Despecialized edition blu ray PlayStation 3 playback problems.

In late 2017 I purchased the despecialized trilogy on blu ray and played it successfully several times on my PlayStation 3. However, last summer, I finally had to replace the laser reader on my PlayStation 3 as it began struggling to play any blu rays after 8 years of use. After this replacement, however, I haven’t been able to play the despecialized trilogy at all while playing any other blu rays I own successfully; when inserting a disc from the despecialized trilogy into my PlayStation 3 it repeats the sound of a disc being loaded but doesn’t do anything else, nor does it show the disc being inside at all. I tried erasing the bd data utility on the PlayStation 3 to correct the issue, but without any results. As a new member of this site I’m not sure if this is the right place to bring up this issue but I hope I can find a (preferrably simple and cost effective) solution to this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome BlueManta44,

You purchased the Depsecialized Editions? - I hope you didn’t pay more than for the cost of blank discs and p&p…

Though if you did… this video from Harmy himself may be worth a watch - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrwKZHv4OS0 (and reading the About and Help sections linked at the top of the site may help you get a feel for the place) 😃

Re your issues with the PS3 not playing the Despecialized discs - have you tried playing the discs in another PS3 (friend, family, neighbour’s etc) to see if they play in there? Does your Despecialized discs work in other bly ray players?

It does sound like there may be an issue with the discs themselves.

Hi oojason,
Thanks for getting back to me. I guess I made the wrong entry into this community by purchasing the trilogy (I am a bit confused since the trilogy I bought officially features the Harmy Film logo on it) and thereby causing the death of a kitten; this was not my intent. I recently tried these discs on a friend’s xbox one and they worked perfectly so I have the feeling unfortunately that the new laser reader on my ps3 (which is currently my only blu ray player) is the culprit; as said before I was able to watch them fine on my ps3 before the laser replacement (although it started having problems playing them or any other blu rays shortly before I had the replacement made). In the meantime I can look into downloading the trilogy the intended way but, although, I kinda know my way around my computer I am definitely no expert.
Thanks again,
BlueManta44

Sounds like the blank discs the bootleggers used to burn the Despecialized copies they sold you are lower quality and are starting to go bad. You’ll probably start to have issues with them in more and more players as time goes on.
