it is impossible for me to play it now. It's DOS based and my laptop is just too damn good.
Man...*sigh* it was mostly live action/interactive movie, and it had limited game play (it was mostly a shoot-em' up game). I'm not a gamer (I own 3 games to my name - RA: II, the Sims, and my X-Files game) so playing this game was heaven. All I had to do was interact and the story unfolded before me.
God...these pictures really take me back. I wanna play my old game so bad it hurts. They don't make interactive games like this anymore.

I wish LucasArts would release it again as some sort of "classic game play" like Nintendo did a few years ago with all the old NES games from the 80's.

You could always try to run it in Compatibility mode for Windows 95. that's how I got "Dark Forces" to work a couple of days ago. Just install it, then right-click the executable and select "Properties", then click the "Compatibility" tab and select "Run in compatibility mode for: Win 95". May not work, but it's worth a shot.

Another suggestion is that there's a DOS emulator out there (I think it's called DOSBox, but I'm not sure; I'll double-check when I'm at home).
That could take care of your problem as well.

Jenny....I feel your pain!!!! I love playing Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, Mysteries Of The Sith, X-Wing, Tie Fighter, etc. Problem is they just don't play well or at all on high end systems.

I have 2000, but am going up to XP soon, so we will see about getting them to run. My recommendation is to try DOSBox. It's a bit of a pain to get going, but it does play many old DOS games quite well.

I too would like to see these games made fully playable on current PC systems. Also would like the original Wolfenstein and the DOOMs. They have done it with the DOOMs, but there's no mouse support for them. Idiots.....how can you play a FPS without a mouse?!?!!?

SW games really have gone downhill lately (I use lately to mean the past few years). Sure, there have been a few gems, (KotOR, Battlefront, Jedi Knight II), but for the most part, well, they've been realy crappy. I never bought KotOR II, more because I hadn't finished the first one yet, but having heard about it now, I don't think I will.

I don't know if anyone here bought Republic Commando last year. If you haven't, don't. I thought that game was going to be the shit, serious. It sounded like a Rainbow Six a la SW. Instead, it was all simple point and click scenarios, with little icons popping up saying "you can snipe from here" and "put a bomb here" and that. The team was, apparantly, four specialists, but the same task could be done at the same speed by any memeber of the team. There was so much more that could have been done to that game to make it a little more than spray and pray.

The only SW game I play right now is BF2. It was a good sequel. Maybe not the best game out there, not even the best of its genre, but fun nonetheless, and a great story in the campaign.

Desperate for entertainment I popped in my brothers N64 game "Rogue Squadron" and well, it sucks. I'm not really that into games, but it's totally boring. Give me SNES Star Wars, ESB, and ROTJ. Which, my brother also owns thankfully.

I'm not that into the games, either. Only a few were great, like SOTE, KOTOR, the Dark Forces series.

I loved the original Rogue Squadron, actually, and I kept on meaning to continue with the GameCube versions, but I still never have.

Hey tape, did you notice that your post count is exactly 1138? That's funny.

Ooh, I didn't notice that. Thanks for pointing it out. Heh, and that's the first time anyone's referred to me as "tape". Most people here call me Gaffer. Not complaining, it's just an interesting change of pace.

Of course, now that I've posted again, I won't be 1138 anymore. Oh, well. We all have to move on sometime.

I started playing FPSs around 1994 with Wolfenstein 3D....I always had a mouse and was able to play that way, so I guess I was fortunate. I tried to play with a keyboard and just couldn't do it.

Now here's an interesting question....anyone here play SW games online with other players.....like Jedi Outcast or Jedi Academy or any others? Is it me or is there an incredible amount of assholes who play SW games online?

I am soooo glad I read this thread before shelling out my money for this game. I really liked the first one. Maybe I should get Battlefront II instead. Are there any plans for a Republic Commando II? I haven't finished it yet, but I am really enjoying it.

WARNING!! MILD SPOILERS FOR BOTH KOTOR AND KOTOR II CONTAINED WITHIN!!

My initial problem with the game (KOTOR II) was that I really didn't give a crap about any of the characters.

I know, I know... it's a video game and all... but in the original, at least the characters were SOMEWHAT sympathetic. Carth was a whiney bitch, sure, but he was a whiney bitch because his former mentor blew up his entire planet and killed his family. Canderous was a murderous warmongering psychopath, but he still had a sense of honor and willingly grouped up with the guy who had formerly whipped the snot out of his entire order because he respected the man. Hell, even Jolee was the falen Jedi type who at least wanted to set things right. Yeah... I played and completed this game almost 2 years ago now and I still remember these details because that game drew you in. When I found out that I was Revan, my jaw literally dropped and chills went up my spine. That was some damn fine game design.

But KOTOR II... *sigh*... where do I start? There didn't seem to be any freakin' reason for anyone to be there. Atton was... was... what was he? Wasn't there some hinting that he was a real bad dude at some point? The handmadein was along for what reason? Sometimes it seemed like she was sent along to keep tabs on the Exile, and other times it seemed like she was a runaway. And Atris... don't even get me started. Her motivations, background, and general overall purpose in the game was so convoluted and, at best, contrived, that I at no point had a real handle as to why she was even in the game. Then there's the Miriluka chick who's involvment was so nonsensical that I never even bothered to learn her name.

I know about the Lucasarts fiasco, with them forcing Obsidian to release the game early. And for that I sincerely pray that the fan backlash over this game doesn't unjustly effect Obsidian, because you can almost see the ghost of a good game trying deperatly to force it's way through the cracks in a horribly botched rush job.

In response to Marvolo's question about the ending... there was no ending. That's how it ends. Seriously... you beat the last "boss" and the credits roll. No resolution, no "where are they now", no hint to a possible sequel... nothing. It would be like watching the Return of the Jedi and right after Vader chucks the Emperor down the shaft, the credits roll. Does Vader reconcile with Luke? Does the rest of the Empire fall at the pudgy hands of the Ewok force on the planet below? Who the hell cares! The Emperor is dead! Roll credits!

And to 20th Cent's comment about Battlefront II... you might want to do some serious research on that one before you shell out the fifty bucks for it. I can't speak from first hand experience, so take everything I say with a grain of salt, but all signs point to it being a pretty shoddy effort. And all of my gaming buddies in my old WoW guild pretty much shot down any chance of me spending the money when I asked them about their personal experiences as well. If I were you, I'd pick up a copy of Unreal Tournament 2004 and look for a Star Wars mod. (UT2004 kicks some serious ass by the way... it's easy to see why they haven't made a newer version yet since this one is so close to perfection... again, this is just one man's opinion.

Mark, I enjoy Battlefront II, but it really isn't all that special. I got it as a gift, and I play it, but Rebel Rouser is right when he says it doesn't hold a candle to Unreal Tournament. The single player campaign is fun the first time, but online, well, there are much better games.

Even the Galactic Conquest SW mod for BF 1942 kicks BF I and II's ass, I highly suggest picking up Battlefield 1942 and checking out the mods for it, there are tons and tons with great variety(I mean, there is a Pirate mod for goodness sakes).
