Considering the state of the franchise, that’s rather fitting, no?

Just an alternative outlook…

The Mandalorian seems to be an intriguing and eagerly anticipated show airing soon - with both a new Cassian spy series & Obi-Wan mini-series on the horizon, with apparently some others in the pipelines (likely for Disney+).

The Main Saga coming to an end with IX (which will seemingly please some people) - and yet also plans for future Star Wars films outside of the events/timeline of the Main Saga so far.

Plus a new SW film by Kevin Feige to come - who seems to quite popular and successful with his efforts with the Marvel franchise…

A new season of The Clone Wars too.

Some decent comics out already - and more to come, more novels - as ever, and even some new promising looking games.

A fair bit of content for the kids of late - and the new theme-parks too; for those that like / can afford that sort of thing.

And if you don’t like any of that… you still have whatever you liked about Star Wars in the first place (though an official UHD OOT release would be most welcome 😉)

Obviously YMMV…

An evil presence inhabiting the rotten bodies of our old friends? XD

Seems all the movies are 4k HDR on Disney Plus.

In case anyone was curious, the Clone Wars movie is on there (listed under “specials,” separately from the rest of TCW), and it does not have the Warner Bros. logo at the start.

The OT and PT all have the Fox logos and fanfare. TFA and Rogue One still don’t.

Ash, would it be possible for you to post screenshots of the new versions? I think Disney+ has a browser version so you ought to be able to just print screen from that. I’m in the UK and I’m really eager to see the new colour grading but Disney+ isn’t available here. Thank you.

Not sure if this has already been discussed elsewhere, but the first six movies open with the '94 version of the 20th Century Fox title and the 2015 version of the Lucasfilm logo, but otherwise seem identical to the 2011 release.

EDIT: ChainsawAsh beat me to it.

Seems weird that they’d use the modern LFL logo but leave in the Fox logo.

Very curious to see what the movies look like.

Reportedly not identical. People are saying it’s a whole new color grade or transfer, and so far, Star Wars/New Hope has at least one new change.

I’ll depend on one of you to judge the color changes. I… I guess I’ll watch them all the way through to make sure there’s not anything else.

Just saw this screengrab of the 4k version. Bad news. It looks the same colour grading as the 2004/2011 versions. Vaders green lights are Blue in those versions yet fine in the 97 version. If they do have the exact same grading problems that have only ever been present in the versions taken from the 2k master done for the DVD’s/ Blu-rays then these aren’t new transfers, just upscales

ROTJ is the one that we’ll be able to tell for sure if they are new transfers or just upscales. If that film still has the “out of focus” scanning problems as they approach Endor, right up to the speeder bike chance, then they are the same 2004 masters

I read a comment elsewhere that that scene has been fixed.

If not a new transfer, the grading has at least been radically altered from the DVD and BluRay. Han’s hair isn’t purple and the desert in ANH feels less saturated, the Death Star explosion is much more orangish, etc. Compared to the BluRay, this version looks more appealing.

That’s all the recon I can provide right now; the baby is fed and I’m going back to bed.

My stance on revising fan edits.

It’s getting downright laughable how many changes the Han shooting Greedo scene has had. You couldn’t ask for a more straightforward, universally understandable, basic character building scene. Now it’s a pure mess.

At this point, I’d bet $20 when they finally release on 4K discs, it will be changed again. Maybe some slow motion?

I’m watching A New Hope right now. It is NOT the previous transfer. It suffers from some of the same issues but a number of key scenes have been corrected. Just the highlights so far (I’m skipping around to the scenes I know are bad) are the external explosion on the blockade runner is no longer pink, C-3PO is actually gold in every shot as he and R2 walk down the corridor in the blockade runner, the exploding door in the blockade runner is no longer pink, as C-3PO walks through the desert alone, he no longer has green sand behind him and his color is consistent (as it was in all the pre-DVD releases) in the whole scene (that was one of the hardest for me to clean up), when R2 is shot, the smoke around the gun is no longer pink, the sky in the stormtrooper/dewback scene is not longer intense and matches the other shots of Tatooine, The worst single shot of the film (where the sandcrawler door is open and you see R5-D4) now has natural colors rather than the intense reds and greens, there are no purple/pink tones to the droid sale, the yellow flowers are back during the dinner scene, the second sun is no longer intense neon orange, the phantom Luke is gone just before Owen goes looking for Luke and asks Beru, the stupid rocks are still in front of R2, the scene with Ben in the canyon actually has color and depth, the Han Greedo shoothout has been edited again, all the blaster flashes in the blockade runner, the detention cell and the death star escape are no longer pink but back to the more subtile peachy color of the GOUT, Luke and Ben’s sabers are now blue in every shot (no green or purple) and Vader’s is a consistent red (not straying to orange), the Millenium Falcon’s engines glow blue again, the opening scene of reel 6 is no longer overly neon red, the orange flightsuits in the inserted Biggs scene now match the surrounding scenes, the rebel screen table showing the approaching deathstar is no longer the wrong color, the rebel pilots cockpit shots looks more like the GOUT again (not so much variation in colors), the explosions look right again, the death star screen showing the progress toward Yavin is no longer blue, the proton torpedos are no longer pink, Luke’s yellow jacket is more consistent, and the final shot before the iris out is no longer the wrong colors.

This is either a very cleaned up version or it is a completely new scan. My guess is the latter. The colors still lean red, but not as bad and the movie is very dark. That could just be the phone I am watching it on, but I don’t think so. I think this takes the film from an unwatchable mess to watchable but no perfect. The new Greedo bit is annoying and unneeded, but then that is what a lot of the changes have been like. I’m curious if the new disc is this version or just the old one again. This would make me buy the new discs if this is the version on there.

The Force Awakens does not have burned in subtitles for the alien languages.

OK, but… why Maclunkey? Of all the changes they could have made, why that one in particular? Who was the executive that thought: “This scene is iconic, but you know what it’s missing? Greedo saying a gibberish word right before he shoots. Yeah, it’ll be like how in a Western they say Draw right before they shoot, but made more Star Warsy.”

If you believe Pablo Hidalgo, that executive was George Lucas back in 2012.

That makes sense. It’s a helluva tone deaf change, but that’s entirely within Lucas’s wheelhouse to have done.
