Can you get divorced in Ireland yet?

For the last 23 years anyone has been able to get a divorce in Ireland.

Wow 23 years, they’re really on the leading edge of progressive culture! :p

In general they have come a long way in a short amount of time, including the removal of power that religion infringed upon everyday life there.

Maybe it could go in the Politics thread - though from a UK/Irish perspective I’d say this is more news than politics.

I think my point is that it will become a political discussion here on this forum, regardless of UK/Irish perspective.

I’ll leave it here, as it is more current affairs/news than politics - though feel free to post the links in the politics thread to kickstart a conversation on it there.

Why don’t you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don’t you dig how beautiful it is out here? And say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

I think we’d see a similar result in the US if we held a referendum. The Irish restrictions to be implemented appear a bit more restrictive than the laws in the UK, but altogether there are more reasonable laws on abortion in Europe than the US.

Federalism is a big part of why the US has such a problem with civil liberties. A lot of states are completely backwards on things like gay rights, abortion, public school funding, separation of church and state etc. etc. even though the country as a whole is more progressive than that, but since each state has two senators, the people in Mississippi and Wyoming have equal senatorial representation to California and New York and states like that. Senate and electoral college aside, the voters in those states still elect governors and legislators that either have a poor track record on or are outright opposed to most civil liberties and constitutional rights, making states like Mississippi far worse places to live than states with populations that are overall more reasonable.

Federalism gets in the way of good things as well as bad things.

As of right now it essentially allows for some states to be far better than others, which is unfortunate for the people living in the worst states. I think it’s important for states to have their own governments run by people that actually know what life is like in those states, but certain things (e.g. gay rights, abortion, marijuana) need to be legalized everywhere and all Americans’ rights to those things need to be uniformly protected. Unfortunately, the states rights platform is basically just an anti-civil liberties platform.

Totally disagree but this isn’t the debate thread.

‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ actress Kelly Marie Tran deleted all her Instagram posts after months of harassment

Actress Kelly Marie Tran, who played Rose Tico in last year’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” has deleted all her Instagram posts after months of sexist and racist harassment online. She has not publicly commented on her reason for wiping her page.

As of Tuesday, Tran’s Instagram page was still visible, with the bio line “Afraid, but doing it anyway,” but there were no posts. Popular but unofficial “Star Wars” Twitter page “Star Wars Facts” tweeted Monday night “Kelly Marie Tran has deleted all the posts off her Instagram due to months of harassment she has received for her character Rose.” A request for comment from Tran’s representative was not immediately returned.

Tran faced racism and sexism online surrounding her casting in “The Last Jedi.” For instance, In December, someone edited the Rose Tico Wookieepedia page so that her name was “Ching Chong Wing Tong” and her home was “Ching Chong China.”

Tran wouldn’t be the first “Star Wars” actress to distance herself from Instagram because of harassment. Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey in the new trilogy, deleted her account in 2016 after facing criticism for her appearance and her stance on gun control.

In an interview with Glamour in December, Ridley said: “I posted a thing about gun regulations, because I was at an event in tribute to the Orlando shooting at Pulse. People weren’t nice about how I looked. And I was like, ‘I’m out.’ Simple as that. That is not what I signed up for.”

The “Star Wars” fandom has had a toxic and sexist underbelly that’s reared its head many times since Disney took over.

On Tuesday, the official “Star Wars” Twitter tweeted a “Happy Birthday” wish to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and some fans were quick to attack her in replies.

I’m in an affected area, so I’m not sure whether to put this here or in the Bitching Thread.

Am surprised there isn’t a ‘tech news’ type thread on here.

Unless you are trying to achieve escape velocity, or you are a telescope, I don’t see why that would matter.

I’m a telescope trying to achieve escape velocity.

But everyone knows that cell service comes from space. Just like God comes from space. Which is why all churches are in the mountains. How do you not know this?

I’ll say. Such a shoddy piece of “art” certainly calls into question the existence of Deity.

Religious fundamentalism and irreligious fundamentalism are two sides of the same worthless coin.
